A major source of torment in his life was his rage and sadness about the work of his father, Richard-an alleged human being who chose to spend his life lobbying for the tobacco industry, against decent wages for working people, and against unions-especially unions for restaurant employees, a group which is in more desperate need of union representation than any other. David Berman actually quit the music industry to devote his life to undoing the damage his father caused.
David Berman seems to have chosen suicide because neither he-nor any other human being working alone-could acheive the tasks he set for himself. The parallels to the death of Phil Ochs are already haunting me.

On this day in 1887, four anarchists were hanged in Chicago for protesting against police violence and in support of an 8-hour work day. Another defendant committed suicide in his cell. The Haymarket martyrs lost their lives fighting to create a better world.

This was also the centennial of the Centralia Tragedy in Washington state. At the first Armistice Day(Remembrance Day) parade in that town, members of the newly-formed American Legion from Centralia and the neighboring town of Chehalis were marched past the Wobbly Hall-the local hq/clubhouse/meeting place of the Industrial Workers of the World-which was set up in the Roderick Hotel on Tower Street-a hall the wealthy had been trying to run out of town fir several years, despite the fact it had every right to be there-and the picture I'm posting here shows how terrifyingly large the crowd of Legion members were. When the Legionnaires stopped, they stopped directly in front of the Wobbly Hall. At some point, some in the Legion contingent were perceived as advancing on the hall to destroy it. Shots were fired, people on both sides, Wobbly and Legionnaire, were dead. One Wobbly, Wesley Everest, who had been arrested after firing in self-defense and defense of the hall was taken from the Centralia Jail where he was held, and lynched-possibly castrated, and eventually hanged at the town bridge. The IWW was driven from town and the Wobbly Hall destroyed. Today, 60 or so of us went to Wesley Everest's grave to pay tribute. As Joe Hill said "Don't mourn-ORGANIZE!"

Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch puppeteer Caroll Spinney, 85
The Sesame Workshop said in a statement that the legendary puppeteer lived for some time with dystonia, which causes involuntary muscle contractions.
Spinney voiced and operated the two major Muppets from their inception in 1969 when he was 36, and performed them almost exclusively into his 80s on the PBS kids’ television show that later moved to HBO.
“Before I came to Sesame Street, I didn’t feel like what I was doing was very important,” Spinney said when he announced his retirement in 2018. “Big Bird helped me find my purpose.”

Jamie Lee Hamilton, a longtime advocate for Vancouver's sex worker and transgender communities, died in the city early Monday morning. She was 64.
David C. Jones, a local actor and director, said Hamilton died at 1:36 am with close friends at her bedside at Cottage Hospice. She moved into the care facility in East Vancouver's Burrard View Park on Dec. 9, a few months after learning she had colon cancer.
"She was an important woman," Jones told CBC News. "She was infuriating, but so steadfast and so passionately supportive of people who needed support."
On Saturday, two days before her death, Hamilton's friends and family, including Non-Partisan Association Coun. Colleen Hardwick, gathered at her bedside to witness her baptism. At her request, they sang Amazing Grace.
Entering sex work as a teenager, Hamilton went on to become a fierce advocate for the rights of sex trade workers. In 1996, she famously dumped 67 high heels at the steps of Vancouver City Hall to protest the lack of response to the 67 women who had gone missing in the Downtown Eastside until that point.
At the time, Hamilton and others raised the prospect of an active serial killer in the community, years before police discovered Port Coquitlam pig farmer Robert Pickton had killed scores of women from the Downtown Eastside.
Hamilton later became a key voice in the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
"She was always ahead of the rest of us on any issue," said homeless advocate and longtime friend Judy Graves. "She fought for everyone."

I don't have the answer to that. It goes to the work of giving those young people occasions for hope and emotional support, all of which has to be done on the terms of whichever FN/Inuit/Dene band has jurisdiction in which area.

I was thinking about the early deaths of my friend Wasyl and his band mate André. I put this on and it has haunted me for days. Wasyl and André left part of their souls behind in this piece as did Kelly in her music and they will live on because of it.
