Thanks for the solid reply, cco. I learned French, as an adult immigrant to Québec. And I'm not even all that interested in becoming PM.
As for other languages - yes, but let's start with respect and resources for those languages, then let evolution take its course. I'm happy that the behind-the-scenes years-long lobbying by a Jewish anglo MP from Québec (yes, he's bilingual) was instrumental in achieving the first, ever, simultaneous translation in the House of Commons of a speech by a Winnipeg MP - in an Indigenous language. High time, but hopefully the future is here.
As for Libby Davies, I have huge respect for her. But when she was mauled by her co-deputy leader of the NDP (and by Jack Layton) for saying, in an unguarded moment, that the occupation of Palestine began in 1948 - she crumbled, and never uttered a word of dissent thereafter, at least, not on Palestine. That frightening incident, besides showing how abuse and intimidation are the norm in the NDP (as in other parties) to force everyone to toe the line, convinced me that she didn't have the stuff it takes to be a leader. I say that with sadness, and I wish her well.
