Toronto: Defend Palestine/CUPW! Stop B'nai Brith/Israel Lobby!

Where: B'nai Brith Canada, 15 Hove Street, North York, Ontario (Sheppard Ave. West & Bathurst)

CUPW has been smeared by B'nai Brith due to CUPW's principled advocacy for the human rights of the Palestinian Postal Service Workers Union (PPSWU), which B'nai Brith accuses of being 'pro-terrorist', but B'nai Brith has failed to produce an iota of actual evidence that the PPSWU supports terrorism.

In fact, the PPSU has vigorously denied B'nai Brith's allegation, while the International Labor Network of Solidarity and Struggles had denounced B'nai Brith's attack on CUPW and the PPSWU.

CUPW is only the latest in a long list of victims of B'nai Brith's smear campaign targeting advocates for Palestinian Human Rights...

"B'nai Brith Canada is girding for a protest. Only this time, it will be the target...

'Recently, B'nai Brith launched a smear campaign against CUPW, which has taken a principled stand in defence of Palestinian human rights,' the protest organizers wrote in Facebook.

'As a result, CUPW has become the latest victim in a long list of smear campaigns launched by B'nai Brith Canada to silence human rights defenders who are critical of Israel's violations of international law.

'Enough is enough. Please join us in communicating to B'nai Brith that we will no longer remain silent in the face of its constant attacks on those who demand freedom and justice for the Palestinian people.'

The Jewish Defence League (JDL), which has called the Aug 29 rally 'a pro-Islamic terror march in the Jewish community,' is planning a counter-demonstration. On Aug 27, JDL Canada director Meir Weinstein wrote Premier Doug Ford saying that 'Al Quds Day gangs are planning to march through the Jewish community. They will call for the destruction of Israel and insult Holocaust survivors who live in the Sheppard and Bathurst Jewish community. We need you to stop this ANTI-SEMITIC march. Please take action.'

'The protest has been organized to express support for the principled stance of CUPW,' Lascaris told CJN. He promised the protest will be 'peaceful, as are our objectives."

"If a pro-Palestine protest in a Jewish-Canadian neighbourhood was meant to intimidate [It wasn't], the head of B'nai Brith Canada says it didn't work. In fact, says B'nai Brith Canada CEO Michael Mostyn, it did the opposite. 'I can tell you we were not intimidated. What it did was galvanize the community.'

What ensued for two hours was a no-holds barred screamfest over loudspeakers - with opposing factions stationed on opposite sides of the street separated by Toronto police. I remember CUPW supporting the Palestinian cause decades ago. Here in Montréal, they were among the union militants most involved in the cause, along with the CSN central council. CUPW was certainly in the forefront in the FTQ!
