I agree, Trump's policy toward Russia hasn't quite been what one would expect from a paid Russian agent. My best guess is the whole Russiagate story basically goes like this...
In line with longstanding fixations, Candidate Trump wondered aloud about getting rid of NATO, and expressed admiration for President Putin.
Liking the sound of all this, and also aware that Trump had business-related interests in maintaining good ties with Russia, Putin "Who will rid me"-ed an order for Russian intelligence agencies to assist Trump in getting elected.
Russian intelligence undertook this task, Iran-Contra style, in order to leave Putin with plausible deniability.
Trump somehow figured out what the Russians were up to, and engaged in collusion ranging somewhere between "tacit encouragement" and "aborted attempts at outright conspiracy".
After winning the election, Trump basically farmed out foreign-policy to the usual establishment characters, punctuated by occassional outbursts of his own quasi-isolationist populism.
Trump is reluctant to acknowledege Russian assistance(even if unsolicited by him) for fear of calling into question the legitimacy of his election.
The legal outcome of all this will depend on whether or not Trump's campaign broke any laws in their collusion, not how serious or effective the collusion was.
I can drink enough booze to float a battleship... too bad trump is still president when I sober up (a bit)... 8-P
