Wilson-Raybould, Trudeau, and SNC-Lavalin

I felt we needed yet another thread to follow the news as it develops on this matter.

I particularly thought we could use a thread title that wouldn't become obsolete in a few days (because of being too specific); which wasn't too prejudicial in tone; and which avoided misspellings.

Let me start with a question:

Has anyone heard a clear explanation from JWR as to why she resigned from Veteran Affairs? All I've seen is the letter she issued at the time, which doesn't appear to offer a reason.

Trudeau mulls Wilson-Raybould's fate in Liberal caucus as Scheer makes formal bid for RCMP probe

And: MPs to hold emergency debate at 7 p.m. ET on the former justice minister's testimony.

Gerry Butts is back! He has just written to the Justice Committee asking to appear and give evidence, after hearing what JWR had to say.

Okay well now this is getting very interesting. I wonder if it is to stab Trudeau in the back or help him out.

I would presume it's to help Trudeau. When Butts resigned, he wrote: "Any accusation that I or the staff put pressure on the Attorney General is simply not true." So he didn't actually say that Trudeau didn't put pressure. But his statement is still very much in contradiction with JWR's testimony of continuous pressure by several individuals.  If he backtracks on that, his credibility is gone.

Anyway, isn't he Trudeau's chum from way back?

Hi Unionist. Your link doesn’t work. And yes I agree with you, he’s probably going to try to support Justin. But who knows for sure hey?

The problem with getting rid of the Trudeau Liberals is that we will be saddled with another Conservative government.

So what if SNC-Lavalin goes out of business. Are there not other Canadian construction companies around who would take their place?

NorthReport

Wilson-Raybould has PM aspirations but will the Liberals ever welcome her back after this? Maybe she would be better off seeking the NDP leadership when that becomes available.

A lot of foreign construction companies could take their place internationally.

NorthReport

Of course Butts and all the others will be there to support Trudeau as they must close ranks if they are to win the next election. Unfortunately for the Liberals the Abbotsford MP didn't get the message how to go about it in an appropriate manner in time.

Now the icm have banished him from their centre ring spotlight performance, scribbled out Justin’s name in the script for Scheer. And just in time before Jagmeet can wedge his foot in the door

Trudeau is not going to resign and Wilson-Raybould as of now will probably be the Vancouver Granville candidate for the Liberals in the next election. She will  make her move for the Liberal leadership after Trudeau is defeated whenever that occurs

But what s golden opportunity for the NDP!

I would like to call BS on the CBC’s checking into the opinions of the residents in Vancouver-Granville. My hunch is that they had to search far and wide to find those that support the PM over his former Attorney General.

Sorry but the CBC and the Toronto Star are way too biased to be be considered as credible media opinion on this SNC scandal

Well, I dunno. It might depend how many people in Granville voted Liberal because they liked Wilson-Raybauld, and how many voted Liberal because they wanted a Liberal governent.

If you voted Liberal because you wanted a Liberal government, then it is NOT in your interest for Wilson-Raybauld to be widely viewed as the one telling the truth in this situation. Because if her version of the events becomes the generally accepted one, it might make people across the country less likely to vote Liberal.

If Karl Nerenberg is right, that Andrew Sheer and the Conservatives are benfiting the most from the scandal, it is incumbent on the NDP and other progressive interests to make sure the public knows that Stephen Haprer did the exact same thing while in power (Nerenberg gives one example in his article).

If the left doesn't do its due diligence by demonstrating to Canadians that the Conservatives and Liberals are cut from the same backroom-dealing cloth, then we will be facing a Conservative majority after the October election. We need to call out Conservative BS, tout de suite.

@Geoff

Fist off the article by Karl Nurenberg. In my opinion, Karl is a terrible writer. And his latest example is the worst! If he continues, I will consider not supporting rabble anymore.

Karl is more than happy to prove he’s a willing obedient servant of the icm.  If he’s the main federal political writer for rabble, then by default, rabble is nothing more than another eager recruit of the icm.

Here’s my advice, take what Karl writes, and toss it. Then ignore the imperialist corporate media of Canada. In other words, shut the f’n tv off! Finally, do a search for your local NDP riding association and get in contact with the executive members and ask to be put on their mailing list and don’t forget to ask if you can attend their next executive meetings.

Seems quite clear to me: JWR and her ministry decided that SNC should face due process for their crimes and that decision was made. Trudeau et al muscled her to reverse this position. She refused and was shuffled out of office. Yes-man Lametti was brought in to do what she would not. With indecent haste he did so. The rest is history. It's clearly obstruction of justice and outrageously so. Trudeau cannot possibly continue and if there is an iota of honour in the man, the office or the parliamentary process he must resign.

Lametti Discussed SNC-Lavalin With PMO After Swearing-In

https://ipolitics.ca/2019/02/28/lametti-discussed-snc-lavalin-with-pmo-a...

"Justice Minister David Lametti said he was briefed on the SNC-Lavalin case and deferred prosecution agreements after taking office last month, even though the Public Prosecution Service had already decided that it would proceed with a trial against the Quebec firm..."

This is what corporate rule looks like.

The JWR affair has opened up a nice little window into how the Canadian msm collaborates with political power for propaganda and 'official messaging':

Wary of Reach Into Media

https://www.blacklocks.ca/wary-of-reach-into-media/

"Jody Wilson-Raybould in Feb.27 testimony at the Commons justice committee recounted the boast by the Prime Minister's Office seeking to question a criminal prosecution of SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. The former attorney general cited a remark by Katie Telford, chief of staff for the Prime Minister at a December 18, 2018 meeting:

'If you are nervous, we would of course line up all kinds of people to write op-eds that what she is doing is proper.'

