George Banes Once again the NDP are left dealing with the consequences of 16 years of Liberals running things. Hopefully once the fall session ( yes we are having a fall session unlike Christy Clark who spent as little time in Victoria as possible)the NDP will now come to some sensible fixes to help turn things around.
Maximum allowable rent increases under review by B.C. task force
The chair of the province’s Rental Housing Task Force said it’s assessing the formula for the maximum allowable rent increase, after a 4.5-per-cent hike for 2019, announced on Friday, left many Vancouverites reeling.
Spencer Chandra Herbert, MLA for Vancouver-West End, said it’s been looking at the maximum rental increase formulas of other provinces and assessing their policies.

Apparently I live in one of the most unequal places in the world when it comes to housing. My daughter and nieces and nephews understand this reality very well. This is a ratio between income and house prices. An immediate minimum wage raise would offset this. However because we elected a NDP/Green government they think Millennials and others in visitor and retirement service industries don't need to make a living wage. As of June 1, 2018, the B.C. minimum wage will be increased to $12.65 from $11.35 per hour. It will increase three more times each June thereafter to reach $15.20 on June 1, 2021.

The Big Reason We’re Not Serious about Tackling Housing Affordability
Homeowners in hot markets have reaped big gains and will punish politicians who try to erase them.

The BC NDP promised $400 to tenants in the last election, but perhaps the Berlin approach is better, eh! Whatever it is, the BC NDP needs to start moving on this file!
As housing market explodes, Berlin freezes rents for 1.5 million apartments
Meanwhile Landlords in BC get around rent controls by charging for parking and storage lockers etc and then jacking up those fees Its time to freeze all the rents in BC for at least 5 years
'
I think the only real way to end the housing affordability crisis in BC is for the government of BC to build a sufficient amount of new affordable housing. I think other schemes such as rent controls will not be nearly enough over the mid to longer term. Rent controls will reduce investment in rental housing and that will worsen the housing affordability situation.
I disagree. Just like health care we need to move the private sector out of housing and bring the government back in.
CO-OPs are the way to go for those who cannot afford to purchase a home. We have to move away from condominiums where property management companies are getting rich at the homeowners' expense.
This is horrific!

That's a big one and combining that with the Squamish Nation project across the street that should be good news for people in search of a home in a choice area of the Lower Mainland.
