Alabama Senate Race: Can Moore Lose?

This is quite a story: Dec. 12th’s Alabama Senate race between Roy Moore, Republican, and Doug Jones, Democrat. Jones probably doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in Alabama but the race became somewhat more interesting with today’s allegations (reported in the Washington Post) by four women that Moore made sexual advances to them when they were teenagers. One of them was 14. Moore was 32 and an Assistant District Attorney. In this current race, Moore was pushed forward and supported by Steve Bannon.

Now, here’s another part of the story. Moore’s Democratic Party opponent also has some level of fame. He served as a United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama, appointed by President Bill Clinton, and rose to prominence for prosecuting the remaining two Ku Klux Klan perpetrators of the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing which killed four African-American girls. You might remember that story.

Here’s what’s really galling about this story. In today’s bizarro world of American politics where the president is a confessed sexual predator and this senate race is between a pedophile and someone who convicted racist killers of four black girls, the pedophile has a better chance of being elected.

When Republican voters were interviewed about whether this story would make any difference to their vote, they said “absolutely not”. After yesterday’s stunning wins by Democrats in Virginia and elsewhere, it is just a little depressing to realize that for large swaths of the American public it’s not about character or political platform, it’s about party. And that’s just as tribal as Afghanistan or Syria or Congo - or anywhere else you care to mention.

And the beat goes on.

'We are toast!' Sen. Jeff Flake is caught on hot mic roasting Trump and Roy Moore to Republican mayor who labels the president an 'idiot'

 • Flake said the GOP was 'toast' if it becomes 'the party of Roy Moore and Donald Trump'
 • He was talking to his long-term friend John Giles, the mayor of Mesa, at the time
 • Giles, who is also a Republican, replied by appearing to call Trump an 'idiot'
 • He appeared to urge Flake to run for president as they spoke in private
 • They were at a tax reform event on Friday night and appeared to forget about their microphones
 • Moore has been accused of sexual misconduct by nine different women
 • Flake is a vocal and reliable Trump critic and announced last month that he would not seek reelection because of the state of the party

Pastor Franklin Raddish of the Capitol Hill Independent Baptist Ministries, a nationwide church, told AL.com from his South Carolina home that the spate of accusations against men in politics, Hollywood and elsewhere was a "war on men."

"More women are sexual predators than men," said Raddish. "Women are chasing young boys up and down the road, but we don't hear about that because it's not PC."

What is with these statutes of limitation Does this include murder? There are reasons why women don’t come forward until much later on in life as is presently happening with Roy Moore and many others Those laws need to be changed And the Democrats need to clean up their act. Hillary Clinton needs to be quiet about this issue as she became part of the problem defending her husband’s transgressions, and unfortunately Al Franken needs to resign. As Nate Silver said the Democrats will not lose the seat, but they need to both be obviously clean on this issue, but also give the appearance of being clean as well.

I believe murder is one of the only crimes exempt from the statute of limitations, in most jurisdictions. Others are the big-ticket crimes like treason and espionage. Basically, if you could get the death penalty for it in America, don't count on it being dropped after a few decades.

The Moore Allegations Haven’t Changed How People See Trump

Does Roy Moore still have a chance in the Alabama Senate race? Some recent polls show him flagging, but an average shows the race to be tight. Watch the video above for more on what might happen in Alabama, and for whether any of it is changing how Americans think of President Trump.

Maybe the people in the South aren't anywhere near racist as we might think they are.

Maybe the problem is just that the people who are rich and powerful and who control society there are the racist ones.

Why is it so hard for white Alabamans(not that white Americans in other parts of parts of the US)to let go of this obsession with hanging on to a bitter, ugly past-a past they have to realize by now really didn't have much in it that's worth preserving?  Why can't they just freaking move on already?

Mythmaking is a very powerful tool. The Lost Cause myth (along with most of the Confederate war memorial statues) really sprung up around the time desegregation began in earnest. It's why you can see Confederate flags in West Virginia, a state that would not exist if it hadn't rebelled against the Confederacy to rejoin the Union. Racism is more palatable to most people when you can wrap it in a flag and tell yourself some stories about the people who died long ago to give you the right to be racist.

Canada's not immune from mythmaking either, and I'm not just talking about Gavin McInnes. This year I watched the CBC commemorate Vimy Ridge, a battle where 80% of "Canadian Corps" combatants were born in the United Kingdom, fought in one of the most pointless and destructive wars humanity's ever engaged in, and died in order to become symbols of Canadian national unity in the late 1960s when Lester Pearson was searching for symbols. So it is with the Confederacy. Ages ago, our ancestors died to keep the Yankees from making us treat black people as anything other than farm equipment, and if we can construct a proud heritage around that, we can justify whatever we want in its name.

Here's a slightly different take on Roy Moore

I first encountered Roy Moore in 2002 in a Montgomery, Ala., courtroom, where I was an expert witness on the separation of church and state in what came to be known as the Alabama Ten Commandments case. Moore, then the state’s chief justice, was the defendant.

...He was silent that day in the courtroom, but he had already made a great deal of noise about the United States being a Christian nation. One of his arguments was that the founders were aware of no religion other than Christianity, and therefore, the First Amendment gave only Christians the right to free exercise.

That statement, of course, was demonstrably, ridiculously false. But that’s Roy Moore. The Republican Senate nominee has fashioned an entire career out of subterfuge and self-misrepresentation — as a constitutional authority, as a Baptist and as a spokesman for evangelical values.

An interesting article, and one that focuses on Moore's (deliberate) misunderstanding of the constitution of the USA.

Senate candidate Roy Moore's accuser: I was a 14-year-old child

A woman who says Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore abused her when she was a 14-year-old girl has described the alleged encounter.

Leigh Corfman told NBC News that Mr Moore, then a 32-year-old prosecutor, "seduced" her at his house in 1979.

Several Alabama newspapers have endorsed Mr Moore's Democratic opponent, a remarkable step in such a staunchly Republican state.

Mr Moore, who denies the allegation, is currently lagging in opinion polls.

Most of the Republican establishment has lined up against the 70-year-old former Alabama supreme court judge and firebrand Christian conservative, whom they did not want elected in the first place.

Things Republican Roy Moore believes

Ms Corfman originally told the Washington Post how she was approached by Mr Moore outside a courthouse in Etowah County in 1979.

She said she had been sitting with her mother on a bench awaiting a child custody hearing in her parents' divorce case.

Her mother, the newspaper reported, was delighted when the assistant district attorney offered to sit with her daughter outside to spare her having to listen to the court proceedings.

In the coming days, Mr Moore allegedly picked up Ms Corfman around the corner from her home, and drove her to his house in the woods where he sexually assaulted her, the newspaper claims.
