Considering how low public support for the NDP is relative to the Greens in New Brunswick, it wouldn't be a surprise that the NDP is behind on that front. To not have any? Is there a precedent? I think the NDP even had close to a full slate in 1993.

Singh says NDP wouldn't prop up Scheer minority government due to 'disgusting' gay marriage speech

NDP leader says he can't trust Andrew Scheer 'to champion the fundamental rights of Canadians'

May previously has said she is open to propping up a minority Con government.

I'm happy Singh made that statement. That certainly earned my respect.

Two former MPs say Jagmeet Singh is sending ‘wrong message’ by ruling out support for Tory minority

“You don’t campaign to finish third,” Françoise Boivin said. “You present yourself as the future leader with the best platform.”

She said Mr. Singh’s frankness on the subject will make it more difficult to motivate volunteers and campaign staff to pound the pavement during the election. Her former colleague Peter Stoffer added that it will also put more roadblocks in front of the candidates running under the NDP banner.

“In a way, it’s a concession," Mr. Stoffer said. “When you’re on the door step and people ask, ‘What can you do for us,’ if you can’t be in government, then your party platform doesn’t mean very much.”

He also warned that if voters don’t give any party a majority mandate, the NDP will hold less leverage in the subsequent talks. “In a poker game, you don’t show your hand at the beginning,” Mr. Stoffer said.

That lesson wasn’t lost on the NDP’s late leader, Jack Layton, according to Liberal strategist Scott Reid.

When Canada had three minority governments in the early 2000s, Mr. Layton “held everybody’s feet to the fire,” said Mr. Reid, who worked in Liberal prime minister Paul Martin’s government. “If you are not an unpredictable partner, then you have no leverage.”

Mr. Singh’s statement has support from his current caucus. NDP MP Charlie Angus said his party is being straight with the electorate and saying: "We have a bottom line of what we will and won’t support.”

His colleague Nathan Cullen, who isn’t seeking re-election, echoed Mr. Angus - with both saying it wasn’t a concession.

Boivin and Stoffer are absolutely correct. Singh has clearly ruled out working with the Conservatives, so that leaves only the Liberals he says he can work with. If that's going to be the case, why even run as a separate party? Why not just run under the Liberal banner?

When running as a third party, you never name names. The message that gains traction for you is to say, "people are tired of the main parties who run the show, they are looking for something new, here are the policy items we want to see action on." Notice the difference? In this case, the policy becomes the focus, and that puts pressure on the larger parties to negotiate. You don't openly pick favourites going into the campaign. Take a look at the Greens in BC. They said voters were looking for something different, and were very clear about where their line in the sand was. Suddenly the other parties had to either bend (the NDP) or become irrelevant (the Liberals). It might be obvious which party you could never support based on the lines in the sand you draw, but even then you are still carving out your own identity.

Think of this scenario. Singh has already clearly stated that he won't work with the Conservatives. So in a minority situation, he attempts to approach the Liberals, and the Liberals essentially say they won't bend to the NDP at all. What's the NDP to do? Abstain and look like cowards? Vote with the Liberals and lose the support of their base? Vote to take down the Liberal government and bear the brunt of voters angry with a snap election call so soon after we just had one? That scenario would also risk a Conservative majority, as they would have a clear case to campaign on the need for stability.

Let’s make a mountain out of a mile hill. No, it wasn’t the swiftest move and yes you avoid the answer and offer yourself as a solid alternative to the other two parties but to make this a catastrophic  event is carrying things a bit too far.

I like the statement, it makes a clear stand and creates a distinction between the Green party that seems open to sacrificing all their principles for power.

The whole idea that now people are going to not vote NDP because "they conceded" that they won't win (which he actually didn't do) isn't how people think. All a left wing person who sees that will say is "damn right". That is a statement of strength and I love it. No calculating, no equivocating. Just saying "no I won't support them". Love it.

Also the argument that now the NDP are forced to support the Liberals is also nonsense, they can choose to support no one and vote on an issue by issue basis.

Pondering

I agree with Pietro. People would rather see some integrity. The Greens have said they will work with a Conservative government and we already know the Liberals will.

What does the NDP do on a confidence motion like a Throne Speech or a budget and the Liberals make it clear that they have no intention of compromising for anyone?

Sit on their hands would be one option or defeating the government would be the other. Both can be both good or bad for the party depending on the circumstances.

The Liberals and the NDP have their issues with each other, but they have worked with each other several times in the past.

 - The Pearson-Douglas arrangement of the early 1960's

- The Trudeau-Lewis arrangement of the early 1970's

- The Martin-Layton arrangement of 2004-2005.

The NDP also worked with the Conservatives to gain an extension of EI benefits in 2009, in the Nova Scotia legislature during the minority periods 2003-2009, and Harper also credited Jack Layton for forcing his hand when his government apologized for the treatment of First Nations.

Pondering

So what? He didn't say the NDP never worked with the Conservatives. The NDP won't get anywhere as Liberal lite anymore. The Conservatives are a dinosaur party and this is a new age.

