It's not an either/or. No one would deny that data-processing agencies are involved in politics, and have been for a long time.
I worked for a market-research company decades ago, and we did surveys for political parties on a number of occassions. Some of them even had questions that would probably have caused quite a bit of controversy, had they leaked out, eg. "The ***** Party candidate in the Whatever-Wherever riding is a native Canadian. What do you think about this?"

I pretty much agree with this. When Wikileaks began, I thought it was a worthwhile enterprise. There are plenty of secrets that ought to be revealed for the common good. Sometimes, corporate media are reluctant to publish such secrets if they are embarrassing to the government of the day, or other powerful factions. For cases like the Iraq war documents leaked by Chelsea Manning, something like Wikileaks is a good idea, in my view. However, once Assange started using Wikileaks as a tool for his personal and political machinations, I lost respect for him and his organization.

Well, at least under US law, I think there would be a difference between "you" and "someone else" publishing the stuff. My understanding is that a media outlet can publish something that was obtained illegally, as long as they weren't the people who obtained it. In other words, the guy who took it could be in trouble, but not the newspaper.
That said, I suspect that if a newspaper was actually encouraging people to go around breaking into safes or taking classified stuff home from military bases, they could be charged with inciting the crime, or whatever the charge would be in that case. To the extent that there would be any valid charges against Assange, I assume they might turn on that distinction.
