Trudeau and Morneau: The pursed lip boys
voice of the damned

Cullen makes a very profound point as too many Canadians are shaking our heads and asking,”Who did we send to office?”

I really don't get the impression that there are a lot of Canadians expressing serious disillusionment with the Liberals. Certainly not among the people who voted Liberal in 2015.

I do hear it among people I know who voted Liberal in the last election. Most of them still say they would vote Liberal now. In many cases they feel disapointment but so far do not feel that any of the other options are better.

That said, the polls suggest that many who joined the honeymoon to support them after the election have had a rethink and the Liberals are back close to their electoral numbers.

For the NDP they lost a lot following the election in the polls but many have returned and the NDP is just a little below where they were. Still it is hard to determine how that would fare in an eleciton since the Quebec numbers remain down. the NDP has some work to do.

The Liberals are in a downward trend in the polls from where they were having given up most of the honeymoon numbers. It is unclear now if the trend will continue, reverse or stabilize when it comes to preferences but this is not the same as the real feeling that people are seeing a difference between what they voted for and what they have. The key issue is that this is not translating yet into a perception that another party would be better. But this disapointment is the first stage and I think it is undeniable.

One reason for the reluctance is that many who have supported the Liebrals do not yet blame them much. Instead they are blaming uncertainty in the economy, threats from Trump and things they feel are beyond the control of the Liberals. They also blame expectations which have in many ways come back to earth.

Again -- this may gel into regret leading to a change in voting preference, a loss of enthusiasm which could mean a turnout problem for the Liberals, or it could lead to acceptance that this is all we can get and that we just expected to much.

The Liberals would be making a mistake if they think this is not a threat to them.

But you are correct, at this point it is not immediately clear if they will pay much if at all at the ballot box. Although, I think you should not take this as meaning there is no disapointment. People like me are not disapointed as I am not seeing anything I did not expect but then I did not support the Liberals. Friends who did are mentionning disapointment but not a change in their voting intentions so far.