The most despicable piece of voting for what you don't believe in was Jack whipping the Tackling Violent Crime Act (Bill C-2). It cost the party one of its finest MP's and was then overturned by the SCC for breaching the Charter.  I haven't worked or donated to the NDP since that time. If the Conservatives or Liberals put forward good legislation then it should be passed but if it isn't good then the NDP opposition needs to move amendments that make it clear how it would be governing.

Is that not the bill where Bill Siksay (NDP) was the only person to vote against it? Bill impressed me so much that I donated directly to his campaign and bypassed the general NDP fundraising machine. I was so pissed off with the party at the time but not Bill.

Yes that was the Bill that led to Siksay not running again. After that the insiders pulled the same shit on the newcomers from Quebec and gagged all the progressive voices and gave us the balance the books mantra before any real change happens. I will vote for the NDP again this time because I live in a riding with an excellent NDP MP. I have always voted for the MP not the party although the MP's I like have run for the NDP.

Bill wasn't anywhere near my riding at the time, Winnipeg Centre, but I so admired the man that it didn't matter. That was where I would put my donation. And he was the most gracious candidate I ever donated to. He sent a lovely Christmas/Season's Greetings card thanking me for my support. Best political donation ever.

Bill and his partner Brian are very special people. They both are religious men who fought hard for equality in their respective denominations, Brian married me and my wife. Bill ran Svend's Burnaby office for years prior to the ring incident. I was on the executive at the time and as soon as we knew some of us started the campaign to make sure Bill became the MP.  He was loved by all the community groups he dealt with and was a big part of Svend's successful team. My most cherished political memory is that in his last speech to the House I was one of a handful of people he thanked personally.

Why Singh says he won’t work with the Tories, and May says she will

Veteran New Democrat To Chair Canada's New Intelligence 'Watch Dog' Agency

https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2019/08/28/ran-a28.html

"Canada's Liberal government has appointed retiring BC NDP MP Murray Rankin as chairman of a new 'oversight' committee for the country's spy agencies. Rankin's appointment underscores that the ostensibly 'left' NDP is seen by the ruling elite as a tried and trusted defender of Canadian imperialism...

Whilst Elizabeth May and her Green Party voted in favor of Bill C-59, the New Democrats officially opposed it, citing criticisms made by civil liberties and privacy groups. The NDP even went so far as to describe parts of the legislation, including CSIS 'disruption' powers as unconstitutional. The hypocritical character of this 'opposition' is now clear for all to see, with Rankin, a senior member of the NDP caucas, accepting a post that will seem him provide a pseudo-democratic fig-leaf for the activities of CSIS and Canada's other spy agencies. NDP leader Jagmeet Singh, for his part, welcomed Rankin's appointment, saying 'Canada's NDP caucus has the utmost confidence in Murray Rankin' and is 'pleased that an aspect of our nation's security will be in his capable hands..."

More on Rankin and his strong pro-Israel, anti-Palestinian chops etc:

Engler: Good Riddance to NDP MP Who is Pro-Israel, Pro-US Empire

"Since taking his place in Parliament seven years ago, Rankin has been a leading anti-Palestinian activist in the NDP..."

If Rankin had a history of advancing the interests of China or Russia in the way he seems to have advanced the interests of Israel, would we not be alarmed to see him take up such a sensitive national security 'oversight' position?

14 N.B. New Democrats jumping ship to join Greens

Fourteen disgruntled former New Brunswick NDP candidates are defecting and throwing their support behind the provincial and federal Greens — a move unlikely to spark confidence in the federal New Democrats on the cusp of an election call.

The 14 former provincial candidates announced their exodus in a media release sent to CBC News today. They also are expected to hold a press conference in Moncton this afternoon to submit their membership applications to New Brunswick Green Party Leader David Coon.

In their declaration of support, the members note that federal Green Party Leader Elizabeth May has visited New Brunswick, while NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh hasn't set foot in the province since winning the leadership back in 2017.

Says a lot about the NDP MPs if they could join the Green Party. It seems the official NDP is far more right wing than suspected by me anyway.

I'm getting more leftist by the minute.

A few of you have been calling it for a few years. The NDP has gone far too right wing. I'm annoyed that the Liberals keep getting called left of centre when they are nothing of the sort. The new definition for left seems to be socially progressive. I am not anti capitalist but I am anti unfettered capitalism and there seems to be no opposition to it.

These MPs are making an excuse to quit. They don't support the NDP platform.

If Singh hasn't visited New Brunswick in the 2 years since he was elected leader I can see why that would tick off NDP members in NB.

Although I'm not sure why they think joining the Greens will help the situation.

This is the provincial wing of the NDP that for two decades has been reeling from one inadequate leader to another, since Weir's high point of being the only NDP MLA these people have done nothing electoral including getting any of themselves elected to anything. The NDP in New Brunswick has never really been an electoral force now the last of its losers who polled 5% in 2018 are joining the Green's on mass. It says a lot about the NB NDP and nothing else IMO.

Federally Yvon Godin like most NDP MP's was elected and re-elected because of who he was not because of some magic leaders coat tails. If anyone thinks that any leader or strategy could change the electoral outcome in NB for the NDP, they are dreaming in technicolour.
