And I am a big fan of the "Anne" reboot of Anne of Green Gables. The actress playing Anne has been superb in the role.

OMG, "River" has got to be one of the most riveting crime suspense dramas with a healthy sprinkle of magic realism that I have seen in a long time.
Yes! And Nicola Walker - wow - I'll watch anything with Nicola Walker. First encountered her in 10 seasons of "Spooks" (which they called MI-5 in the U.S. I think). Then River. Then Last Tango in Halifax. And The Unforgotten. But River - unbelievable, just 6 episodes, but the best!
Over the holidays, we binged watched "Killing Eve" and it totally lived up to the hype.

Okay, guilty pleasure. I've been watching The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up with Marie Kondo. It started as a hate-watch, I'd heard so much fuss about it and decided to have a look, even though I'm definitely not of a minimalist mindset or a particularly dedicated housekeeper.
But. There's something to the approach that really works. It's a subtle shift in mindset that, from friends of Japanese descent telling me it's nothing new, seems to be Japanese culture applied to decluttering. The Shinto idea of things having a sort of life of their own is pretty interesting, that you can have something you're hanging onto for no real reason, being able to "thank" it for its service and let it go is pretty revolutionary for a lot of packrats. Just the act of going through your belongings so that you know what you have with the mindset of understanding what you value is really useful, even if you get rid of very little.
And then the folding method. Fucking brilliant. Did you know you can actually fit more in a drawer with her system?! And you can see what you have! My drawers have never been so functional.
That's just the method, though - the stories are actually pretty good, and the difficulties of people dealing with their situations - because it's never just about the housekeeping - are handled compassionately. One episode was a woman whose husband had died 9 months before and she was dealing with a house full of his belongings - what to keep, what to give away, how to start a new chapter. Really lovely. So if you're inclined to lifestyle tv at all, I recommend it.

Timebandit, I love that you brought up the tradition of hate watch. My husband and I are currently hate watching "New Amsterdam" and having a great time doing so because it is really quite earnest and bad. Keifer Sutherland's "Designated Survivor" was another on our hate watch list and I was gobsmacked to hear that he was in Toronto just recently filming another season. I thought for sure it was cancelled.
..a great big fat WOW! to season 2 of tin star. the ending was a bit anticlimactic from the buildup but still awesome. wow! hoping for season 3.
Lain Lowe - we watched season one of DS and enjoyed it, mostly. Although there were moments when I wondered how dumb they thought their audience was - Hmm, they’re going to North Dakota, I wonder what they’ll find? Surely not a MISSILE SILO!!! They lost us early in season two.
I don’t know if I mentioned - loving the new Doctor in Dr Who. Jodie Whitaker is great. Very diverse cast, too. Lots of fun. And Star Trek Discovery. Strong women characters!
I love Discovery (though I keep calling it "STD" in my head). Burnham hasn't quite clicked for me as a character yet, but the supporting roles (Georgiou, Stamets, Tilly, Saru) are good enough that it doesn't matter. As for Doctor Who, I was having trouble getting into it a couple of years ago when I started watching (the last season with Peter Capaldi), because my brain was trying to file it in the same cabinet it keeps Trek in. One day, though, I made the decision to think of DW like a live-action cartoon, and I've enjoyed it a lot more since. Not that there aren't serious episodes, but a lot of the villains are on the campy side. I enjoyed the episode that spoofed Amazon warehouses, in particular. (What's with only having one episode this year, though? Even by British standards, that's parsimonious.)
I keep checking my PVR, worried that I've missed it. I'm somewhat irritated by the Canadian version, which is typically 5 to 9 minutes shorter than the BBC version. Damn commercials.
I like Burnham a lot. The supporting cast is awesome, too. And, well, Michelle Yeoh. I've been a fan of hers for many years - she's one of the best martial arts genre actresses ever. I was heartbroken when I thought they'd killed her off almost immediately in season one, but I think they've given her so much more to work with by turning her into alt universe Georgiou.
..been watching doc who since the 70's. seen a lot of doctors come and go and i like a woman in that role a lot. there has been better writing though, than in this latest reincarnation.
eta: i especially disliked the rosa parks episode where the white doctor saves the day for rosa.

