Trudeau Brownface

Apparently there is a story in Time magazine

Ken Burch

(on edit) Here's an actual link which seems to support the allegation:

If this is true, people need to back off on their absurd criticisms of  Jagmeet Singh as he may be our only hope now to stop the Conservatives

Pondering

Wow....,.

https://time.com/5680759/justin-trudeau-brownface-photo/

The photograph has not been previously reported. The picture was taken at an “Arabian Nights”-themed gala. It shows Trudeau, then the 29-year-old son of the late former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, wearing a turban and robes with his face, neck and hands completely darkened. The photograph appears in the 2000-2001 yearbook of West Point Grey Academy, a private day school where Trudeau was a teacher.

This is from the same period in his life that he was grabbing ass at public events. He is an elitist pig and always has been. Once the mask comes off he may be in trouble with people who believed his lies about being a feminist.

NorthReport

Trudeau was the candidate of change.

This is Trudeau's brand, his image!

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wore brownface to a party in 2001

Here's the cbc article.

https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/canada/trudeau-appeared-in-brownface-and-...

"I can confirm it is him," said Liberal spokesman Cameron Ahmed in an email to CBC News. "It was a photo taken in 2001 while he was teaching in Vancouver, at the school's annual dinner, which had a costume theme of Arabian Nights.

"He attended with friends and colleagues dressed as a character from Aladdin."

Jag is all over this!

Justin is a racist asshole! He's no feminist! He only uses the LGBTQ community to promote himself and probably has had some thoughts there that he wouldn't want to share (based upon his behaviour)

He's only a one trick pony, legalization.

I called out this fuckin clown soon after a woman alleged he groped her. I took the victim's side back then and took some flack here on babble for doing that.

Told you so babblers!

WWWTT

I guess Justin and Trump are a lot more similar now hey?

NorthReport

Trudeau is a drama teacher and a very good actor.

The best things that Canadians can do now is to support Jagmeet Singh and the NDP, a person of colour, to show that Canada is not a racist society led by a racist prime minister.

NorthReport

Does Trudeau still have any coattails left for his fellow candidates or should he resign immediately?

kropotkin1951

Just wait for the tears. I posted the groping allegation above because if those are students in the picture he has his hands on the girls bosom with his finger almost resting on her breast and the other around her waist. WTF

NorthReport

Hopefully this does not lead to a Conservative government.

WWWTT

I'm sure Jag is going to give Justin a flurry of heat durring the debates on this one.

I give 50/50 odds that Justin will now skip out on any debate appearances to avoid admiting he's a racist.

Also, he's an idiot. He should stick to modeling/acting. Teaching is obviously way out of his league. I can't believe this guy was prime minister of Canada! Canadian voters are stupid and believe anything the imperialist corporate media tells them!

Yeah, it seems like someone is digging up dirt on Trudeau from way back.

How does dressing up as an Aladdin character once back in his college days mean Trudeau is a racist?

It's politically-incorrect and culturally insensitive in today's times, but some of the reactions above are way overblown.

And the NDP is not in a position to beat the Conservatives and most progressive voters know that.

Photo of Justin Trudeau wearing 'blackface' at Vancouver party surfaces

A photo has been released by TIME showing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at a “Arabian Nights” themed party wearing blackface makeup with his black-painted hand on a woman’s chest.

The picture was taken in the spring of 2001 at a private party held at Vancouver’s prestigious West Point Grey Academy and released to TIME by a parent at the school. At the time Trudeau was a 29-year-old teacher at the school. The photo was published in the school’s 2000-2001 yearbook called The View.

This screengrab shows a Time Magazine article about a 2001 party at Vancouver’s West Point Grey Academy that was attended by now Prime Minister Justin Trudeau dressed in costume with his face and hands painted a dark colour.

This screengrab shows a Time Magazine article about a 2001 party at Vancouver’s West Point Grey Academy that was attended by now Prime Minister Justin Trudeau dressed in costume with his face and hands painted a dark colour.

According to the TIME article, the party was attended by school faculty, administrators and parents.

Liberal spokesman Cameron Ahmad confirmed the photo is of Trudeau, who is on a plane at the moment.

“It was a photo taken in 2001 while he was teaching in Vancouver, at a school’s annual dinner which had a costume theme of “Arabian Nights”,” Ahmad said. “He attended with friends and colleagues dressed as a character from Aladdin.

Trudeau told media that were with him on a flight from Halifax that he should have known better, but he didn’t.

“Obviously I regret that I did it and I’m really sorry I did,” Trudeau said.

He said that when he was in high school he dressed up in black makeup at a school performance.

