Rabble enrols KITTENS!!!

lagatta is onside of course, but Livia (and the ghosts of Renzo and Nadja) wonder why there are no BLACK kittens in the group.

I can't figure out how to load up a photo of Leonardo of the Magnificent Tail, or I would. We adopted him just before Christmas - he's black and the first longish-haired cat I've ever owned or been owned by.

Ken Burch

If I was going to adopt one of those, I'd have to go with "Cogsworth"...it's the ultimate cat name in my view.

lagatta4

That's true, though I also love "Maurice". Not "Mom" Bouchard! "Maurice" is a kindly but rather confused hardware-store owner of a very certain age on a radio comedy show here.

Cogsworth is a splendid name, but it would be impossible for any unilingual francophones or other latin-language speakers to say.  Too many consonants! Thanks for the basket of black kitten love, Unionist!

I'd love to see Leonardo, but spring is coming and you'll be having fun combing him soon.

Hey TB, try this:

1. Click here.

2. Drag your photo as instructed.

3. Right-click on your photo (which will appear on the screen), and select "Copy image location".

4. Come back here, compose your post, and wherever you decide, click on the "image" icon in the menu bar (the icon with the mountain slope).

5. "Paste" from your clipboard into the URL slot - it should paste the "image location" which you copied in step 3 above.

6. Let me know if it works! Mind you, I guess we'll all know if it does. So let me know if it doesn't work!

You don't need to sign up or log in to imgur.com to do this procedure. And there are many other free image upload options if you don't like this one for any reason.

Looking forward to gazing with awe and affection at Leonardo!

Let's see if this works - The best photo of Leo I could find, as black cats are notoriously difficult to photograph! You can't see the magnificent tail here, but it's almost as large as he is. His adult coat is just coming in, the tail seems to have filled out first.

He, his mama and his siblings were found in a dumpster - they were all malnourished and all the other kittens had fleas - we don't know why he didn't. He had some dermatitis and some bald patches from his sibs stress-grooming him and each other. So when we got him from the Humane Society, he was healthy but a little skinny and patchy. He's such a good-natured little guy.

Timebandit Timebandit's picture

It worked! Thanks, U!

Timebandit Timebandit's picture

Just to see if I have the hang of it - Leo the day after I brought him home.

Mr. Magoo

Cute!

Approximately how many times a day does he cross your path, tho?

Timebandit Timebandit's picture

Many! Fortunately, I’m not superstitious.

Unionist

Glad it worked, TB! Lovely Leo!

Here are our roommates.

Oh such goodness. Unionist, one of your wards looks just like my sweet Fearless who passed away about 3 months ago. Let's see if I can post a picture.

It didn't work. I will try flckr to see if that works (different photo though).

Neither worked. My computer is old and so is the operating system. Seems like most of my applications are slowly dying (no longer supported). I changed my profile photo so maybe you can see him that way.

lagatta4

These photos made my day. Have to figure out how to show Livia; I have to find the photo a friend took of her. Later. Leo is either a witch or a Druid though, at Stonehenge. Magnificent ears.

Livia didn't have fleas, but she had ear mites and worms. She is fine now though, and has all her jabs. Her mother and brother have also been adopted. All are black; bro is solid black like Livia, mum is a tuxie like Unionist's and laine's.

Question. What is more humane? Indoor cats or Outdoor cats?

Where I live there are a lot of stray cats (clearly onced owned by people who have no business owning an animal) and there are a lot of Outdoor cats. These cats are outside in the most extreme weather conditions, whether it be 40 Celsius or -40 Celsius. Personally,I find that to be neglect and inhumane.

I dont have a pet. I can't afford vets and I'd be crushed if because of that,my pet ends up dying. However my mother has a cat. The closest that cat came to outdoors is sometimes in the summer she will come out and sit on the balcony. The cat is quite old but in very good health. Is my mother inhumane?

It's just a question I needed answered. I've heard arguments for and against each situation.

Thoughts?

Mr. Magoo

Personally, I think cats should be allowed outdoors, if it's reasonably safe (e.g. you don't live right on a busy road, or whatever).  Certainly cats shouldn't be left outside in the cold, but otherwise it does seem somehow wrong to force them to spend their whole life under a roof.

