Winnipeg's Stephen Fletcher, after bouncing back from federal to political to federal politics, is running for Maxime's party. He was part of a fledgling right Libetarian type party in Manitoba after he was ousted from the provincial PC caucus. I've never had a clear read on this man.
Is that because Stephen Fletcher was denied the federal Conservative nomination to run for his old seat?
Renata Ford (Rob Ford's widow) will be running for Maxime Bernier's People's Party in Etobicoke North.
Could take votes away from the Conservatives? A way to get back at Doug for the fight they're having over Rob's estate?

It's a safe Liberal seat-the PC's took it once, in the '84 Mulroney landslide, but lost it in '88 and no party other than the Liberals has come anywhere close to taking it since-here's the Wikipedia entry on the riding for the numbers:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etobicoke_North
So she isn't going to cost them a chance of winning the seat, but COULD knock the official Con candidate into third or possibly fourth place.
Renata Ford might raise the profile of the People's Party by providing a connection to Ford Nation, somewhat limited in her case, but it might draw a few extremist right-wing populists towards the People's Party, which, of course, is not making Scheer and establishment Cons happy at the prospect since the less seen of the People's Party, the better it is for them electorally. It could also introduce further strains with Doug Ford, as there are already establishment types within the Ontario PCs who are not happy with the loss of popularity brought on by the Ford regime.

Of course Renata and her brother in law are not on the best of terms right now otherwise I am sure Doug would have tried to dissuade her from this course of action.

I'm worried that we're going to have a bad surprise in the next election. Bernier's party (apart from Nanos polling) is at a consistent 2-4%. I still think they'll place 5th nationally, but could also see them picking up some seats and shocking the political establishment (especially in deep blue ridings where there is no risk of vote splitting on the conservative side and anti choice people throw a protest vote Bernier's way), thankfully that will come at the expense of the Conservatives.
A lot of talk about Bernier's (hissy fit) Party and mark my words here in 2019. If that fucking asshole and his Randist horde ever get power , say good bye to Canada. That's not hyperbolic, I'm very afraid to say so.

I second this remark. Bernier seems like kind of a joke right now but look at Trump. Look at Nigel Farage's party topping the polls in the recent UK European elections. Bolsonaro. Salvini. The new right rising across much of Europe. Bernier knows exactly what he is doing and if he catches the wave he could ride it over all of us.

Fortunately he can be very easliy beaten with one question. That question is, "if you're such a staunch anti-globalist, why did you support trade deals like the TPP?"
It's interesting that Bernier has now managed to recruit several former Conservative MPs to run for the PPC. But what is he up to? These 3 ridings, for example, are all currently held by Liberal MPs. By running these former Conservative MPs, is Bernier trying to split the right-wing vote?
Pickering—Uxbridge, Ontario (Corneliu Chisu)
Charleswood—St. James—Assiniboia—Headingley, Manitoba (Steven Fletcher)
Cloverdale—Langley City, British Columbia (Gurmant Grewal)

I'm not sure what impact, if any, Fletcher's running will have on the race in Charleswood. I see the Conservative banners in that area all the time, and the Conservative candiate always hits on the important PPC talking points on things like illegal immigration and the carbon tax.
I think Fletcher is more likely to have an impact on the vote in Charleswood because he was a long-term Conservative MP & Harper cabinet minister, plus is a current MLA. He has a pre-existing base of support and can take several points away from the Conservatives.
By contrast, Chisu in Pickering was only a one-term MP, so he probably won't take many votes from the Cons. And in B.C., Grewal is running in Cloverdale, which I think is a different area than he represented when he was in Parliament before.

The Liberal's winning this riding was an anomoly that will not be repeated. This is a very savvy move. Watch SOGI 123 become an issue.
Grewal's riding was Surrey Central and his wifes riding of Fleetwood included some of the areas that are in Cloverdale Langley City. He was a Reform MP before he was a Conservative. The numbers show that depending on who the Conservatives run this riding could be one to watch. The Wikki link has the redistributed result numbers from 2011 show the Liberals only got 11% and the COns got nearly 57%.

Yes, although 2011 was the worst election for the Federal Liberals in history, so that vote share was unusually low.
What's all this talk about Conservatives?
Maxime Bernier who is NOT a Consertvative but a RANDIST (libertarian) and a psychopath mixed in with racism and stoking the flames of hate. A faux populist like Trump,Farage and Le Pen.
In my view, Bernier needs to be neutralized. He's more dangerous than the sickening Stephen Harper and that's saying a lot.

