100 Indian Tanks Now Near China Border In Eastern Ladakh, More To Come

India did briefly use tanks here in the 1962 India-China war (five were air dropped) but they were withdrawn after the humiliating defeat. Now, the tanks of the Indian Army are back in Eastern Ladakh for good.

Quote:

The working class of India struck back hard on Friday in a nationally coordinated labor action led by the Center of Indian Trade Unions. The historic work stoppage is by far the largest strike the country—and possibly the world—has ever seen, and reflects a high degree of class-conscious militancy on the subcontinent.

The workers' demands include monetary controls to prevent inflation, universal social security coverage, a rise in the minimum wage, an end to pro-employer labor law amendments, an assured pension for the entire working population, and a ban on foreign ownership of the country's strategic sectors, such as defense, insurance and railways. India's broad and diverse communist movement took the lead in preparing the ground for the nationwide action.

A move to offset corruption by the Indian government has left some Canadians holding potentially worthless rupees.

Quote:

He said the action was being taken to combat corruption, money laundering and counterfeiting in India, where there is a significant amount of so-called undeclared, untaxed "black money.''

People in India were told to deposit their discontinued notes in banks and post office savings accounts before the end of the year. They were also told they could exchange limited amounts for new 500 and 2,000 rupee bills that are being delivered.

But for anyone with the cancelled currency outside India _ including members of the large Indian diaspora in Canada — there appears to be confusion on what to do with the discontinued bills.

The High Commission of India in Ottawa said it did not yet have any official guidance on the matter.

Mr. Magoo

Canada phased out the penny a few years ago, but this from the Royal Canadian Mint:

Quote:
How long will I have to turn in my pennies?

The penny will retain its value indefinitely. As such, there is no time limit for redeeming pennies.

So businesses may choose not to accept them at the till, but there's no specific day on which they become valueless.  If there were such a day then that's the day I'd be out $11.64.

This is horrible horrible news. Very heartbreaking to see almost 400 people killed in almost two weeks.

This conflict is escalating at an alarming rate and I sincerely hope it ends now.

Thanks to North Report for posting the links and updating babblers on this most serious conflict!!!!!

What Next As Tensions Rise in India, Pakistan

Pakistan says it downed two Indian fighter jets, two pilots captured.

Thanks NDPP!

Not crazy about some of the icm links but I have no choice but to use them. At least this one is about the PM of Pakistan, Kahn, pleading for a peaceful diplomatic approach in resolving!

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/feb/27/pakistan-pm-imran-khan-app...

Hopefully there isn't anymore fighting and this leads to a long lasting peace!

WWWTT

Apparently this is the first time 2 nuclear armed nations have directly downed military jets from each side (or something like that.

The US and China has called for restraint from the two powers. Here's something on China's response.

Pakistan has closed it's airspace and as a result Air Canada has had to cancell flights to India. Not sure what other airlines are affected?

This brings up the question of Canada's South Asian communities. Can this conflict spill over into Canada? Conflicts from other regions have appeared in Canada before, so this is a reasonable question.

I myself blame the British imperial colonialism! They created or at the least expanded the divisions and should be shamed!

It would be nice if more babblers took interest and commented in this thread!!!

Hurtin Albertan

At least with Pakistan closing their airspace there will be much less risk to civilian air traffic.  I've also read reports of at least 1 instance of Indian artillery fire across the LOC resulting in civilian casualties on the Pakistan side of the LOC.

Hopefully sanity will prevail and a peaceful negotiated settlement can be reached, but given my generally dim view of human nature I'd be happy if they keep the nuclear weapons in the bunkers.

Tensions Rise Between India & Pakistan Over Kashmir

https://youtu.be/6jdEZewQYpA

"We're in a war. That war could escalate. It's quite terrifying..."

WWWTT

Ya that’s a good straight up talking down from George NDPP!

The UK France Russia should give up their permanent seats at the UN for India Pakistan Indonesia Brazil Nigeria etc etc!

NDPP

Fat chance.

WWWTT

Ya unfortunately NDPP that’s why the human race right now is on the brink of nuclear war.

The UN should be having an emergency meeting right now with every member ready to help. Oh no but Venezuela, fuckin Venezuela so called US “regime change”is more important to the west.

Heres a solution, India and Pakistan should invade the UK and set up a Kashmir government!

Hurtin Albertan

You need to work the Chinese into the Uk invasion scheme somehow.  Just like the current situation, it just wouldn't be as good without the Chinese.

Thanks for the updates NDPP and North Report!!!

I will search for some updates myself but in this case, no new fighting is good news!

Russia is a good candidate to host peace talks. But I believe that this is a job for Iran. I think Iran is a country both India and Pakistan trust and rely on? But I’m not sure. Also Turkey.

Here’s anot link with some data

There was also an Indian helicopter shot down. Perhaps this is the second plane Pakistan is referring to they downed?

voice of the damned

WWWTT wrote:

Given the ideology of the current Indian leadership, I doubt that any religious-oriented Muslim state, let alone one with the theocratic credentials of Iran, would be considered an honest-broker in this particular situation.

WWWTT

You could be right? I’m not sure that’s why the question mark. But India and Iran have good trade relations I believe. I was basing my comment on that.

And yes, if Iran toned the religion down a few notches, they would b helping themselves more than anything.

In fact, if everyone toned the fuckin religion down a few notches, maybe these two great powerful nations would be somewhere else now?

WWWTT

Up to this point I have been indifferent as to fault. If it was anyone it would be the UK.

But after more research it looks like the Indian PM Modi is trying to score political points here. And he’s playing with fire!

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2019/02/india-modi-criticised-politicising-pakistan-stand-190228115747005.html

Modi, to me is starting to look more and more like western imperialist leader that preaches democracy

Also at this point, I think that Pakistan didn’t commit the bombing

Ok thanks for the updates North Report. According to Rachna Singh, and as I feared, this conflict will spread into Canada.

And I seriously doubt Justin has the intellectual capacity to defuse.  Instead, his promoters will probably encourage him to keep his trap shut.

Asia Times: US Checks India-Pakistan Tensions From Spiking

https://t.co/zLzXLHYWyN

"The crisis situation may be deemed to have blown over..."

WWWTT

Thanks for the link NDPP!

This crisis, for me, is begging for speculation as to what's happening behind the scenes.

And the key players may very well be the US (India ally) vs China (Pakistan ally) in some kind of variation of a proxy war. The dynamics involved, at the least are complicated.

The immediate and effective response by both Pakistani and Indian militaries probably set off huge alarm bells in Washington Moscow and Beijing. And I wouldn't be surprised if Xi Jin Ping Trump and Putin shelved everything for the last couple days so that they can focus on immediately defusing the tension between Kahn and Modi!

I suspect that there's a hint in all of this, that there's no military in the world that has a distinct advantage over any other.

This swift but terrifying conflict could have easily been between the US and China!

NDPP

Tensions seem to be subsiding somewhat for now. But as you suggest the region is a powderkeg and continuing geopolitical rivalry means anything can happen.

De-Escalation Delayed: India & Pakistan Exchange Shelling on Kashmir Border, Casualties Reported

Western leaders are not getting very involved in any defusing this I noticed. Major egional powers are ALL sending diplomatic envoys to simmer down both sides.
