No wars are about protecting the lives of the innocent anymore.

The vast majority of those who have been killed in the Western invasions of Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya were innocent. The vast majority of those who would die if Narendra Modi launched a war to take Kashmir or to undo the existence of Pakistan-just as would be the case if Pakistan ever launched a military offensive against India-would be innocent.

There are no wars anywhere anymore where the killing is righteous.  There haven't been any since VE Day.  And there are no religions which are any more deserving of violent suppression than any others.  All religions are equally bad and good in their effects on the human race.

And there's nothing "champagne" about regarding war as something the world needs to be done with. hundreds of millions, perhaps billions of people around the planet want the very concept of war to be a thing of the past.

didn't know Cherry blossoms laid down their lives for anything. if they had they wouldn't  threaten to stop buying poppies or ripping up Legion memberships.

Ken is correct that a large part of war after World War II has been more about furthering the aims of the military-industrial complex more than it has been about achieving peace or protecting people from persecution.

Eisenhower warned people about it in the early 1960's, so it had already become a problem as far back as half a century ago.

Haha. That was good. Any other jokes up your sleeve? I raise my flute to you.

Thou shalt not kill would be a really good rule, without the religious exemptions to make murder holy.

I always liked what George Harrison said about that during an interview in the late Sixties:  "It says 'Thou Shalt Not Kill',not 'Amend Section A'".

Don Cherry was of military age during the Korean conflict.  You'd think he'd have been eager to join up.  Anyone know if he ever actually did?  If the guy was healthy enough to start a mediocre hockey-playing career that some regiment or other would've eagerly signed up-especially during an engagement in which 312 Canadians died in combat and 516 died overall.

i haven't checked myself but my mom said she did and she couldn't  find anything or any support of the military by Cherry around then or even decades later.

my comment was about the larger rabid Cherry supporters.  if they been actual military they would never threaten to stop buying poppies or rip up their Legion memberships just because the Legion said they didnt agree with Cherry's comments.

all fake outrage to protect their racism.

Wars will happen as long as men exist.
You can turn war into something that is between Armies or deny this reality and keep the status quo.

Which, is mass civilian casualties.

Beyond that your philosophical musings about all religions being equally good or bad is just amusement for your audience. :)

They also wouldn't vandalize a cenotaph even if they disagreed with Cherry being fired.

So...because they're mad that Don Cherry was fired for unjustly singling out non-European immigrants for not buying poppies-as opposed for simply noting that hardly ANYONE buys poppies-they're threatening to STOP buying poppies?  And defacing memorials to the war dead?

Ken Burch

And if Don intentionally sat out the war Canadian troops died in-and that he probably loudly cheered for- in HIS generation, that puts his obsessive super-patriotism in a different and far more pathetic and hypocritical light.  It makes him comparable in a way, to John Wayne, who only took on HIS "hero who fought in every war ever waged on a soundstage" persona after refusing to set his movie career aside to actually fight during World War II.  During that war, John Wayne was sent out on USO tours to visit the troops who were truly putting their lives on the line, and when those troops caught sight of him, knowing he hadn't joined up will other Hollywood stars his age or older, like Clark Gable and Jimmy Stewart had, they booed him out of the room.  It would not surprise me if Don Cherry has lived his life terrified of Canadian troops and the survivors of fallen Canadian troops doing the same thing to him if they found out he could've joined up but didn't.

As I said, his fanatics are no different than Trump's. These morons would follow them off a cliff if they told them.

When I'd (regretfully) read other comments from TSN to National Post and the idea of 'Cherry for PM' is a feverish nightmare. HIGHLY unqualified and too egotistical to work for ALL Canadians. (Sound familiar?)

These people look to Cherry as an Every- Canadian-Ordinary Joe. He's today's Ronald Reagan. Old and out of touch. Reactionary and ignorant and suffering from dementia.

Vandailizing Cenotaphs and protesting against poppies is the height of Personality cultist behavior.

These are the same people who are of Ford Nation. CPC supporters.

I expect even MORE stupid things to happen in the future.

Seems to me that all religions especially ones with written books of revealed truths are right about some things and wrong about other things. The proponents of those spiritual differences then murder each other in the name of their respective deities. I'll just settle for the idea that I am merely human and when I die I will be dead.

War involves "Armies", but that's not all who are involved with it.  The politicians or rulers who are always the ones who decide to start wars are involved, too.  The large numbers of innocent, unarmed civilians who are killed in wars are involved in it as well.  Those who mourn the deaths of the soldiers and civilians who are killed in war-virtually all for no valid reason in this day in age-are involved as well.

It's not as if no one who is not part of a military has any legitimacy in speaking or thinking about war.

And the reality is...in this day and age, the era of the just war, of the righteous slaughter, is over.

Nothing has been made any better, anywhere in the world, by any war started by any ruler after 1945.  All conflicts occurring after that time have simply been death for the sake of national arrogance.

It's about financial profit by the military-industrial complex that Eisenhower warned us about in his 1961 retirement speech.

Support for firing Cherry from an unlikely place:

Quote:
I think Sportsnet was right to dump the long-time namesake of Coach’s Corner on Hockey Night in Canada. When Cherry excoriated “you people” — meaning immigrants — for not wearing poppies to honour Canada’s veterans on Remembrance Day, the controversial, tell-it-like-it-is character went too far.

...

On Saturday, of course, on his weekly broadcast between the first and second periods of the NHL game of the week, Cherry said “You people … you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you can pay a couple bucks for a poppy … These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada, these guys paid the biggest price.”

He then singled out new Canadians in Toronto and Mississauga, where he lives.

Monday, Cherry said to Warmington, “I know what I said and I meant it. Everybody in Canada should wear a poppy to honour our fallen soldiers.”

Cherry may think those two statements are equivalent, but “everybody in Canada” is a very different phrase from “you people,” especially when you go on to identify which people it is you are criticizing — and you are criticizing them for their national origin.

(Cherry claims he did not mean people’s race and I see no evidence in his words or demeanour to suggest he’s lying.)

But “you people” is a lumping term. It lumps together all people with a specific characteristic and blames them equally, whether or not as individuals they deserve a particular accusation.

Sean in Ottawa

Funny, here in Ottawa there is a pig farm about15 km away and it sure stinks when the wind blows in the right (wrong!) direction.

But, we do not talk about it endlessly. What is with the continued conversation about a guy who was justifiably, and very beleatedly, fired for off-topic offensive propaganda?
