Don't respond to right wing attack dogs on twitter -- twitter has their backs

The following is a one-sided list of tweets deemed by twitter to be worthy of suspending my account. They were in response to some pretty wild material that included sexist posts using female characteristics as an insult. My responses were in response to some crazy posts typical of the right on twitter. However -- in my responding twitter protected them. My angry responses as you can see below (complete I did not delete anything) are pretty tame considering what I saw every day and what was coming at me in that conversation presumably from the one who sent the complaint.

Funny that they call the left snowflakes but cannnot take the below responses to their aggression.

Maybe being booted of twitter is a good thing since I am not okay with the idea that I can be attacked and then suspended for responding.

What happened?

We have determined that this account violated the Twitter Rules. Specifically, for:

Violating our rules against abusive behavior.

You may not engage in the targeted harassment of someone, or incite other people to do so. We consider abusive behavior an attempt to harass, intimidate, or silence someone else’s voice.

Hey here is a right wing freak who thinks twitter is a private conversation space for his nutter crowd. It's a public place. There is no such thing as butting in here. https://t.co/EkXpRnuPeF

This is a prime example of the out-of-control crazy desperation right wing idiots are displaying now. Things must really feel bad for them. https://t.co/u9JGlpu18I

So this ignorant rude twit @reduxitSpem accuses me of wanting to block him and then blocks me after posting an unhinged ungrammatical bit of garbage. Guy needs to meet a mirror.

@ReduxitSpem Thanks for proving you are pathetic and ignorant without anything better as an answer.

I was banned for 24 hours for tweeting a harsh post to Laura Ingraham. I didn't use any misogynist language and I didn't threaten her.

This is why I don't use twitter anymore. Well almost indefinitely.

Pondering

Be more clever. Report them first. Don't take bait. Go ahead and lure them if you can.

I think the issue is that calling a person an idiot and saying they spouted garbage as I did is not targetted harassment.

I think Twitter is confused about its rules and the meaning of its terms. If they want to say do not be rude (even in response to crap coming from the other side) they can say so. Then they can shut the whole thing down.

Otherwise, targetted harassment should have a meaning beyond an exchange without swearwords or anything personal.

In any case what twitter is doing is testing its own value and coming up short.

maybe ya'll got a time out?

I dont think so. I have sent Donald Trump some very inappropriate tweets,I've called him everything under the sun I also tweeted a photoshopped picture of Trump on the ground riddled in bullet holes. No time out. No warnings. Nothing.

But for some reason it was a bridge too far to criticize very harshly Laura Ingraham.

Twitter's rules and terms of service make no sense.

But do you also feel that the fact that person was a "right winger" was why you were suspended?  Is Twitter "protecting" right wing opinions?

I don't know -- for a right winger is being called right wing a big deal?

Since when is the language I used anything but normal on Twitter where you see extremes all the time?

In any case I refused to delete these tweets on the grounds that they are not harassment.

The point is that what I said ought not to be censored or called harassment. And Twitter allows actual harassment.

I got an asnwer from twitter. It was incomprehensible. Here is my reply:

I have received your response. I am shocked by this given that I was responding to behaviour that was much more problematic -- including a person who used a gender stereotype to attack me -- Calling someone a right wing idiot you say is not ok but using a gender stereotype to attack a person is? Your position quite frankly is incomprehensible.

You have rewarded an abusive person by silencing me. I have reported extreme cases of racism, sexism, and attacks on people based on personal attributes -- without action in most cases. Your response was to label me, after having an exchange with a person who came out to attack me, has made this process difficult.

So too is Twitter's opaque statements -- the allotted time frame? How on earth am I supposed to know how long the allotted time frame is?

Your statement in the appeal -- received after sending a couple messages is that I should add to the case if I want but not repeat an appeal. Of course how to add to the case is a secret?

There there is the statement that I can still get access to browse or send personal messages. Interesting. There is no way of finding out how I might be able to do this.

There there is the contradictory language -- what is the difference between a lockout and a suspension? I got a message saying I was suspended trying to log in but now a message saying I am locked out threatening suspension? What is a lockout?

I see this awful process is of course a tool being used by right-wing people attacking anyone who complains about what they post. Of course, I cannot see how I can even see the context of my tweets or a record of what was tweeted to me -- again because the so-called limited access appears to be no access at all.

I cannot see how your process, which is mostly secret, can be complied with. I sincerely regret the many years I spent investing in your platform. I have no idea what the public sees of my account or if my followers are gone or what. I have opened an account on Mastodon just because I have no hope in your process or fairness.

It is ironic that publicly you say you are trying to make the place safer and yet you punish a person who had what is a tense but fairly mild interaction that while certainly frustrated and angry cannot be called targeted harassment. It was a response from a rude comment to start with. I did not know who that person was or anything about them - the response was only related to their tweets to me. I did not look for that person. They came looking for me. It was not sustained for any time. It did not bring up anything personal-- just the character of the tweets. Yet this is what you call targeted harassment. since there is so much actual targeted harassment allowed on twitter, I have to ask, do you know what the words mean?

The requirement for me to delete tweets that were in response to harassment -- and even shaming characteristics deemed to be female (saying I cry like a girl) is unbelievable. I simply cannot delete responses to harassment.

I recognize that you are in the US and you have an election and you are all taking sides individually. I recognize that in the day before my lockout or suspension that I criticized twitter for the horrible spammy notifications policy. I can only wonder if your grotesque, out-of-proportion response is due to one of these.

I can only presume that Twitter, which allows racist, sexist, personal attacks is not a place that is open to those who stand up to those.

I will find alternate places in social media to post this letter since I have no idea if a person or a bot will read it.

Twitter is dying -- but let's be clear: its wounds are self-inflicted and its bizarre lurches in moderating is part of that. I don't even know if anyone will read this response to your heavy handedness.

Sean in Ottawa

I have no plans to delete my complaints about a right winger who was attacking others as a condition to come back. You may think my tweets (above) are harsh or even rude. But for twitter they are mild and certainly not "targetted harassment."

To even start to be targetted harassment, I would have to be initiating or sustaining the engagement. You would think i would have to identify something personal, true or not about the person, rather than a response to tweets leveled at me.

Likely this means I will remain gone from twitter. I am hoping that I can find better alternatives. anyone else here using Mastodon - or have any other ideas?

Sean in Ottawa

I gave in and deleted the tweets to get access back but it is sad to have to delete a response to a troll who actually does harass people.
