Could Canada double the USA medal count? It’s possible.

Mr. Magoo

Russian athlete in Pyeongchang suspected of doping violation

We'll need to see the conclusive evidence from that "B" sample before shaking our heads.

NorthReport

Norway almost tripling USA medal count.

Since that doping scandal in the World Chess Olympiads, nothing can surprise me any more!

Russian Curler Denies Meldonium Use At Olympics, Asks For Thorough Probe

https://sptnkne.ws/gMJb

"...The Russian Curling Federation will appeal to the IOC, the Organizing Committee of Pyeongchang-2018, and the World Curling Federation with a request for assistance in the investigation of the case of Aleksandr Krushelnitcki. Namely, with the request to provide videos from surveillance cameras in the Olympic village. Such a request will also be sent to the hotel in Japan where athletes lived during training before the trip to the Winter Olympics,' the FKR said in a statement.

'The Russian Federation created a special commission to investigate this case, which has prepared and sent a statement to the Investigative Committee of Russia about the possibility of unknown persons having added prohibited substances into the food of the athlete, as his 11 doping tests include 10 clean, and only the last with a positive result,' the statement adds..."

Who Is Burying The Olympic Movement and Why?

https://dissidentvoice.org/2018/02/who-is-burying-the-olympic-movement-a...

"...By the time the 2018 Winter Olympic Games opened in PyenongChang last week, the masterminds behind the so-called Russian doping scandal had finally lost their control of the narrative, causing irreparable damage to the Olympic movement and to sports in general...."

Fascinatingly, Krushelnitsky suspects another Russian of having "roofied" him.

Didn't Maria Sharapova take Meldonium for her "magnesium deficiency" -- not unlike taking Aspirin for your anemia?

It's not a magnesium supplement, it's a drug that increases blood flow and oxygen delivery to the body.

The Maria Sharapova Drug Story...

http://blogs.bmj.com/bjsm/2016/04/17/the-sharapova-drug-story-whats-the-...

"...First is the evidence that Mildranate (or Meldonium) is indicated for the conditions Maria was taking it for, apparently to 'combat a magnesium deficiency, heart problems and because of a family history of diabetes..."

Sharapova Returns - WADA Could Learn from Its Handling Of Meldonin Ban

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/olympics/2017/04/23/maria-sharapov...

"...After hundreds of positive tests in Olympic sports last year, Sharapova remains one of the relative few to be suspended for its use. 'The whole meldonium saga from beginning to end is very strange, and she's one of the few athletes who got a really significant sanction from it...said Paul Greene, a sports lawyer who handles anti-doping matters around the world...It was just a nightmare for all these international federations,' said Greene. 'I don't think WADA would sit there and say it was their proudest hour."

Buddy never managed to give an explanation for why Meldonium should be the pharmaceutical of choice for any of those.  You're welcome to take vitamin C supplements for your magnesium deficiency, too, and it won't hurt you, but there's no special reason to recommend it when the more obvious choice would be magnesium supplements.

That says nothing about why the use of a drug that increases blood flow and oxygen delivery to the body should or should not be a permissible performance enhancer.  It just notes that poor Sharapova got a ticket while someone else got a warning.

People can read the links and decide for themselves. For me the pieces upthread in #12 are of particular interest. Others may find them so as well.

Mr. Magoo

Honestly, NDPP, at this point Russia's best hope might just to be to say "We're addicted!  We're like a kleptomaniac, but of Olympic medals!  We thought we could stop any time we wanted to, but it just kept getting bigger and bigger and we need help!".

If the doper who turns out to have doped another doper is another Russian, would that be time for an intervention?

Also, is Meldonium just sold in vending machines in Russia?

Wow.

Another apparent Russian doper.

Sergeeva has denied taking the drug, with the Russian Bobsled Federation president Alexander Zubkov stating: “She confirms she took no such medication and the team confirms she was not issued any medication.”

Did she turn away from her drink at the bar for a just moment, and get "roofied" by a teammate, like that other fellow??

What's strange is that with such a massive doping program Russia is allowed anywhere near the Games.

Norway's performance is very impressive. Is this a historical best for them as it is for Canada?

NorthReport

Not only is it a historic best for Norway it is the record medal count for any country in the Winter Olympics ever

And here is the reason which is quite remarkable- hats off to Norway!

IOC Lifts Suspension On Russian Olympic Committee

So, pretty much like any other athletes, who (at worst) were part of a conspiracy involving their corrupt doctor who supplied their "juice".

Russia is still the only COUNTRY that I can recall having taken part in a doping scheme.  That's still different, if these two athletes acting "individually" is.
