Liberal MP Judy Sgro Says Blacks Love Trudeau More for His Blackface

Toronto Liberal Judy Sgro, MP for Humber River -Black Creek, has had to apologize for saying that Blacks love Trudeau more for his dressing up in blackface. This comment is so racist and out of touch with reality that she should resign. Her apology that her comments were "insensitive" only further condemns her in its failure to recognize how atrocious her comment truly was. Of course Trudeau will not ask her to resign because it would raise the question of why he did not resign for his brown/blackface actions.

A Toronto-area Liberal candidate is apologizing for suggesting people "in the black community" like Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau more because he dressed up in blackface.

Nearly two weeks ago, Judy Sgro, who is vying for re-election in the riding of Humber River-Black Creek, gave a one-on-one interview with a news organization called GBKM FM. During the interview, she was asked about Trudeau wearing blackface makeup.

"Those in the black community have told me how much more love they have for the prime minister, that he wanted to have a black face. That he took great pride in that, too," Sgro said. "And that it's the media that have blown this into something that it shouldn't be and that they're very supportive." ...

A video clip from that interview resurfaced today and is being widely shared online.

Sgro acknowledged on her Facebook page today that those comments were insensitive. "I should have known better, and I apologize. The history of blackface is deeply racist and it is nothing other than discriminatory," she wrote. "This issue has sparked an important conversation in our country and needs to be treated with great seriousness and sensitivity. I will continue to have these important conversations with my constituents."

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh called her comments "ludicrous." "It is embarrassing and shameful that she would suggest that people like Mr. Trudeau more because he did blackface," he said during a media availability today. "That shows a massive disconnect between the Liberal Party, and in fact Mr. Trudeau, and what real people are living and experiencing."

An easy slip of the tongue: she meant to say Americans instead of Canadians, and Al Jolson instead of Justin Trudeau. Could have happened to anybody . . .

voice of the damned

First she says "We've all done things that were inappropriate in our lives". Then, she says black people love him for doing it.

Imagine the impossible. Her losing what is arguably the safest Liberal seat in the country.

It won't matter who the NDP candidate is, to be honest.  If Judy Sgro loses then there are no Liberal seats anywhere in Canada.

People make mistakes but where is accountability any more.

How do the visible minorities in her riding feel they are going to be represented now?

On principle Sgro needs to resign. It would do everyone in Canada, particularily our visible minorities, the world of good.

Just like the Liberal candidate in the Maritimes who should have stepped down, or have been bounced as well.

This does not look good on the Liberals.

she won't cost the Liberals her seat but she may cost them others.

That's my assessment too. In close races, people of colour and other minorities may shift their vote enough to change who wins in some ridings, most likely favouring the party of only leader of colour in the race.

The attitude of Liberals that all that matters is whether they win Sgro's riding reflects the attitude they typically display in their posts where issues are almost never discussed from the point of view of how they affect people, but from the point of view of whether they can help win the election is a reflection of how they campaign.

The Liberals have promised child care in every election for 26 years, promised pharmacare in every election for 22 years, but their promises lack detail and far too little funding to accomplish much in this regard. Their promise to introduce electoral reform disappeared as soon as they won a majority. Their promise to address climate change ended up  with the Liberals adopting Harper's woeful greenhouse emission reduction targets, which they cannot now possibly meet for 2020 according to the auditor general in March 2018 (http://www.oag-bvg.gc.ca/internet/English/parl_otp_201803_e_42883.html) and are all but guaranteed to miss for 2030,  according to Environment Commissioner Julie Gelfand in April 2019 (https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/environment-commissioner-julie-gelfand-...), continuing the pattern set by Chretien and Martin's failure to meet their Kyoto Accord promises.

Trudeau said he is not challenging the Canadian Human Rights tribunal's conclusion that compensation should be awarded to 54,000 indigenous children who have been apprehended since 2000 but because they do not have enough time to implement the decision. However, their own court documents say the exact opposite: that they want the compensation ruling dismissed. (https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/singh-liberals-indigenous-grassy-narrow...)

And all we get in response to Trudeau's brown/blackface actions and Sgro's comments is that they don't seem to be affecting their poll results. No concern expressed about this issue or the others themselves.

There are growing signs that the Liberals are starting to pay in the polls for these issues. However, if they do win the election, these posters will assure us that everything is okay now.

Don’t be so sure.

The NDP gained this seat in last year’s provincial election.

Sgro pulled strings to ensure her daughter the Liberal nomination but she came a bad third in the election.

And the NDP has a strong candidate in long-time city counsellor Maria Augimeri.

Go Maria!!!

The Liberal brand was exhausted in last year’s provincial election and the situation is very different now. Still though, I hope that people take another look.

I'd like to see one black person in the community who will admit saying that to her.

She got caught up in her Trudeau mania and dropped a pretyt big lie

Unfortunately she is not an activist and has run as an NDP candidate both provincially and municipally for decades so she likely will not be able to benefit a whole lot from Singh's charisma with millennials.

Why does this make the top 100 list of things he should apologize for?

I guess the idea is that his column is all about how the media, explicitly including himself, didn't do a good job of investigating the rumours around Trudeau, so he should apologize for being part of the problem?
