Technology Inc’s Self-Policing Is Bunk

Nothing wrong with companies trying to be "proactive", but I would definitely agree that in matters of public interest (like privacy and such) governments should still be keeping an eye on them.

But when it comes to stuff like "my phone is taking over my LIFE!" or "my kid just wants to be on Facebook all day!" or "this game is so addictive I haven't bathed in weeks", I don't think that's the government's job to police, and I don't really care if Apple or Facebook or Call of Duty do anything at all.  That's like saying that a bestselling novel has some special duty of care to be less popular, or to ensure that people only read a few pages at a time.

When I was a kid, I definitely, totally preferred being indoors on a nice day, reading a book, while my parents implored me to go outside.  Nobody ever insisted that Franklin W. Dixon had some special responsibility to urge me to not read his books, or that it was his fault I was following the mysterious adventures of Frank and Joe, rather than enjoying real life.
