Canada's Healthcare System

In another thread, JKR asked for my opinion on systems that are superior to Canada's single payer system under separate provincial authorities. This is a rather large scope project, deserving of its own topic. From a shortage of doctors to a fear of change to a shrinking taxpayer base coupled with an ageing population, how can we improve healthcare delivery.

To start, the delivery of healthcare in Canada has devolved into rationing of budgets by managing expectations via tight control of information that can produce political blowback should the truth escape into the public domain.

I have no axe to grind, no agenda and merely wish to better my own understanding of both our system and better models. I believe a two tier system may be better to reduce wait times but only from my own limited interactions and anecdotal evidence. I'm pretty much a technopeasant hence not a thorough researcher but I will strive to answer JKR's interesting question.

Thanks.

It seems to me that in international comparisons Canada does better than the US but often lags behind other countries like Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Australia, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, the UK, etc.... Canada's longer wait times seem to be one obvious relative weakness. It seems to me we also have inadequate coverage for pharmaceuticals, eye care, home care, and dentistry.

I have no complaints about wait times here in Montreal. However, many may have. I got a GP fairly easily, which apparently is a big problem in the colonies.

Just updating this to push it ahead of the spam. Practically no dental coverage. It can take a long time to see a psychologist or other mental health specialist as well.

I've been lucky with specialists as well.

European nations are much smaller than Canada, making healthcare delivery easier but the social democratic nations all have differing delivery systems that are not universal like Canada. Cost sharing between state, insurance entities and the healthcare recipient is common.
