The Democrats Impeachment Attempt Against Trump is a Huge Mistake

Democrats need to push good policies not another political stunt. An utterly stupid move. This practically guarantees the reelection of Donald Trump.

Well that should make you happy.

That's pretty damning. The tRump Administration all belong behind bars. Including Rudy Colludy.

Man, it's all right there for people to read. These right wingers are going to bend into a pretzel trying to sweep this under the rug.

tRump is done in 2020. Gauranteed.

And when that happens I hope the districts in New York will subpoena him. He is no longere Dictator, he's a private citizen. I think tRump,Miller,Guiliani and the rest of these corrupt Nazis will look great in orange.

I don't support impeaching Trump. Instead, I support defeating him in the 202o Presidential election. Impeaching Trump before the 2020 election would make Mike Pence the President, and Pence would be much more likely to win the 2020 Presidential election.

Pence would also be far more likely to do things like attack Iran.

New York Times faces backlash after revealing details about whistleblower

National security experts and advocates for whistleblower protection condemn publication of identifying information

The New York Times is facing criticism over its decision to publish revealing details about the whistleblower whose explosive complaint, which raised concerns about Donald Trump’s conversation with the Ukrainian president and the White House’s apparent attempts to cover it up, was made public on Thursday.

Readers, including those who work with or within the intelligence community, national security experts and advocates for whistleblower protection, expressed concern that the decision compromised the individual’s safety.

The newspaper reported the whistleblower’s employer as the CIA and details on their expertise, citing three unnamed people familiar with the individual’s identity. Since the article’s publication online on Thursday, the newspaper has added the context that the White House already knew where the whistleblower was employed.

Identifying information published in the paper “recklessly narrows that universe of suspected whistleblowers to a very few people,” said Jesselyn Radack, the director of national security and human rights at the Whistleblower and Source Protection Program. “This has a very chilling effect on anyone who is even thinking of blowing the whistle and thinking of doing so through the proper channels.”

White House tried to cover up Trump's Ukraine conversation, whistleblower alleges

The individual is especially at risk given that Trump lashed out at those who informed the whistleblower, comparing them to spies, and alluded to retaliation. In audio obtained by the Los Angeles Times, Trump can be heard asking: “Who’s the person that gave the whistleblower the information? Because that’s close to a spy. You know what we used to do in the old days, when we were smart, right? The spies and treason? We used to handle it a little differently than we do now.”

Radack, who has represented national security and intelligence community employees – including Edward Snowden and John Kiriakou – who have been investigated and charged under the Espionage Act, said the New York Times had left the whistleblower particularly “vulnerable” because they “are up against the full force of the entire executive branch”.

The whistleblower and former NSA agent Thomas Drake, another of Radack’s clients who leaked information about the agency’s data-gathering in 2006, echoed concerns that the newspaper had endangered the Trump whistleblower.

The New York Times’ executive editor, Dean Baquet, defended the publication’s decision. “The president and some of his supporters have attacked the credibility of the whistle-blower, who has presented information that has touched off a landmark impeachment proceeding,” Baquet said in a statement. “We wanted to provide information to readers that allows them to make their own judgments about whether or not he is credible.”

Danielle Brian, the executive director of the not-for-profit watchdog Project On Government Oversight, argued that the move was unnecessary because the whistleblower’s credibility “was already stabilized by the Inspector General and the Department of National Intelligence”, which recognized the complaint as urgent and credible. “We didn’t need the New York Times to tell us what agency this person came from,” Brian said.

Mark Zaid, an attorney representing the whistleblower, wrote on Twitter: “Publishing details about whistleblower will only lead to identification of someone, whether our client or wrong person, as whistleblower. This will place individual in much more dangerous situation, not only in their professional world but also their possible personal safety.”

The whistleblower’s legal team did not provide additional comment to the Guardian.

The New York Times did not immediately respond to the Guardian’s request for additional comment.

Whistleblower painstakingly gathered material and almost single-handedly set impeachment in motion

What is in the declassified Trump whistleblower complaint

The Washington Post’s Devlin Barrett reports on the key takeaways from the declassified whistleblower complaint against President Trump. (JM Rieger/The Washington Post)

By Greg Miller

The whistleblower’s identity remains obscured, the details of his work for the CIA cloaked in secrecy. But the document he delivered reveals almost as much about the investigative mission he carried out in stealth as it does about the alleged abuses of power by the president.

From the moment he learned about President Trump’s attempts to extract political dirt on former vice president Joe Biden from the newly elected leader of Ukraine on July 25, the CIA officer behind the whistleblower report moved swiftly behind the scenes to assemble material from at least a half-dozen highly placed — and equally dismayed — U.S. officials.

He wove their accounts with other painstakingly gathered material on everything from the intervention of Trump’s personal lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani in the U.S.-Ukraine relationship to alleged efforts by American diplomats sent to Kiev and attorneys in the Office of the White House Counsel to contain or suppress the accruing damage.

