Andrew Scheer - I can win the “bread-and-butter” labour vote

From year-end interview today in The Toronto Star - Not posting the entire interview (you can click the link at end to read in its entirety) but just excerpts I found interesting

#1 - Andrew Scheer wishes that the NDP would focus their attention on the Liberals and leave the Conservatives alone

Andrew Scheer openly wishes Singh was doing better, and frequently encourages New Democrats to focus their political fire on the Trudeau Liberals — their common enemy — rather than take shots at his party.

Left-wing vote splits are important in ridings where strong Conservative candidates can come up the middle to win.

#2 - Scheer is convinced he can pull off a "Doug Ford" win the blue collar-labour-union vote.

(Jerry) Dias believes the Conservative Party lost a lot of support among unionized workers after the Stephen Harper government legislated restrictions on organized labour.

Scheer agrees those moves hurt the Conservatives he now leads, saying he got push back when he went door-to-door. But now he thinks the issues he’s raising — the “job-killing carbon tax,” among others — are resonating with workers including manual labourers.

“I’m not going to win ‘big labour,’” said Scheer, but he is convinced he can win back what Conservative Party strategists have often called the “bread-and-butter” labour vote.

Let me summarize:

Scheer is in fantasyland.

All parties wish that their opposition would focus on each other instead of them. The Conservatives are no different.

I am waiting to see any evidence that Scheer did that well on the labour vote. However, it is possible that the "For the people" lie worked with some people. Still, his claim that the Ford lies could be reproduced really exaggerates how well they worked. Ford only got 40% of the vote. His party increased less than the NDP did during the election writ period. If the NDP had started in second they probably would have won. Ford did not perform that much over the standard right wing vote and did not get that much of the Liberal vote considering its collapse -- more went NDP.

The previous election was above average for the NDP in result and below average for the Conservatives. Still the NDP gained 10%, the Conservatives only 9% while the Liberals lost 19%. I do not think there is much evidence that the Conservatives, despite lying their heads off, actually broke much significant new ground despite the historic blowout of the Liberals.

ETA - I have no intention of wasting my time listening to the Scheer try to bullshit on this topic.

Mr. Magoo

I think Scheer's actual quote was "I'm about as exciting as bread and butter".

Quote:
However, it is possible that the "For the people" lie worked with some people.

Sidebar:  "People" or "People's" in the name of a party, a slogan, a policy, etc., always gives me the creeps.  And yes, I'm including Bernier's new party.   When, in recent memory, has "[something something] For The People" actually been anything for the people?

This guy is a fucking weiner. If politics has turned into an episode of eTalk where the media is full of awe in front of  pretty rich Canadian royalty , Scheer wouldn't even make the cast of a Wonder bread commercial. I agree...he's an idiot to think the other parties should stop picking on the poor ol Conservatives...Deluded much?

This man is even more desperate than Legault was and is in Québec. That makes him dangerous, I said in the last Quebec election and that turned out swell.

I'm sure Howdy Doody will try in sad desperation that he and his party stand with the majority of Canadians, never mind workers.

I couldn't bring myself to finish the column..The Tories trigger me by just existing. But I think for the moment he's a deluded clown but may prove to be a dangerous clown in the coming election.

On verra.

Neverr said Scheer was great. Maybe I mistook what was said. Scheer is far from great. A great big dud but not great.

-- saw that you thought he was a dud -- we thought Harper was and that this was great because he could not get elected.

Scheer is the typical kind of politician you get when one starts politicking in school and have almost no other working life experience.

While attending university, Scheer worked in the correspondence department of the Office of the Leader of the Opposition (OLO).[11][21] Scheer also worked on Ottawa city councillor Karin Howard's youth advisory committee.

Scheer ran as a school trustee for the Ottawa-Carleton Catholic School Board in the 2000 Ottawa municipal elections,[22] but lost to Kathy Ablett.[23]

Andy Pandy is not wrong when he says he can win the blue-collar labour vote that Doug Dealer attracted. But that wont be with labour friendly policies but with appealing to xenophobia and hate. I believe a large chunk of that blue-collar vote already votes for the Cons to begin with.