“It’s something that I didn’t realize was racist at the time, but know I recognize it was something racist to do and I regret.”

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, who was taking part in a town hall meeting when the news broke, said it’s becoming clear that Trudeau’s public persona may not be an accurate reflection of who he is.

“I think he needs to answer for it. I think he’s got to answer the question why he did that and what does that say about what he thinks about people who, because of who they are, because of the colour of their skin, face challenges and barriers and obstacles in their life,” Singh said.

“Who is the real Mr. Trudeau? Is it the one behind closed doors, the one when the cameras are turned off that no one sees?” Singh asked. “Is that the real Mr. Trudeau? Because more and more, it seems like it is.”

The National Council of Canadian Muslims wasted little time calling on Trudeau to explain the “deeply saddening” photo.

“The wearing of blackface/brownface is reprehensible, and hearkens back to a history of racism, slavery, and an Orientalist mythology that is unacceptable,” said executive director Mustafa Farooq.

“While we recognize that people can change and evolve over two decades, it is critical that the prime minister immediately and unequivocally apologize.”

Calls to the West Point Grey Academy have not been returned.

I couldn't help but laugh when I saw this. Considering how unbearably pious he's been lately about people in other parties posting dumb things online years ago (or that - gasp! - Andrew Scheer opposed gay marriage 14 years ago) this couldn't have come out at a worse time for him.

Unless he's planning to step down himself, he - and, by extension, the Liberal Party - has lost all right to demand the head of any NDP, Tory or Green candidate who has an old Facebook post, blog entry or suchlike dredged up about them.

Let the sanctimonious fellow squirm over this; I will thoroughly enjoy it.

NorthReport

What's pitiful, but to be expected, is to see the CBC and the Toronto Star rush to Trudeau's defence. Just imagine how they would have treated this if it were any of the other political party leaders. and the comments from the Liberal posters here say it all. Just sickening.

Ken Burch

So...does this end Justin, or does he just stay on and lead his party through the election as though nothing happened?

NorthReport

What you are saying josh is that the Liberals will pull off another one of their capers here, and I suppose you think that is cool, eh!

josh wrote:

NorthReport

So how did this story come out now, and not in 2015?

Maybe someone knows something, and got thoroughly pissed off with the Trudeau Liberals, eh!

During a campaign where the Liberal war room has been hammering Conservative candidates for past social media transgressions, the resurfacing of the photo put the Trudeau re-election campaign on its heels.

Trudeau admitted that it was not the only time he wore brownface or blackface “makeup.” He said he also dressed up in a “costume” and wore “makeup” and sang “Day O” — an old Harry Belafonte song known as The Banana Boat Song.

Trudeau and his team had not expected to be knocked off course by his past in this election, believing that his opponents had already thrown everything they had on him in the last election.

Not hard to imagine at all; they'd be calling for a public burning.

I can see a future debate exchange:

Trudeau: "You voted against legalizing same-sex marriage!"

Scheer: "At least I never blacked up!" (This could really be used as a riposte by any of the opposition leaders to a criticism by the PM, come to think of it.)

The NDP may be able to get something out of this, but other occasions Trudeau's done something that would irritate his left flank more than anyone else (such as almost anything that happened this spring!) they haven't gotten much of a rise. We shall see what happens. I'm especially curious to see if Jagmeet Singh will make a definitive statement ("I can no longer countenance supporting a Liberal minority government") akin to the one he made over the Scheer speech.

Elizabeth May might be quite grateful for this too, as her error-riddled platform introduction won't be getting much notice now.

I have tried to give you the benefit of the doubt but it is election season and you have turned back into a complete Liberal hack. He is a misogynist pig who sold himself as a feminist, just like he is a elitist fascist who sold himself as a progressive and his racism is incidental to his overall sense of privilege.  He hasn't learnt his lesson given his recent appropriation of Indian culture on his trip to that country.

swallow swallow's picture

Blackface and brownface were racist in 2001. Anyone who remembers 2001 admits it. JUSTIN TRUDEAU admits it.

Liberal partisans will, of course, fall over themselves to excuse it. Even after JUSTIN TRUDEAU HIMSELF apologizes and says it was racist of him.

Hurtin Albertan

I also find it odd that this never surfaced until now, the timing of it all is remarkable.

Maybe it will gain him support from PPC supporters.  Has Bernier ever been seen in blackface?

The memes practically write themselves.  Trudeau's statement to the media was pretty cringeworthy, he said so many stupid things.  Case by case basis.  Holy crap.

I don't want Josh to be right but I think he is. The economy and climate change are the big issues. Even so people don't seem to understand that the NDP is the only party seriously addressing those issues.

