The Ford government is spending "seven figures" on it's anti-carbon tax media campaign, including TV ads, radio commercials and social media posts.

This doesn't include the taxpayer funded stickers that gas stations will be forced to put on gas pumps. Any individual gas station that refuses to comply, is subject to a ten-thousand dollar a day fine, until they put up the sticker.

The millions being spent, which the government is staying quiet on, doesn't cover the court challenge. The message of these ads are clear, only electing an Andrew Scheer government will kill the carbon tax once and for all.

The telegraphed "elect Andrew Scheer" campaign is 100% paid by Ontario taxpayers.

My own conversations with people here indicate many are frightened of the CONS winning and will 'hold their nose' and vote Liberal in large numbers as the only way to defeat such an eventuality.

It's true that people resent taxes but they will be getting those rebate cheques and people understand that something must be done to reduce the use of fossil fuels. Even oil industry executives support the carbon tax. I think most people support the carbon tax like they support having a tooth pulled. They don't really like it but it has to be done.

I think certain conservatives have been seduced by the Trumpian approach. It will work with some Canadians but it will alienate more.

Most Canadians are aware and ashamed of our reputation as climate laggards. We are reading/hearing endless horror stories from more severe deadly storms, floods, droughts, fires, invasive species coming north, islands going under water, coastlines threatened and requiring mega-projects almost beyond imagination in size to protect land.

It's only a debate in the minds of the deluded, like flat earthers. So yeah, nobody likes a carbon tax, but most reasonable people understand that we need one. The courts will support the right of the federal government to levy a fuel tax connected to carbon reduction.

Since this is only your second post it is unclear if this is meant to be sarcastic. Usually we are able to interpret comments as sarcasm based on what we know about the person. So far we have a comment about the irony of a statue to vulcan in Notre Dame Cathedral and this -- not much to go on.

Because...oh, I don't know...because we HAVE to address climate change and the ways human activity works TO protect the wildlife, the rivers, and the air we breathe? Because there's no way to protect those things without addressing what we're doing to the climate? Because most of us would rather see life on this planet continue?

Ford just introduced a Bill that allows people with money to pay to avoid environmental regulation.

This might compromise his carbaon tax campaign as it shows just how extreme he is.

Do note that the Constitution states that federal powers include "The raising of Money by any Mode or System of Taxation.". That's as explicit a grant of power as you are going to see. The only express restriction is that "No Lands or Property belonging to Canada or any Province shall be liable to Taxation." Indigenous people also face protection from taxation insofar it would infringe their treaty rights.

The provincial politicians opposing that tax, and their lawyers, know they don't have a case. It's just a political stunt.