Years ago, between Ernest and Olivia, Mrs. Magoo and I looked into fostering a cat from a local cat rescue.  They have a strict indoor policy, and I guess we were too honest for our own good, because on the application form we said we personally believe cats should be allowed outdoors, though we would be entirely willing to abide by their rule.  I suppose I should have figured it out when the application form ASKED us how we felt, even though they'd already decided.  Anyway, that was enough that they wouldn't even reply to our e-mails after that.  No polite response saying we've been rejected, no "thanks for trying".  We may as well have told them we make violin strings.

Frankly, that's why we didn't feel bad at all when we purchased Olivia from a pet store, for money.  I'd so much rather plunk down some cash than have to prove my worthiness.  We've both had cats all our lives.  Geez.

lagatta4

I had a similar situation decades ago, after I willingly surrendered a darling deaf white kitten to a no-kill shelter group. I found the poor frightened darling, but already had two cats then. The bossy woman indicated that I couldn't adopt from then as there were no screens on my windows (which was very common in Montréal back then). I love animals but hate classism. I know very poor people who would feed their dogs or cat before themselves.

Mr. Magoo

Quote:

Have I ever told my "Ernest" "window" story here?

Year ago (by my reckoning, 28 of them) when Mrs. Magoo and I lived in a little third story walkup on Locke St. in Hamilton, we had just got Ernest, from a friend of a friend who adopted a pregnant stray.  We had a large window that opened fully, but like you, with no screen.  Ernest would sometimes hop up and sit in the window and grab some fresh air.  But one day, while he was doing this, Mrs. M. got up all of a sudden and must have startled him because... he jumped!

We ran downstairs as quick as we could, and there he was, a bit dazed, and with a drop or two of blood on his nose, but otherwise alive, having landed on his feet, I assume.

The super-dumb part is that a few months earlier, he voluntarily jumped out the same window chasing a fly.

Anyway, after that second time, he didn't defy death on the windowsill much, and shortly after we moved to Toronto, with screens, but he played Flying Squirrel twice and lived to tell about it.

lagatta4

I'm not certain, but I suspect that Livia has done the same thing. Not a screenless window, but a door ajar out to my front porch. I've found her on the roof too. She must have climbed up a very tall tree in the back garden. It has been pruned quite a bit so I doubt she can do that any more. At the time she weighed about 5lb and really was practically a flying squirrel. She weighs a bit more now (but isn't fat). She's a very small cat.

I forgot to tell Timebandit how adorable Leo is, but I suspect she and the family know that...

Timebandit Timebandit's picture

Thanks, lagatta - we're quite smitten with wee Leo.

Unionist, your kitties are gorgeous!

Here's our other kitty-boy, Jack of Many Toes:

laine lowe laine lowe's picture

I love this thread. I never tire of photos of beautiful cats or the tales of their preferences.

Unionist

Thanks everyone for the photos and stories, and for the praise of our pussycats!

If you live in the city, you must not let your cats outside (other than the balcony). It's sad, but it's a saw-off. Left outdoors, they will inevitably be killed by traffic. That's my experience, anyway, since childhood. In the country there are different considerations (predators, owls, foxes...), but at least you can give kitties a fighting chance at enjoying the great outdoors.

Good post Unionist. So many times I see CHAT PERDU in my neighborhood, and it could all have been avoided.

Timebandit Timebandit's picture

Up until a couple of years ago, I had never lost a cat to a violent death. Mostly my cats have been indoors for the first year or two, and allowed out a limited amount. I had two calicos - Rosie and Penelope. Penelope is with us, but Rosie, at 12 years old, was hit by a car on our very quiet residential street. Apparently rush hour traffic frustrated some asshole, so he deked down our block. Normally there are kids skateboarding up and down the street and there are stop signs at both ends of the block.

Rose was Thing 2's kitty. She was utterly devastated. So was I. I've always kept my animals safe, dogs and cats.

So when we adopted Jack that year, we made the decision not to let him out unless it's on a harness and lead, supervised. Same will go for Leo. Penelope still gets out a bit because she pees on things if she doesn't get out of the house periodically. It's an uneasy truce, but at 14 she isn't likely to change.

