Hong Kong Rioters Wage Sabotage Campaign To Press Congress into Punishing China

https://t.co/5IK4aoqtyA

"...To claim that the US is not involved in the events in Hong Kong is nonsense. It is obviously not by chance that the US sponsored HK rabble rouser Joshua Wong gets published in the NYT with a call for the US Congress to act against China. The Trump administration strategy towards the new super-villain China is a general decoupling between the 'West' and China. The violent protests in HK are obviously one instrument it applies to achieve that. The Trump administration and the rioters hope that the Chinese military intervenes and creates another Tianamen situation. Beijing is not going to fall for the same trick twice..."

Good point. But there’s no big crackdown on the violence that we see in salted protests of the west.

As far as I’m aware, it’s actually the opposite.

It was a sardonic reference to Richard Nixon's use of the same term.

https://tinyurl.com/y3v2dxmu

Nixon used it to mean that middle-class people who seemed uninvolved actually agreed with him and were against left-wing protestors. That sort of general sentiment is often accompanied by rhetoric along the lines of "These punk kids are only rioting because they're out of school and have nothing better to do", also seen in the citation from NDPP's Hong Kong friend.

My point was that pro-government and anti-protest statements out of China often seem oddly similar to right-wing commentary in the west. Same with people who defend Beijing's treatment of Muslim minorities, "You can't expect the Chinese to just lie down and tolerate jihad from religious terrorists!!"

Western 'Progressives' Support Yet Another Color Revolution in Hong Kong

https://dissidentvoice.org/2019/09/western-progressives-support-yet-anot...

You know it's not a real color revolution until the stupid section of the western 'progressive' blogosphere gets to cheerleading...This is a geostrategic, geopolitical information warfare. Dominic Barton

"Dominic Barton (born 1962) is a Uganda-born Canadian management consultant* and business executive. He was the Managing Director of McKinsey and Company from 2009 to 2018. He is the Canadian Ambassador to China since September 5, 2019."

* 'McKinsey and Company is an American worldwide management consulting firm'  - Wikipedia-

His 'American worldwide management consulting' experience makes him an ideal Canadian ambassador. Davos guy too. Perfect.

swallow swallow's picture

Interesting choice.

Freeland said Barton's close personal connections to Trudeau and herself means he will have "close and direct contacts" that will help him do the job.

She said his appointment sends "an important message to China" about how much Canada values its relationship with China.

Conservative foreign affairs critic Erin O'Toole released a statement today criticizing the appointment, saying the situation with China calls for an experienced diplomat in the role of ambassador, not a "corporate executive advocating for doing business with China as usual."

"He is replacing one Liberal insider with another Liberal insider at a time that we should have a professional diplomat who is conversant with the language, culture and protocols needed to secure the swift release of Canadian citizens and stabilization of export trade," he said.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/china-ambassador-dominic-barton-1.5269770

Here's a first, I agree with Erin O'Toole.

NDPP

As for Freeland's assesment that the appointment 'sends an important message to China about how much Canada values its relationship with China' that's certainly true. Just not in the way she intends it be taken. The foreign minister's political 'wet-work' for the empire on Meng Wanzhou, trashing trade and joining the Trump/Bolton/Pompeo anti-China offensive speaks far more clearly.

laine lowe laine lowe's picture

McKinsey and Company practically had a monopoloy on all World Bank and USAID contracts going back in the 1990s-2000s. Haven't kept track of them in over 15 years. Sounds just like the type of crowd Freeland would run with. I swear she is an ideological clone of Ignatieff and seems to share the same circle of friends.

NDPP

Interesting. Didn't know about McKinsey/USAID etc. That could have been around the same time that Larry Summers was at the World Bank, where he famously commented in a leaked memo on the 'impeccable economic logic' of exporting toxic waste to 'the third world' Summers is also famous as the man who broke Glass Steagal for Bill Clinton ushering in the present day bankster apocalypse of unregulated speculation. Most recently his name came up in the Epstein matters too. He is effusively referred to by Chrystia Freeland as 'my economic guru'. She in turn introduced him to Justin who has apparently now also fallen under the spell of this high priced hustler.

Could be NDPP. All I know is that there was a cadre of go to firms (management, engineering) that got most of the international development contracts.

Yes they will get the same kind of freedom and peace as the Ukrainians have after their colour revolution. The Egyptians are also into a blissful period of freedom. The Libyans have never had it so good. So far it is clear that US led colour revolutions are the best thing to happen to the oligarchs of those countries, not so much your average Joe.

Absolutely. NED and OSF (George Soros) certainly look good on paper but they are based on a profound hatred for communism and socialism. Free speech and independent media are often their biggest rallying call - or entry into campaigns - to disrupt what are deemed as authoritarian regimes by western capitalists.

Pro-Hong Kong Rally in DC Against 'CHINAZI Regime' Being Sponsored With US Govt-Linked Money

"A planned Washington DC protest in support of Hong Kong activists and promoting the 'Chinazi' flag is being sponsored by at least six organizations backed by the notoriously shady US funded National Endowment For Democracy (NED). Protesters plan to form a human chain encircling the Chinese embassy in Washington DC to protest the 'Chinazi regime' and call for an independent Hong Kong. HK Protests: Fading Foreign Tantrum, Not Genuine Revolution

It is being done for Washington and is just one small part of a much wider, global slash and burn foreign policy..."

Sean in Ottawa

One things these protest have shown is the power of direct advocacy outside political parties. Likewise with Thumberg.

In both cases governments are not ignoring and not wanting to supress too strongly due to the reactions. In other words protests are influencing governments to manage them as much as possible. Canadians should protest more.

I hope that things do not deteriorate to further bloodshed in Hong Kong (or where there are environmental protests).

A point that some can make is that engagement with China has changed the way protest is handled. It is clear the protests are provocative, disruptive and serious yet the government has showed restraint. Some will argue that the impact of engagement and global economic exposure is part of that restraint shown in 2019 that is greater than that shown in 1989. The argument that engagement does indeed moderate peacefully can be made.

Canada should listen to this. The embassy in Iran for example should be opened. Canada has serious issues with Iran and needs the embassy. There are points of disagreement to be sure on both sides. There is a large diaspora here wanting consular services. Canada has a poor record dealing with money laundering here and there is a great deal of Iranian assets flowing here illegally depriving that country. Canada should try play a role trying to moderate the US over Iran. Canada also states that it has interests in supporting people who need aid and Iran is seeing considerable natural disaster in terms of heat, flood and earthquakes.

This Chinese example of the effects of engagement is positive as is the proof that people acting together can stand up to governments. I live in Ontario and terrible things are happening that people can stand up against.

kropotkin1951

The Hong Kong protests have two faces. There have been large marches that resemble peace or environmental rallies in Canadian cities like Vancouver and Montreal where tens of thousands take to the street and march peacefully without many armored police present mostly cops in regular uniform. However in Hong Kong there are also the agents of chaos trained and led by US and UK spy agencies. These deluded young people believe that their situation is worse than say Puerto Rico or Haiti. One is a direct territory of the US and the other is a country where the US has gone in to take over from the government they said was a failure and both have less democracy than present day Hong Kong.

I feel sorry for them because they have drank the koolaid and although the Hong Kong authorities have been measured in their response many of these young people are going to be arrested for violent crimes and they will get sentenced to real jail time for being pawns in a global chess game.