..i probably posted this 2016 show before but enough time has passed so i'm watching it again. i like a good legal/lawyer drama and this one is really good. it also reminds me of "the verdict" with paul newman. the show has a great cast and has thus far ran 2 seasons with a 3rd on the way.
Amazon’s legal thriller Goliath is decidedly biblical in nature, setting a disgraced, burned-out drunk of a lawyer, Billy McBride (Billy Bob Thornton), against the megalithic firm of his former partner, Donald Cooperman (William Hurt). The former is clearly the David of this story, while the latter is a man who, burned and light-sensitive, is only ever seen in the red glow of his many surveillance feeds like some Lynchian devil. If there’s a parable that creators David E. Kelley and Jonathan Shapiro seem more interested in evoking, however, it’s the story of Job. As McBride puts it to the folks at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, “I just kept redefining what rock bottom was,” and so shit continues to rain down upon him, from a car full of fish guts to a violent traffic stop, creepy stalker, and an outright murder.
This bleak, fast-burning plot feels like it’s taking place worlds away from characters like Brittany (Tania Raymond), a cheery prostitute turned unwilling legal secretary, and Patty Solis-Papagian (Nina Arianda), a glib motormouth who tries to settle cases as if they’re the sunny real estate properties she sells on the side. Even Cooperman McBride’s most predatory lawyers, ruthless Callie (Molly Parker) and all-business Leonard Letts (Damon Gupton), despite being described as “soulless suits,” are depicted as decent people outside of the courtroom, far from capable of the violence that permeates the show (and which is probably being carried out by their weapons-manufacturing client). The heaviness of Goliath’s cheap stunts and shocks likewise never matches the lightness of the dialogue: The show suggests Damages as populated by characters from Kelley and Shapiro’s Boston Legal.

Fleabag is really, really sad
She’s smart, funny and sexually confident – but Fleabag really isn’t ok. This super cool, really awesome, doesn’t-give-a-fuck antiheroine begins to unravel fairly quickly. Her mother is dead, her best friend is dead, her professional life is untethered and sinking, her love-life consists solely of meaningless sex and, to be honest, she’s really, really unhappy. Lots of people are good at making vagina jokes, but what makes Fleabag really quite fantastic is its expertly revealed portrayal of a young woman who is secretly not coping. “Either everyone feels like this a little bit and doesn’t talk about it, or I’m really fucking lonely which isn’t fucking funny.” This is dark humour that sits unnervingly close to home.
Fleabag 'can’t even call herself a Feminist'
For its unabashed female-ness, Fleabag has predictably courted comparisons with Lena Dunham’s excellent Girls, Hollywood hit Bridesmaids and the work of Amy Schumer. Speaking to The Times, Waller-Bridge explains her frustration at the popularity of these shows leading to homogenisation of female-lead comedy by TV executives. She deplores “the easy casualness of people saying ‘oh, that’s under the bracket of women behaving badly’. Most sitcoms in the whole world are about men behaving badly. And yet maybe four over the last five years have shown women, and it’s become like, ‘yeah, that’s been done’…Women can’t be a genre.” Fleabag is far more nuanced than “woman behaving badliness” or a caricatured feminist megaphone. It unpacks the absurd contradictions faced by young women now: is Fleabag is a “bad feminist” because she’d trade five years of life expectancy for a hot body? Rather than shouting its feminist credentials, Fleabag sort of whispers them a bit because it’s not really sure if that’s the right answer.
Just finished watching Russian Doll. Holy crap. Natasha Lyonne is amazing. Life, death, unraveling... Go watch.
We're on episode 5 of The Umbrella Academy, really enjoying that one, too. Managed to get the offspring (18 and 21) to watch with us, but that means it will take longer to get through because it's a challenge to get us all in front of the tv at the same time. :)
I haven't seen the Marie Kondo episodes, but I do fold that way now, and it makes my drawers far more easy to access. I'm a terrible housekeeper; nests of books and papers, you get the idea. She does have useful ideas and I actually have culled quite a few books. I have to cull clothing as well. Not that I have a huge wardrobe, but we all have things we never wear.
My younger daughter was diagnosed with adhd last summer, and her room is reaching hoarder level mess. She insists she knows where everything is, but she regularly loses things. We’re trying some Kondo techniques, but it’s an uphill slog.
I’m not a fussy housekeeper - clean enough to be healthy, messy enough to be happy. But functional is important. So much of the distraction can be helped by not having to remember where every little thing is.

And lo, American Gods is risen, as one of its principal deities might, from a tumultuous cast and production shakeup since its 2017 debut. Showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green exited the series after the first season, and their replacement, Jesse Alexander, was pushed out late last year. To the show’s credit, such behind-the-scenes strife isn’t immediately noticeable, as the season soldiers on with Neil Gaiman’s source material and all of the main characters intact. But it’s perhaps worth keeping that drama in mind when considering how imbalanced the new season seems, having lost some of the visual flair that helpfully contrasted with the material’s most languid, expository moments....
..just finished watching season 2 of secret city. did a bit of binge watching as i couldn't put it down. i enjoyed it immensely. the tension had me on the edge of my seat. the political intrigue included: government manipulation, corporate outsourced war, the us, spying, pakistan and much more. i'm hoping for a another season!

Very soon after the HBO series’s cancellation in 2006, creator David Milch announced that he agreed to produce a pair of two-hour films to tie up the loose ends left after the third season. It’s been a long road since, and after many false starts over the years, production on one standalone film started in fall 2018. And today we have a glorious teaser for the film, which releases on HBO on May 31. Below is the official description of the film:

I checked out the new Jan Arden sitcom on CTV. It was quite humorous - I think I will give it a go (Feist cameo was very OTP but fun).
In terms of Canadian sitcoms, CBC is featuring some stellar ones with "Working Moms" and "Little Dog" being my two favourites.