I agree. And, paradoxically, while Trump is better than Pence as far as policy goes(ie. less likely to engage in military adventurism), he's also better for the Democrats because their supporters perceive him as being generally worse, IOW he rallies their base to the polls to get rid of him.

If Trump gets removed from office, I worry a lot of Democrats will become less enagaged, on the assumption that Pence isn't so bad, even though Pence would actually be worse.

^ The best strategy for the Dems right now would be to keep some form of quasi-impeachment going until the election, maybe just always have a few investigations on the go, to make sure that Trump's misconduct stays in the news.

I'll also say that, no matter what happens, I also hope that Trump's engagement with North Korea is continued by any future replacement, that policy also being popular with the current centre-left government in the ROK.

Chris Hedges: The Problem With Impeachment:

The Problem With Impeachment

Mr. Fish / Truthdig

Impeaching Donald Trump would do nothing to halt the deep decay that has beset the American republic. It would not magically restore democratic institutions. It would not return us to the rule of law. It would not curb the predatory appetites of the big banks, the war industry and corporations. It would not get corporate money out of politics or end our system of legalized bribery. It would not halt the wholesale surveillance and monitoring of the public by the security services. It would not end the reigns of terror practiced by paramilitary police in impoverished neighborhoods or the mass incarceration of 2.3 million citizens. It would not impede ICE from hunting down the undocumented and ripping children from their arms to pen them in cages. It would not halt the extraction of fossil fuels and the looming ecocide. It would not give us a press freed from the corporate mandate to turn news into burlesque for profit. It would not end our endless and futile wars. It would not ameliorate the hatred between the nation’s warring tribes—indeed would only exacerbate these hatreds.

Impeachment is about cosmetics. It is about replacing the public face of empire with a political mandarin such as Joe Biden, himself steeped in corruption and obsequious service to the rich and corporate power, who will carry out the same suicidal policies with appropriate regal decorum. The ruling elites have had enough of Trump’s vulgarity, stupidity and staggering ineptitude. They turned on him not over an egregious impeachable offense—there have been numerous impeachable offenses including the use of the presidency for personal enrichment, inciting violence and racism, passing on classified intelligence to foreign officials, obstruction of justice and a pathological inability to tell the truth—but because he made the fatal mistake of trying to take down a fellow member of the ruling elite.

...

Economic, social and political stagnation, coupled with a belief that our expectations for our lives and the lives of our children have been thwarted, breeds violence. Trump, fighting for his political life, will use rhetorical gasoline to set it alight. He will demonize his opponents as the embodiment of evil. He will seek to widen the divisions and antagonisms, especially around race. He will brand his political opponents as irredeemable enemies and traitors. He will demand omnipotence, the power of a dictator. Many of those for whom he is a cult leader will seek to give it to him. For when the magical aura of Trump’s power is attacked, those in the Trump cult feel attacked. He is an extension of them. Trump embodies the yearning by millions of Americans, especially those in the Christian right, for a cult leader.

The efforts by the Democratic Party and much of the press, including CNN and The New York Times, to remove Trump from office, as if our problems are embodied in him, will backfire. Our social, cultural, economic and political crisis created a demagogue like Trump. These forces will grow more virulent if Trump is impeached. The longer we fail to confront and name the corporate forces responsible for the misery of over half the U.S. population and our broken democracy, the more the disease of cultism will spread. It was the seizure of power by corporations that vomited up Trump. And it will be only by freeing ourselves from corporate rule, by rebuilding our democratic institutions, including the legislative bodies, the courts and the media, that we can roll back from the abyss.

The Progressive Case Against Impeachment:

Quote:
ut make no mistake, the populist wave that brought Trump to power is strong. It’s the reason he easily could be reelected. And it is toward these underlying forces and grievances that we must focus our attention.

Right-wing populism is on the rise globally because it provides an easy answer to the real,  justifiable anger about the neo-liberal world order. To put it simply, the right-wing answer is racism — “nationalism,” if you want to put the in vogue spin on it. Right-wing populists say, “Your life is terrible because of immigrants — the Central American or Muslim or African who is taking your job, ruining your community.” The nice thing for right-wing populists is that it’s easy to deliver on the promise of racism. As we’ve seen recently, hate crimes are up. Once off-limits ideas are mainstream. The white, working class has gotten a psychological dopamine hit from once again freely asserting their superiority over their black and brown brothers and sisters.

The only way to combat such ideology is with left-wing populism that addresses the real grievances without nativism and racism. This won’t be easy. With left-wing populism, it’s more difficult to deliver results because it requires delivering material benefits and not just psychological ones. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is the best model we have for what successful left-wing populism might look like — and obviously his agenda would be really hard to enact.
