Justin Trudeau backing out of debates

I wonder why Justin Trudeau is backing out of so many televised debates? I also wonder how this is going to affect the polls and his support? This has never happened from a Prime Minister before. Is this a wise move or does it signify that Justin Trudeau is simply not mature enough for the job?

Ken Burch

Survey says "He's a coward".

1) Justin isn't the fresh face this year.  And he doesn't have a "You Kids Get Off My Lawn!" type to play off of now as he did with Mulcair in 2015.

2) Unlike a campaign ad or a rally, a debate is an uncontrolled, unpredictable environment.  You need to be able to think on your feet to handle a situation like that.  Justin can't do that.

3) If he's standing next to Singh at a debate podium, he gives Singh the chance to look at least equal to him and keeps the "brownface/turban" thing in play as an issue.  The Cons aren't going to take votes from the Liberals on that, they haven't had "street cred" on antiracism issues since the days of Diefenbaker and Lincoln Alexander-they won't lose votes to the Bloc on that in Quebec-the Bloc has made themselves just as much the party of xenophobia as of separatism-the Greens have never played a major role in opposing bigotry and social oppression in Canada, and since this is May's last rodeo, voters angry with Justin about that would not switch to her-but the NDP has at least something of a progressive record on opposing racism and bigotry in the present, and have a leader whose long-derided personal appearance, combined with the eloquence and gravitas Singh can summon on a good day, could be, after all the missteps and all the disorganization, a mortal threat to Justin in much of the country-the Liberals could easily be wiped out in B.C., for example, and could be at rish in Toronto-area and I'd say in Montreal-area ridings the Liberals had been assuming they would gain.  The Cons, Greens, Bloc and obviously Le Petit Parti Bernier have no credibility on this issue-but a party led by a man wearing a turban clearly does if that man is standing next to Justin and manages simply to display quiet dignity and gravitas.  Singh can pull that off easily.  That's what the Liberal war room is terrified about.

It doesn't matter, the Liberals are going to win this election. Just a matter of will they make a minority or majority government...sorry people

Alan, nobody is trying to tell YOU how to vote.  And you're riding won't go Con no matter what happens.

It's only worth having the Liberals in power if they're reduced to a minority.

That situation produced great governance in the 1963-68 and 1972-74 periods.
When they're in the majority, they just get dismissive and arrogant.

Where have I told anyoner has to vote for,Ken? Really,I don't expect to find any converts here anyway.

My point for 10 years has been that if you think the Liberals are worse than the Conserevsatives, you're out of your fucking mind. The Liberals delivered a few good policies, policies in which the partisans here would be taking victory laps if the NDP delivered those same policies.

Vote any which way you want. I don't care. But don 't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining.

Sorry Alan it's going to the conservatives. Majority or maybe minority.

Quit trolling me. And don't be so arrogantly confident. Get back to me October 22.

BTW, a Conservative minority will be brought down by a Liberal/NDP cooperation. Thank you, come again!

I said nothing that was in any way personally hostile to you, Alan.  Or anything that was in any way personal about you at all.  Back off on the abusive responses already.

Abuse? Oh, Ken. If I was abusing you, you'd know it.

You mean the way the Liberals co-operated with the NDP and removed Harper in 2008?

I remember that.  Harper was stopped right then and there, and they all lived...uh...oh...never mind...

I think things will be different this time around. If the Liberals lose their majority to a Conservative minority, Trudeau willl be turfed and the leaderless Liberals will be willing to work with the NDP. I'll put $$$ on it.

You have a lot of nerve to tell me I should lay off the abuse. Maybe you should take your own advice.

That's a really weird thing to say. I get that it's a really emotional issue for you Alan but you don't need to speak so harshly to members here.

Remember when Harper backed out of the consortuim sponsored debates, so they never happened? That's not good company for Trudeau to keep.

NorthReport

2008 said it all

If the Liberals had a choice between a Conservative and a NDP government the Conservatives would win hands down

The only reason the Liberals have ever brought forward progressive legislation is that they were being prodded in some way by the NDP

The Liberals are no friends of the NDP and they spend the bulk of all their campaigns trashing the NDP led by The Liberal Party’s arm of the biased Canadian media, the CBC. Disgusting, an affront to democracy, but true.

Thank you. I forgot about Harper. I am happy that you corrected me.

Oh shut up,Paladian. All you do is troll me. I'm getting sick of it. I wasn't being emotional. maybe you are confusing me with Ken.

I have no problem ignoring you, please ignore me and fuck off. OK?

Paladin1

Well Alan I honestly think you need to talk to someone. Either here, privately, or off the internet where ever you're at.

Your posts the last few days are even more agressive, emotional and abusive than normal.

I've never insulted you or attacked you. But by all means do ignore me.

alan smithee alan smithee's picture

Ken. Could you show me where I attacked you or talked to you without respect? Or are you attacking me for voting Liberal?

Here's a question I have been wanting to ask you. Are you American or just live in the US? Either way, who are you voting for in 2020? Democrat or Republican? I don't think you'd vote Republican but if you are voting Democrat.please explain to me what the difference is between the Democrats and the LPC?

Thank you Ken. And there was no abuse in anything I said to you. Maybe salty but not abusive.

1) The "don't piss on my leg and tell me its raining" was at least getting there.  My comment is also related to the responses you've been making to any number of other posters are going on a deeply nasty direction, and nobody here has done anything to deserve it.

2) MY answer to that question has varied based on where I have lived.  In 1996 and 2000, when the state I then lived in-Alaska-was never in any sense in play, I voted for Nader.  I considered voting for either John Anderson or Barry Commoner, the Citizen's Party candidate,  in 1980, when I lived in Oregon.  I have voted Democratic in states where the outcome was in play in other years.   My choices on that have also been conditioned by the continued existence of the Electoral College, an institution which makes it utterly pointless to vote for minor-party candidates in PRESIDENTIAL elections.  I've voted for minor party candidates in elections for other offices.

I don't understand why you took my posts so personally.  I wasn't saying anything about you in any of them.  You are going to vote as you will.  What, exactly, do you WANT from the rest of us?
