War in the Golan Heights

BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:30 P.M.) – Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mikdad told the head of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO), Christine Lund, this past week that Syria is prepared for a showdown with Israel over the Golan Heights region.

Mikdad warned Lund that Syria will respond with force if Israel continues to attack the country, as well as if the U.S. recognizes Israel’s sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights.

“Syria will attack Israel if it does not leave the Golan Heights,” Mikdad told Lund, as quoted by World Israel News.

US Duplicity Over Golan Demolishes Posturing Over Crimea

https://www.strategic-culture.org/news/2019/03/19/us-duplicity-over-gola...

"In a controversial snub to international law, the US signaled last week that it is moving to officially recognise the Golan Heights as part of Israeli territory. If the US does so, then it forfeits any moral authority to sanction Russia over allegations of 'annexing Crimea.' The illegality of Israel's occupation of Golan is a matter of record under international law as stipulated in UNSC Resolution 497..."

Trump can recognize all he wants, it’s still illegal under international law.

And Trump’s fascist solidarity is on display again, this time with Netanyahu.

Golan Druze protest Trump pledge to Israel

1

AFP

23 Mar 201921

Golan Heights (AFP) – Druze on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Saturday took to the streets in protest at US President Donald Trump’s pledge to recognise the Jewish state’s sovereignty there.

Trump broke with decades of US Middle East policy, and longstanding international consensus, when he posted a Tweet on Thursday that said it was time to accept Israel’s widely-contested claim to the strategic plateau.

Tens of thousands of Syrians fled or were expelled when Israel seized part of the Golan during the 1967 Six-Day War, subsequently annexing it in 1981.

Some remained, however, and today around 23,000 Druze — an offshoot of Shiite Islam who also live in Lebanon — reside in the Israeli-controlled sector, alongside 25,000 Israeli settlers.

The vast majority of these Druze see themselves as Syrians, refusing to take Israeli nationality.

On Saturday Druze men, women and children rallied in the town of Majdal Shams, adjacent to the armistice line between the Golan’s Israeli and Syrian-controlled sectors.

Lt, Gen. Kochavi leads the second camp which refuses to be taken in again by Hamas’ wiles. He is preparing the IDF for combat in the Gaza sector that could last some days.. During the conference with Netanyahu in his capacity as defense minister, Kochavi issued the order to continue boosting the forces massing on the Gaza border and mobilizing reservists.........

There is acknowlegement that Hizbollah likewise may be preparing at least some limited military response...this all according to Debka

In Canada we may get to chose between Freeland and Scheer, its the same bullshit choices on offer in our dystopian version of democracy.

'Hezbollah warns that the United States could next choose to recognize Israel’s “sovereignty” over the Tel Aviv-occupied West Bank unless the Arab world springs to action.

The Lebanese resistance movement’s Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah issued the caution during a speech on Tuesday.

“When the entire world allows [US President Donald] Trump to declare [Jerusalem] al-Quds as Israel’s eternal capital, and especially the Arab world remains silent, this opens the way for all US violations,” he said.

"When institutions and International laws fail to serve the American agenda and their interest, they just simply disregard it in all disrespect, and what is called 'the international community' is not able to protect any right of the people whatsoever, including land ownership and sovereignty, taking back conquered land like what happened in Golan or what happened before that in (Jerusalem) al-Quds," Nasrallah said.

Trump recognized the holy city, which the Israeli regime occupied as part of the Palestinian territory of the West Bank during a war in 1967, as Israel’s “capital” in late 2017. On Monday, the US president took his second most controversial pro-Israeli action during his tenure by recognizing the regime’s “sovereignty” over Syria’s Golan Heights. Tel Aviv occupied the latter territory during the same war.

“We must expect Trump to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the West Bank,” Nasrallah added.

He said such a potential move “is part of the deal of the century,” referring to an under-wraps Washington proposal for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which reportedly includes outrageous violations against Palestinians’ historical demands.

“They can say the Palestinian people can go and live in Gaza,” the Hezbollah chief said, envisioning expulsion of Palestinians from the West Bank as part of the US plan. .......

Sad but true. Maybe the PR movement could use such an event to effectively show people why electoral reform is required?

Given current polls -- it may be a more complicated choice. The chance of Trudeau stepping down and Freeland winning is perhaps no better than Singh somehow drawing even with Trudeau. It still may be a long shot with Scheer but the choice may not be as binary. A strong BQ and a strong Green party may also create the possibility of a minority.

Thankfully, Canada retains a greater CHANCE of more than two choices than the US. We can also hope that if Trudeau goes someone other than Freeland emerges. I do not think that is a foregone conclusion. It is not clear to me what the chances of this are or who that might be or if they would be much better (my confidence in Liberals does not exist), Freeland is an early favorite but I think there could be an anybody but dynamic emerge and would hope for that. She would be disastrous.

The march to global war...where are the Canadian voices in protest?

Lebanon Decides to Confront Israel and the US in Shebaa, Kfarshouba and Syria

...globalresearch

Lebanese Judge Ahmad Mezher has given orders that a survey be conducted of Lebanese occupied territories in the Shebaa Farms, Kfarshouba, Huneen, Ideise and Bleeda. These villages are bordering Hasbaiya, Rashaya al-Fukhar and Kiyam and have been under Israeli occupation since 1981, as Syria’s Golan Heights have been since 1967. This step coincides with the illegal “gift” of the Syrian Golan Heights offered by US President Donald Trump to his closest ally Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu. Although Trump’s move was verbally condemned by the international community, no other state or international body seems likely to openly oppose Trump’s move at the moment.

However, Lebanon has decided to confront this move on the ground, showing its readiness to defend its territory if US “gifts” were ever seen to include Lebanese occupied territories. The Lebanese presidency, the Parliament and the government agreed that it is the right of Lebanon to regain its occupied territory and that the equation “the army, the people, the resistance” is united under one umbrella. Thus, the possibility of confrontation between the Resistance – i.e. Hezbollah in this case – and Israel is now on the table.

Actually the Canadian government did protest albeit with a bizarre final sentence designed to not irritate Israel.

Still, this is a standout given that Canada has recently avoided disagreements with the US out of apparent fear of the Trump administration. This statement in that context is meaningful.

Of course politically, this is the Canadian government aware that we are in an election year and perhaps worried more about what both sides might do than trying to do the right thing. Still, it is something at least.