The reason we were talking about the Conservatives is because we were wondering if Bernier's decision to run several former Conservative MPs for the PPC will end up hurting the Conservative candidates in those ridings.
Rand was a migrant herself. It seems odd to be for the market and "small government" and against free immigration, though Rand herself was often hypocritical and contradictory.
I remember Bernier's anti-migrant comments, but what precisely racist statements has he made? (Don't doubt you in the least about that).
I read somewhere that Rand spent her final years in City housing and collecting Social Security. She was not only a selfish piece of shit but she turned out to be a flaming hypocrite.
Usually those who follow Rand are in high school and college and as soon as they are finished (become informed and human) they chuck her books into a bin with their posters of Menudo and mixed cassette tapes collecting dust in an attic.. In other words, they grow up. Randists and Reaganists are as intelligent as a dull 16 year old with an 8 year old temprement..
Bernier is a proud selfish prick, a Rand fanatic. I can only hope that Canadians are not as selfish and indifferent as our neighbours to the South. Well..maybe Alberta but in the grand scheme of things Alberta doesn't mean anything.
He has recruited former Reform MP's who switched to Conservatives when Harper took them over. The Reform was Randian to the core with Preston as its guru. It destroyed Mulroney's Conservatives but not in the first election they won seats in.

Is the "white power hand gesture" referred to in this article the "OK sign" the dude in lower left corner is making?
ETA -- should have followed the link in the article. It is.
The PPC has moved up a little in the polls lately, so who knows what's behind it?
Maxime Bernier sounds more unhinged than usual this morning -- almost like Donald Trump:

I have no lesson to receive from the government that has done more than any other to divide Canadians and undermine the fabric of our society.
YOU LIBERALS ARE THE HATERS.
You hate Canada, its people, history and identity.
You’re trying to destroy it.
We will stop you.

Maxime Bernier sounds more unhinged than usual this morning -- almost like Donald Trump:
Quite so. I hope this sort of thing doesn't get any traction in Canada, but I'm afraid there may be as much as 15% of the population who actually agree with this nonsense. And of course the Liberals don't make it any easier to refute these claims by being such a dishonest bunch of corporate lackeys. The fact that Bernier would be an even more egregious lackey is no help with this problem.
Apparently he concluded that libertarian/Randian economics wouldn't cut it. So he's going with jingoism and nativism.

Bernier is not the fault of the Liberals. The 'People's Party' exists because there is still a far-right element in this country that thinks the Conservative Party is not right-wing enough.
Bernier is also angry & bitter that he narrowly lost the Conservative leadership to Scheer on the 13th ballot (and he's correct that the way that was done was suspicious).

I think you misunderstood the point I was making. It was not that the Liberals are responsible for Bernier, but rather that the obvious corruption of the Liberal government makes it harder for any of us non-jingoists to refute his ill-founded arguments. Sadly, there are plenty of valid reasons to condemn the Trudeau government as caring more about the economic elites than the voters who put them in office. This makes it easier for charlatans like Bernier to fool people.
True. I keep thinking of Trudeau's riding (Papineau) just north of mine. Lots of very serious poverty - and racism, in Parc-Ex and St-Michel. While people in Villeray are confronted with very serious gentrification. Trudeau appeals via "costume party" multiculturalism. And I heard that term from racialised or "ethnicised" Papineau residents, not white people who hate diversity. Bernier and Scheer get very few votes in Papineau.

What a fucking asshole. We don`t need this shit in Canada, But by all means keep splitting that Conservative vote,Maxi. lol...prick..
Bernier announced controversial right-wing Professor Salim Mansur as their candidate in London North Centre today.
The Conservatives blocked Mansur from getting the CPC nomination last month.
Since that article has little information on Mansur, here is his wiki page...
Controversial billboard for Maxime Bernier/People's Party appears in Halfax today:
Perhaps he thinks that a divisive billboard like this will get his support to rise. He has spoken out against immigration before so this really should not come as a surprise. He likely will try to sugar coat the racism that is implicit behind his message.
God help us this lunatic never.ever becomes PM. Wait....Scheer's our next PM in October ? Welcome back to the 'black and white' generation
Nathan Cullen:
Crass, fear-mongering politics must be rejected in Canada.
Racist spam hoping to confuse us about the real challenges are to a more equitable country - there is no ‘mass immigration’ & the work of generations of newcomers is a source of pride, not fear.
