I would say that Reagan, not Trump, was "the quintessential American cliche come to life", in that he seemed to embody a return to some nostalgically remembered past.
(And yes, I realize that Trump appeals to people who wish that the game was still as rigged for straight white males as it was fifty years ago, but in his persona and mannerisms, he's still very much a man of the current era. With Reagan, I often had the feeling that I was listening to a man speaking from the 1950s, and I think a lot of other people did as well.)
I agree that Justin embodies a certain idea about Canada, specifically nostalgia for what I could term as the post-Expo feeling of national optimism from the late 60s to about the late 70s. Bi and Bi, Rene Simard, the metric-bug, and all that. Basically, the era of his father's first tenure, prior to his defeat by Joe Clark.

While that may have been his brand, and he may still want to project it, to most people now he is just another politician. His current "support" exists because people see the Conservatives as worse and the NDP as a vote spliter that could allow the Conservatives to win.

The Trudeau brand has taken quite a hit but I found this analysis by a Canadian defence lawyer revealing. He takes the approach of cross examination or interpetation of Trudeau's words and actions to conclude that Trudeau is racist.

Racism is not a personal attribute, it's a social system.
It can be both personal and systemic. Trudeau's actions show him to be a racist and the fact that he can become PM shows that racism is systemic in our society.