If you can possibly keep them indoors, do it.

lagatta4

It is very hard to keep a street urchin like Livia indoors. I do let her out in the "green lane" (ruelle verte) behind our co-op apartments, which has a speed limit of 10kmh and where children are encouraged to play. I know that it just takes one arsehole. I think I'd kill him. We have to allow walking-speed through traffic because of emergency vehicles, but now the Plateau borough just south of ours will allow no new parking in lanes - many of our old alleys that were home to "hangars" - two or three-storey sheds that often caught on fire and were demolished in the 1970s and 80s, and to parking spaces including for old hulks of cars and other vehicles. Many if not most of these have become little yards and gardens.

Renzo was very lucky because where I lived for most of his life actually had an enclosed courtyard overgrown with Italian vegetable patches and pergolas. There was no passage to the street.

My first cat, also black, was also killed by a car. I've passionately hated cars from that day on.

Livia was born in a shed in the lane, and since she is a neutered female, she has a small territory and I've never seen her try to exit the lane. When cats are in heat, they will go anywhere. I found Renzo hiding under a car across a busy street near my place some time after I'd adopted him, crying in fear and frustration. I'd already made the appointment for That Nasty Operation, and made sure to keep him in captivity until that date.

We got several arseholes of the same breed as Rosie's murderer, when the decision had been made to put bicycle lanes on both sides of our street and make motor-vehicular traffic one-way south. The street was overly wide for a residential street of its vintage as it had been built to accommodate a tram line. So arseholes used it to avoid the constant traffic jams on our stretch of St-Laurent.

At least it will be relatively quiet during the next World Cup, as Italy was eliminated!

So sorry to learn of your loss, laine lowe.

Is it possible that your Fearless and our Zach were long-lost siblings?

Fearless:

Zach:

Thanks, Unionist! They really do like siblings. This one (from another forum) is of an 8 month old Fearless with his mentor and best buddy, the late Smokey.

That site is password protected - can't access it.

Meanwhile, here is our sweet, quirky Amy, who left us at age 13.

Timebandit Timebandit's picture

My longest-lived cat was also black - Joulsie was 21 when she died. We moved to Winnipeg where she escaped on me and disappeared for 5 weeks. She managed to survive - cataracts, deaf as a stone, dodgy kidneys and rickety AF - for 4 weeks until someone picked her up. They tracked us down a week later. I was convinced she was dead. We had a few more months with her before the kidneys gave up and I had to put her to sleep.

progressive17 progressive17's picture

Do any of you like orange cats? Apparently they were the boat cats on Viking ships. The females come out in many different colour schemes, but apparently they are never all orange. Tortoiseshells, blacks, calicos, all seem to be of the orange cat line.

lagatta4

Joulsie beat Renzo on that. He also went missing for 5 weeks, and winter was coming on - he was "only" 12. Joulsie also lived a few months longer than Renzo did. They were both "super seniors" in cat terms.

Yes, ginger cats are lovely. There are females who are pure orange, but far less often than males, as often a male marmelade kitten will have a calico sister. There are almost no male calicos, as it is a sex-linked trait. I think the very few who are born are sterile.

Black cats have several origins. They came here on the ships of various explorers, fishers and settlers. There are many black cats in Italy, in areas where the Vikings never visited. (Normans did conquer Sicily at one point).

Timebandit Timebandit's picture

Yes, calicos are female - the very rare male calico cats are sterile. I love them, but the are very territorial.

My grandfather always had a ginger Tom named Eric the red. Three Erics over my lifetime.

..we had 2 cats at one time. one was the mother and her offspring was 3 legged..which is why we kept him. he grew up to be a cat to be reckoned with as he could climb trees and once chased a dog out of the yard.

..one winter day he went out as he did for a short while regularly..and didn't return. we searched for him but no luck. a whole year later, the following winter, one evening we heard scratching at the door. when we checked it out..there he was. pookie was his name and one day we found him lying in the street..run over by a car. it was truly a sad day.

Just to be a contrarian, here's a beautiful dog:

doggies are welcome! Is said dog yours?

Yes, that's my Roxy. She comes to work with me most days and is a very sweet-tempered critter.

I was happy to hear that St. John Ambulance brought therapy dogs to Mel Lastman Square. There is nothing more moving than the genuine and unfiltered love we feel for these beautiful animals. They really are a comfort and joy.

Roxy is lovely and lovey!
