I enjoyed the political cartoon. A prophecy indeed.

voice of the damned

To say nothing of absorbing the social and economic costs of the endless waves of refugees generated by America’s wars.

So, refugees do, in fact, impose social and economic costs upon recipient countries? This upends several decades of left-wing defense of refugees.

For those slow to comprehend what Billyard(and the whole "weapons of mass migration" crowd) are doing here, they're legitimizing anti-refugee rhetoric, by couching it in anti-imperialist terms. It might sound like he's just enumerating one more evil resulting from the invasion of foreign countries, but that particular critique only works if refugees really are a burden(just like the xenophobic Right always said they were). Otherwise, it would suffice to just mention the negative effect the invasions have on the attacked countries.

Yes, I dare mention. Both Site C dam and the Kinder Morgan pipeline are tyrannies-economic tyrannies as they are cash grabs for the corporate driven empire as it uses the neoliberal tool kit to kill nation states and vacuum up the world’s wealth and resources.

I thought the whole point of Kinder Morgan(and this is according to Billyard himself) was to sell oil to China. So why would "the empire" be trying to force that through? Isn't the US supposed to be trying to stop the economic rise of China? Surely helping them acquire more energy would be going against that agenda.

Refugees are a burden when they arrive and some are a burden for their lifetime. They don't face the entry requirements other immigrants do. The worse their health situation the faster they move to the top of the list.

We don't have the physical capacity to accept billions of refugees. There has to be some sort of limit or our social supports will collapse for everyone. I don't think we are taking enough refugees but the feds are off-loading the costs to communities and provinces. It does mean less social housing for people already living in Canada. It does increase the numbers of homeless people in our cities.

When the left dismisses the valid concerns of working-class and poor people they send people into the arms of the right.

Painting La Meute as all xenophobic cruel and selfish people is self-defeating. They have valid fears and concerns. The wave of refugees coming over the border in Canada are doing so in Quebec. We don't have enough places to put them. I read that Toronto is overwhelmed. Many families are in student dorms and so far have no where to go in September. Our medicare system is already strained. We already don't have enough residences for seniors so they fill up hospitals. Our mental health care system is in even worse shape.

It's all very romantic to say that no one is illegal and we should be compassionate but I don't want to give up health care or wait longer for it and my mother, 87, has another year and a half to wait to get into a seniors building that provides five meals a week and a community room. I want pharmacare and dentacare.

They are passing pamphets in Plattsburgh

https://montreal.ctvnews.ca/pamphlets-in-plattsburgh-guide-asylum-seeker...

The pamphlets say 'Plattsburgh Cares' If they cared they take in some of these people instead of burdening us with all of them. I don't know what kind of legal recourse Canada, especially Quebec  can take to stop these pamphlets. Maybe even SUE the government of NY.

I agree with the PQ's idea for dealing with all these asylum seekers. Make them live else where in Quebec besides Montreal. The regions,Val D'Or,Northeast and Northwest Quebec. It would take much of the burden off of Montreal.

This issue (plus the current trade issues with the US) is propping up the CPC and killing the Liberals. I don't know what they are thinking. It's about being tough or at least having a plan. We're supposed to be tolerant and generous but where is the red line?

They are,at the moment,ILLEGALS. Why they are not sent back to the US in which they are really fleeing makes no sense. 40% of these asylum seeekers want to stay in Quebec and 60% want to live elsewhere, mainly Ontario.

I think the feds should take a page out of the PQ's idea and spread them around the country to areas not traditionally chosen by immigrants. The Maritimes,The Prairies,The Yukon,Northern Ontario and Northern Quebec. And the attitude from the feds should be,take it or leave it.

It's clear the populace is not happy about this. What are the feds thinking? The populace will win you elections, not asylum seekers. And realistically,we can't cater to every asylum seeker out there. ESPECIALLY those who are fleeing the US and not war torn countries. The priority is the Canadian people.

What is going to get the Cons elected in 2019? Immigration and trade. It amazes me how dense the Liberals are on obvious issues.

Stop taking the high horse on everything. Invest in some fortitude and get tough with the US on trade and put an end to our open border. I don't know why they bother putting up signs that say 'you can't pass this point or face arrest' when the sign is really 'welcome all'.

Enough already. Show some LEADERSHIP FFS.
