Oh, and he breaks into their control room, and invites Ann Coulter to come visit.

Mr. Magoo

How many of our Asaange-defenders here would think that the Canadian government is obligated to keep THAT arrangement going? Not too many, I would think.

Would this somehow shame the Government of Canada?  Because I think some might support it solely for that.

This is just modern-day politics.  Ecuador must give Assange all he requires to oppose Empire, or else they're licking the boots of Empire.  That's all this is.

Assange Works For the People - Now We Need To Save Him  -  by Slovoj Zizek

https://on.rt.com/92ds

"...So let's move to the big question: Why now? I think one name explains it all: Cambridge Analytica - a name which stands for all Assange is about, for what he fights against. The disclosure of the link between the great private corporations and government agencies. Remember what a big topic and obsession the Russian meddling in the US election was? Now we know it was not Russia hackers (with Assange) who nudged the people towards Trump, but instead the West's own data-processing agencies which joined forces with political forces. But it means the big bad wolf who distorts our democracy is not in the Kremlin but walking around the West itself..."

6079_Smith_W

The same Zizek who said he would vote for Trump because it would be "it will be a kind of big awakening. New political processes will be set in motion"?

You actually take that fool seriously?

It's not an either/or. No one would deny that data-processing agencies are involved in politics, and have been for a long time.

I worked for a market-research company decades ago, and we did surveys for political parties on a number of occassions. Some of them even had questions that would probably have caused quite a bit of controversy, had they leaked out, eg. "The ***** Party candidate in the Whatever-Wherever riding is a native Canadian. What do you think about this?"

Some people might be trying to exaggerate the impact of possible Russian involvement(in order to absolve Hillary, or whatever), but for the most part, it's a big issue because of the possibility that laws may have been broken.

If the embassy just shuffled him to the sidewalk, would that constitute "ending his isolation"?

Mr. Magoo

I think the idea is that the populace of Ecuador comprises many more, and that their tax dollars should fund Assange's windmill tilting, if only because that would look like someone supports him.

Repeating your original supercilious comment suggests it is something you pretend to believe rather than just your usual groundless anti-Assange trolling.

What part of "no outside communication, or visitors, except for his lawyer" don't you understand?  Phone access is denied, let alone  a "data plan", (ie internet access).  Slipped to him by his Lawyer for his secret use under the noses of Embassy security with no consequences? Get real.

It's kind of difficult to understand this piling on with respect to Assange. When and how did he become the enemy to be mocked and minimized?

If he cannot receive visitors, can't use the internet and can't have a phone, maybe he should give the embassy one star on Yelp and take his business elsewhere.

Quote:

Well, the non-consensual sex thing couldn't have helped.

But to be fair, nobody's saying he's "the enemy", like all the bad things in the world are his fault.

But it kind of looks like most of the bad things in HIS world, are his fault.  Why did the embassy shut off his bits and bytes, for example?  Was he maybe an unappreciative guest?

Maybe it was when he decided he had ownership of the stuff others leaked to him and threatened to sue legitimate news media for covering it:

Or maybe it was when others on the left wrote him off:

Or when he started using the organization as a cash cow:

Or when he released information without concern that it put activists' lives at risk:

Or when he just handed the whole thing over to spies because of his personal grudges and desire for a get out of jail free card:

Or when he accused his alleged rape victims of political motivation:

Greenwald: The DNC's Lawsuit Against WikiLeaks Poses a Serious Threat to Press Freedom

https://t.co/E7sqJiHTf3

"The DNC's suit, as it pertains to WikiLeaks poses a grave threat to press freedom. What the DNC is counting on is that contempt for WikiLeaks and Julian Assange is so intense in official Washington [and dutifully mimicked by fake 'progressives'] that it will drown out the obvious menace this lawsuit poses to basic press freedoms..."

josh

Colluding with a government and/or political party as part of a conspiracy to defeat a political candidate would not be an exercise of freedom of the press.

6079_Smith_W

I'm sure Greenwald would have covered stories like this before; he must know that it is completely normal for everyone involved to be named, right down to the printer.

Except in this case there is plenty of reason why Wikileaks specifically should be named, from Roger Stone's comments about them, to Assange's own biased statements regarding the two candidates.

And he should also know that a lawsuit isn't by definition an assault on freedom of the press. Real media get sued all the time.

Mr. Magoo

Quote:

If Wikileaks really represents "freedom of the press", then privacy laws are in for a nasty fight with "freedom of the press".

Honestly reporting something you saw is definitely freedom of the press.

Honestly reporting something that you or someone else broke into an office and "found" in a locked case that you managed to open isn't freedom of the press, no matter how easy it was to open that locked case, or how curious the looky-loos are about what you found.

I don't, personally, believe that "the public interest" == "whatever the public is interested in".

I only use the term because a UK tribunal has for some reason recognized them as a media organization, even if it was in a secondary reference in a freedom of information case.

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2017/dec/14/wikileaks-recognised-as-a-...

It doesn't change the fact that Assange isn't a journalist, and his organization doesn't observe any of the standards that govern media. To the contrary, he has himself been very proprietary about information and tried to prevent real media from publishing it, and he has openly declared his political biases, and he has let his organization turn into a tool for national interests.

I pretty much agree with this. When Wikileaks began, I thought it was a worthwhile enterprise. There are plenty of secrets that ought to be revealed for the common good. Sometimes, corporate media are reluctant to publish such secrets if they are embarrassing to the government of the day, or other powerful factions. For cases like the Iraq war documents leaked by Chelsea Manning, something like Wikileaks is a good idea, in my view. However, once Assange started using Wikileaks as a tool for his personal and political machinations, I lost respect for him and his organization.

Well, at least under US law, I think there would be a difference between "you" and "someone else" publishing the stuff. My understanding is that a media outlet can publish something that was obtained illegally, as long as they weren't the people who obtained it. In other words, the guy who took it could be in trouble, but not the newspaper.

That said, I suspect that if a newspaper was actually encouraging people to go around breaking into safes or taking classified stuff home from military bases, they could be charged with inciting the crime, or whatever the charge would be in that case. To the extent that there would be any valid charges against Assange, I assume they might turn on that distinction.

The CIA Democrats vs Julian Assange

"...In the targeting of WikiLeaks, the antidemocratic content of this campaign finds its foulest expression. The DNC suit is a deepening of the effort by the Democratic Party to become the premier party of the CIA and the military intelligence apparatus as a whole. As the WSWS has previously explained, the anti-Russia campaign mounted by the Democrats is a reactionary concoction, backed by no factual evidence, aimed at pushing the Trump administration to sharply escalate the war on Syria and adopt a more aggressive policy against Russia."