The names of agreeable journalists on the Liberal list were not disclosed...'This government is ready to hand out half a billion dollars to so-called qualified media outlets, and now we have the Prime Minister's right-hand woman openly bragging about her ability to use these same favoured media outlets for political cover,' said Senator Frum [ and she oughta know!].

Cabinet, in a November 21, Fall Economic Statement proposed a $595 million, five-year bailout of news media with a government-approved 'independent panel of journalists' to determine criteria, take applications and 'define professional journalists and determine eligibility' for aid..."

Yeah, if Wilson-Raybould's testimony is correct, then Wernick's moralizing histrionics last week are rendered all the more laughable.

“I worry about the rising tide of incitements to violence when people use terms like ‘treason’ and ‘traitor’ in open discourse. Those are the words that lead to assassination,” Wernick told the MPs on Thursday.

***

Wernick also expressed dismay about what he called the trolling from the “vomitorium” of social media entering the open media arena.

“Most of all, I worry about people losing faith in the institutions of governance of this country, and that’s why these proceedings are so important,” he said.

so all the bs about QC losing jobs because SNC-Lavalin will move to London is in fact BS.

Post modern expediency meets honesty and integrity. The Libranos interfered with not the political Justice Minister or the non-political Attorney General but with the Director of Public Procecutions.

JWR refused to interfere so now the game is on to slag her. Telford needs to resign for her op-ed propaganda remark and she needs to tale her henchpeoplekind with her. Trudeau is a puppet with his strings cut, hiding in a sandcastle while the tide rolls in.

Democracy deserves better than Trudeau's posing and 'ends justify the means' expediency. He is not just a numptie but an unprincipled loser as well.

Martin N.

Butts will no doubt use smooth language to create camouflage for the essential non-sequitur that distinguishes political expediency from amoral, possibly criminal behaviour. In any case, a government that will grovel to criminal corporate interests has lost the moral authority to govern.

You're mistaken, with respect. Here's the order-in-council. It says nothing remotely similar to what you're saying:

Order-in-Council wrote:

Her Excellency the Governor General in Council, on the recommendation of the Prime Minister, for the purposes of the hearings before the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights and the examination by the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner:

(a) authorizes the Honourable Jody Wilson-Raybould, the former Attorney General, and any persons who directly participated in discussions with her relating to the exercise of her authority under the Director of Public Prosecutions Actrespecting the prosecution of SNC-Lavalin, to disclose to the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights and to the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner any confidences of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada contained in any information or communications that were directly discussed with her respecting the exercise of that authority while she held that office; and

(b) for the purposes of disclosure to the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights and to the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner by the former Attorney General, and any persons who directly participated in discussions with her, waives, to the extent they apply, solicitor-client privilege and any other relevant duty of confidentiality to the Government of Canada in regards to any information or communications in relation to the exercise of the authority of the Attorney General under the Director of Public Prosecutions Act that were directly discussed with the former Attorney General respecting the prosecution of SNC-Lavalin while she held that office.

However, in order to uphold the integrity of any criminal or civil proceedings, this authorization and waiver does not extend to any information or communications between the former Attorney General and the Director of Public Prosecutions concerning SNC-Lavalin.

quizzical wrote:

I know it's difficult, but do try to have conversations here without personally attacking others. Clearly, you're the one who had no clue what the order-in-council said.

quizzical wrote:

I listened very carefully. She never explained, not once, why she resigned when she did - and that is all about her own reasons, absolutely nothing to do with solicitor-client confidentiality, not even cabinet confidentiality.

I simply asked if anyone knew the answer to this question. Why did she stay on in cabinet for months after being treated like shit and being pressured to obstruct justice?

Let me add another question: Why has she not quit the Liberal caucus?

The reason I'm asking these questions is simple: I don't know the answers. If you know, or can hazard a guess, I'd be happy to discuss. But I will certainly not engage babblers who simply name-call. I don't mean you, quizzical.

quizzical

becsuse if she stepped down they won.

and read your own post. she stated she could only talk about her time as AG and that's what the post you made says.

she stated she stayed in cabinet as then she would be in the loop in case they tried to get the new AG to say yes and if she found out they were going to she had predetermined she would go public.

pretty clear to me what transpired and why she stayed and then resigned.

staying in caucus? why not?

Some of SNC-Lavalin’s Crimes; Profiting from war and occupation

SNC-Lavalin and Liberal Party corruption have dominated headlines in the Canadian state for the past month. Here's a visual reminder of previous mobilizing against SNC-Lavalin, who were denounced back in 2005 (while a previous Liberal government was in power) for supplying bullets to the US Military for use in the murderous Iraq war, in addition to various other horrible examples of complicity with the military-industrial complex and Western imperialism....

Why? Because she said out loud what people who pay attention have always known? Did you think, prior to this, that op-eds on political stories were genuine reflections of the national mood by respected and nonpartisan deep thinkers setting out what needs to be done?

Man. I have some bad news for you on Venezuela.

Pondering

SNC-Lavelin did absolutely nothing wrong. It is not a person. It cannot act. Blaming SNC-Lavelin is like blaming a computer. Computers only do what people tell them to do. 8 human criminals, wealthy executives, the ones that actually made the decision to commit bribery. Executives that tried to help Gadafi's son escape, 8 wealthy men who paid bribes, are getting off not because they were found innocent, but because their trials were delayed long enough to set them free of charges because it would be unfair to put them on trial after so long.

If the actual people who committed the crimes are not being punished I don't see why investors who had no control are being punished for what the criminals did.

Please just copy and paste the part you're referring to, which stops her from saying why she decided to resign in February. I see nothing whatsoever like that. I'm not talking about her conversations with the PM or whoever. I'm talking about her own decision to resign. Are you seriously suggesting there's some law or directive that stops her from answering that question?
