Municipal politics in ON are not party politics, so when a questionable person declares their Mayoral candidacy, it doesn't imply that lots of Ontarians are behind them and will support them. Literally anyone can toss their hat in the Mayoral race, so long as they can fill out the form and scrape up any required fee.

I would generally agree with this analysis, but with Blayne Lastman giving this race a pass, there is no major right wing candidate in the race except for John Tory, who is as "establishment" as one can get. Given the very sizeable bloc of voters who preferred the more insurgent right wing Rob Ford in 2010 and Doug Ford in 2014, as well as the historical moment that we have been living in that has seen a rise of the "alt-right" in general, I would not rule out a more impressive showing for Goldy than your typical nuisance candidate. She's not going to win, but simply having her out there promoting her ugly ideas is bad news.

The fact that it took Ford three days to distance himself from Goldy after taking a picture with her this weekend sends a pretty clear message that the two have a lot in common, even if not formally aligned. I think there is a real risk she will do very well in the election, and that's terrifying.

With these types, their support for The State of Israel actually aligns with their anti-Semitism. They support the idea of a "Jewish state"(especially one which puts its Jewish residents in constant danger through its aggressive military response to the Palestinians) because they hope it will lead to every Jew leaving THEIR states.

In a FPTP race, I don't care if she does "well", I care if she does "best". And I don't really see that as a threat.
TBH, I'd be more worried about her cleverly choosing a ward and running for Council. Sure, it's not Mayor, but each Councillor is now about twice as "powerful" or "influential" as before, and she wouldn't be the first wildcard to win a Council seat.
As far as using her to smear Ford, and Ford to smear her at the same time, I think this supposed "alignment" of the two of them says more about our cheerful and unquestioned assumptions about them than anything else. If he comes out and supports her then I guess he supports her. If he stood near her in a tent where he stood near lots of people who wanted a photo, I'm not ready to assume it's because he's behind her all the way. Politicians have their picture taken standing near people all the time -- it's literally part of their job. Why else would Rosalynn Carter let her picture be taken standing near serial killer John Wayne Gacy? Because he was surely one of hundreds that day.
