Trudeau has been MP for SNC-Lavalin for a very long time but the clock is now ticking on his leadership.

Most cabinet ministers' priorities are to hold onto their jobs with all the respective perks involved,

but there are a lot more backbenchers than there are cabinet ministers.

N.B. cabinet ministers stand by Trudeau, backbenchers not completely sold

THREE BIG MISTAKES TRUDEAU MADE AT HIS #LAVSCAM PRESS CONFERENCE

1. He didn’t apologize. After Trudeau’s office leaked that the beleaguered Liberal leader was deliberating about an apology for the SNC-Lavalin scandal, we all kind of expected one. We didn’t get one. And when Trudeau was asked why, he blinked and stammered and looked offended. Dumb. Apologies cost nothing, Petit Justin. But if done right, they pay many dividends.

2. He didn’t take responsibility. Even if you don’t apologize – even if you don’t express the smallest amount of regret, which Trudeau didn’t do either – it’s important that you accept that the proverbial buck stops with you. Trudeau (again) said that it’s all Jody Wilson-Raybould’s fault. “She didn’t come to me,” he wheezed. Well, actually, she did. You just wouldn’t listen.

3. He didn’t sound sincere. Justin Trudeau’s greatest strength is his acting ability. He is an expert at radiating wet-eyed sincerity and emotion – kind of like our Labrador retrievers, when we come home and discover they’ve eaten an entire living room sofa. At his press conference, Trudeau had all the conviction of an ISIS hostage reading a statement prepared by his captors. This was a truly historic moment, and Trudeau needed to convince us. He didn’t.

Trudeau is obviously on the ropes. The NDP are rebounding. One pollster had them at 20% this week. How long can Trudeau last?

kropotkin1951

The line is getting longer. It appears that Trudeau's critics who said he was a two faced ass grabbing hypocrite might have been on to something. All the women who are unsatisfied with their dealings with him are obviously not listening well enough when him and Butthead have been mansplaining the world of real politics. I imagine some of these women actually got sucked in by Justin's smarmy charm.  I remember watching Vander Zalm work a room and I was amazed at how good he made every everyone feel as he glad handed. Trudeau's feminism always reminded me of Ghomeshi's brand of self proclaimed feminism, before he was exposed that is.

Watch closely as the Liberals voted against having return to speak to the committee. Notice how the Chair rolls his eyes when votes in favour, citing “in the interest of justice.”

The same polling firm (Ipsos Reid) that has had them at 20% or higher in 12 of their last 14 polls.

Wynne proved that an arrogant leader can take their party over the cliff. Trudeau can hang on -- although this may mean that he gives the election to Scheer or even worse a Scheer government held in power by a handful of seats held by Bernier's party.

The Liberals look like they are planning to run on a platform of not being the Conservatives while the Conservatives will run on a platform of not being Liberal. One of the two will take a blank check to the bank.

The NDP, Greens and BQ will fight over the crumbs. One might make a breakthrough but not enough to govern.

JeffWells

Predicting now that this election will set a record for voter disengagement. The Trudeau thrill is gone, and Scheer isn't exactly setting the world on fire. But neither is he an obvious figure of malice, like Harper, who could readily motivate liberally-minded folks to vote against him.

I expect both the Trudeau and Scheer campaigns will be about voting against rather than voting for. If another leader can make the election about voting for something, they could see a breakthrough. Not enough to win but enough to maybe be junior partners in government. IMO, right now, either May or Bernier appear more likely to make that happen than Singh.

Odd how Dion was replaced by Ignatieff. Given he was the leader that shouldn't have been possible.

The only thing that anyone got sucked into was the icm and their circus freek side show centre ring attraction. Charm my fuckin ass, sorry

A cabinet ministers appointment will put a huge smile on any materialistic persons face!

This whole liberal government was a fraud and Justin, making a heart shape with his two hands together, smiling like he actually cared, is nothing more than a loser male model.  He’s no intellect.

There are leaders who will see a pundit saying "He has to resign" and resign, and there are leaders who'll respond with "You can't make me!". Dion was the former (as was Patrick Brown, though he tried to change his mind). Rob Ford was the latter.

If I was thinking in a Machiavellian mindset I would think that the best outcome for the rulers is for Trudeau to resign and for that progressive feminist Freeland to be anointed Queen. Many Canadian left liberals will see her as a way better better than Scheer and Central Canada will give the Liberals at least a minority government. Then the 5 Eyes agencies will have even closer "ties" to the PMO.

That seems an entirely plausible outcome.

I am not so sure. Canadians are not incapable of seeing the courage of JWR. It is possible that in a run she could sign up more people. As much as she would set the NDP back many people might recognize the integrity. This includes some who are loyal to the PM and party now but would take the choice if presented.

There is no way the JWR is going to become leader.  That would involve having the corporate insiders, that she ignored, throw their weight behind her.  Will not happen.

Isnt the point of electing ethical leaders that these leaders neuter the corporate insiders?

How much taxpayer lolly gets siphoned off by bureaucrats and government insiders? How long do Canadians have to be treated like cash cows by airlines, telcos, banks and financial services rip off artists with the support of governments determined not to upset the gravy train.

And finally, how can the corporate insiders hold their power over ethical politicians if there is a majority of ethical members? They can't. The solution is to have the power of the people behind those politicians who have committed themselves to putting country before self. Actions speak louder than self-serving verbal porridge.

One thing that Trudeau at least did was to put Wilson-Raybould in the justice portfolio to start with and would the Conservatives have put an Indigenous woman in that position - I doubt it

This article trivializes the SNC Lavelin scandal.

Much of the article seems to be based on Canadian commentators mouthing the old nationalist cliches about how Canadians aren't corrupt like those sleazy yanks south of the border.

voice of the damned

From the NYT piece...

“People south of the border would be astonished to think that this is the type of scandal that they have in Canada,” said Eddie Goldenberg, a former adviser to former Prime Minister Jean Chretien.

I'd say the NYT writer is somewhat remiss in his duties by not mentioning that the Chretien government was of the same party as Justin Trudeau's. If it were Harper accused of improperly trying to help a multinational corporation escape charges of bribing a foreign government with prostitutes, I doubt Goldenberg would so be so jaunty about it all.

voice of the damned

And this, also from Goldenberg...

“I just don’t really see it as a scandal,” he said. “There is a political correctness here. Nobody wants to go after an indigenous woman minister. It’s become politically incorrect to question the former minister.”

For all the talk about virtuous Canadians, rhetoric about POCs and women being protected from criticism by "political correctness" is straight out of the Fox News playbook.

Misfit Misfit's picture

Exactly!

Very racist and disturbing. I cringed when I read that ‘political correctness’ angle.

Does North Report even read these articles he posts? WTF???

voice of the damned

The really funny thing is, I'm someone who from the beginning has been skeptical that the Liberals' treatment of JWR has been motivated by sexism or misogyny. It seems to me their actions could just as easily be explained by a desire to neutralize a recalcitrant minister for purely political reasons.

But with Sheila Copps, and now Goldenberg, shooting their mouths off, it's almost like they're TRYING to make it about race and gender.

The Liberals are happy to use women and POCs in their Sunny Ways campaign but when they go off the Liberal script then they're introduced to the real Liberal way.

That's quite the statement from Goldenberg