Isn't this the sort of thing the, er "vetting process" is supposed to disclose?

robbie_dee

I think Trudeau’s apology was strong and sounded sincere. Much better than how he mishandled SNC Lavelin. This will slow down the Liberal war room from playing “gotcha” on the Conservatives but ultimately I don’t think it will change many votes. Maybe bumped the Liberals down from a second majority to a minority, Jagmeet, to his credit, has struck a very good tone too and has probably now saved the NDP’s official Party status. But this election is still a two party contest and it’s not like a Scheer government would be *less* racist. I think Trudeau survives this.

Hurtin Albertan

You have to think that someone would have thought to look for old copies of the yearbooks from where Trudeau worked and/or talk to his former staff members and students in hopes of finding this sort of stuff.  Maybe they did try and just never found a copy of a yearbook that had anything good.   Maybe it's not that easy to find yearbooks from that long ago.

swallow swallow's picture

I don't care if Trudeau survives, or what it does to the polls, or how it will play in Kenora.

I DO care that there are people in Canada who think it wasn't considered racist to wear blackface or brownface in 2001. But I guess in a racist country it's no surprise.

Jagmeet Singh said it perfectly today, speaking not to Trudeau but to people who have suffered racism.

https://globalnews.ca/video/5921961/jagmeet-singh-delivers-emotional-reaction-to-trudeau-brownface-photo

I don't care if that statement raises or lowers his poll numbers. It needed saying and it was well said.

kropotkin1951

The idea that blackface was acceptable in 2001 depends on whether or not you accepted racism. It was reprehensible then and was acknowledged as such by every human rights activist and lawyer before then. Canadian society has a deep racist core. Trudeau is a hypocrite who knows how to spout the "rights" language to impress people but he is a spoiled elitist who thinks he is the master of all. He was not consciously racist its merely that he has disdain for anyone not connected to the elite world he grew up in and lives in.

robbie_dee

Agree Jagmeet is handling this very well. I think Canada is fortunate to have him in the position he is in right now. But also think that however offensive Trudeau’s actions in 2001 were, or are now that they’ve come to light, they are still a sideshow from the very serious issues facing poc and all Canadians right now. Even assuming Andrew Scheer has never done anything like this a government led by him and his party would be far worse for far more people than one led by Trudeau and the Liberals.

^^^ Agree with this too. The prep school privilege is just dripping from the clueless grins across all those faces in the photo. Of course they should have known better. But they didn’t, because well, that was the bubble they lived in.

But we also knew that’s who Justin Trudeau was, even back in 2015. We voted him in anyways.

NorthReport

Of course Liberal posters are going to say this will just blow over, but perhaps we ought to at least let people of colour express their point of view first, before once again it becomes just another water under the bridge scenario. What would actually be constructive is for some Liberal poster here to express some sadness, some contriteness, about the racism that people of colour have been subjected to, yes here in Canada.

Pondering

While that is true a surging NDP does not mean a Conservative government. It could mean a Liberal minority with the NDP holding the balance of power.

My prediction is that Justin stays on and wins another majority government. Ever since the coalition incident of 2008, a clear majority of Canadians have wanted a majority government, and I believe they will vote accordingly.

I was having breakfast with a group of folks on Halloween morning in 2000 in Temagami, Ontario.  We were on our way back to southern Ontario from points further north.  The place we stopped at was known for having really good breakfasts.

The servers were all dressed up in various Halloween costumes.   One of the servers was dressed up as "Aunt Jemima" from the pancake mix boxes, complete in blackface.

All of us were kind of freaked out by this, but one of the people in our group, who I considered to be a little on the "small town redneck" side was totally freaked out by the server dressed in blackface and thought it was totally wrong and racist.

So, if a small town redneckish working class guy of about 35 at the time could figure out that this was totally racist, one would think that a Prime Minister's son who went to posh private schools could figure this out by age 29-30.

But the rich, as they say, are different.

It seems that the only thing you are interested in is whether it will affect the Liberal vote and the election outcome.

Although I am Caucasian, my Filipino wife and our 25 and 18 year old sons are strongly offended by Trudeau's black and brown face actions, as I am. I recognize that not all people of colour will view this in the same light, but it does dredge up memories for my family that are far from pleasant, regardless of the extent to which it affects the election outcome.

By the way, your statement is factually incorrect on two counts. This did not happen "in his college days" as you allege but when he was a 29 high school teacher, a position in which you are expected to be a role model to children. It also raises the question of why he has his hand directly above the breast of one of the women.

It was also not a matter of dressing up "once" as you allege, because he also did in high school in black face, according to press reports that he also admitted to.
