LMAO Gee I thought voter suppression was an ingrained part of the US electoral system. Its now going to be Putin the evil masterminds fault. US voter suppression started before he was even born.

The Senate Intelligence Committee concluded that the Russian government used social media in the 2016 election to help President Trump secure victory and hurt the Hillary Clinton campaign, the panel said in an 85-page report released on Tuesday.

Here They Go Again: Senate Reheats 'Russian Meddling' Claims, Using Assertions as Evidence

https://on.rt.com/a30x

"The Senate Intelligence Committee's final report on 'Russian Interference' in the 2016 US presidential election is short on evidence and long on reheated assertions and innuendo from 'experts' exposed as actual election meddlers. There is little new in the 85-page, partially redacted document released on Tuesday, that has not been made public by the committee previously - including the accusations that 'Russia' focused on stoking anger and resentment among African Americans, for example..."

So it has now been established that Russia hacked the DNC and Clinton's campaign manager, and disseminated the information.  In an effort to elect Trump.  And engaged in an online disinformation campaign.  In an effort to elect Trump.

Drivel and nothing-burgers.  No such thing was 'established' and can't ever be because it never happened. What was established was that it was a leak not a hack. Which is why the DNC refused to give up the servers to the FBI. And why NSA can't produce the evidence either.

Both have been established beyond a doubt.  Which is what Muller, through his indictments and report, concluded.

No, despite the fear-mongering claims of US security state agencies and its media and partisan promoters, that has not been established.

Some Russian internet interference is probable, but there is meager evidence of any massive  funding or sophistication. The known evidence suggests that the commerical clickbait farm, the Internet Research Agency spawned reems of illiterate, for profit, click-through ads across the political and non-political spectrum which were more prevalant after the election.

When Mueller (GW Bush's FBI head and promoter of the Iraq WMD lie) indicted the sleezy Russian Internet Research Agency click-bait farm, he was shocked when their lawyers actually showed up for pre-trial--Mueller then asked for a delay on his own indictment which the judge denied, and there the case died. Indicting GRU agents later was much safer move for Mueller from court scrutiny since foreign agents obviously aren't going to show up in an adversary regime's court.

Comparing the Israeli and Saudi influence, along with domestic voter suppression, Republican gerrymandering, corrupt electorial college, dirty tricks and limitless corporate money, any Russian interference in the supposedly pristine US electorial circus is pretty insignificant. Nevertheless, yet it gets virtually all the focus and hysterical attention in western media of any threat to what is laughingly called democracy in the US.

And should one compare it to active US interventions in the politics of other countries, including coups and invasions, the whole western Russiagate media saturation and fear-mongering is, as Chomsky said, "a joke".

Compare the western media Russiagate coverage with coverage of US foreign interventions (let alone "influence") which are ignored, denied, or more often applauded by the same state-servile MSM that has always thrived on the xenophobic "foreign threat" of designated enemies for imperial action and corporate profit.

Yet, according to many who now self-identify as progressive, the uninterrupted long history of deception by these agencies and their mouthpieces has now become an unquestioned source of truth when they target those they don't like. Those who point out the fundemental untrustworthy nature and history of these agencies and their messaging are now called "conspiracy theorists" by would-be progressives:

To contrarianna, I have posted many times, and at length about the details of this affair, and I have no desire to do so again, but here are a few bullet points

  1. I agree that the U.S. is far ahead of all other contenders when it comes to interfering in elections or sponsoring coups in other countries.
  2. I agree that the CIA and the entire intelligence establishment of the U.S. or any other country is not to be trusted. They are the worst of the worst.
  3. I agree that corporate influence and voter suppression have a much greater effect on U.S. elections than anything the Russians might do.
  4. I think it is a well-established fact that Russian intel sponsored agents successfully spearphished John Podesta, and got access to his gmail account, the contents of which they then publicized.
  5. I think it is very likely that Russian intel sponsored agents hacked the DNC server, as described in the Feb/18 Mueller indictments. Several well respected computer forensics firms have seen the logs, and all agreed with the original conclusion by Crowdstrike.
  6. The Democrats I support have been busy since 2016 running primaries against incumbent Dems in congress. As AOC and her Justice Democrat colleagues show, they have had some success by concentrating on issues, and not whining about Russian interference. Same goes for Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign.

kropotkin1951

Thanks Michael, good summary. I see the whole thing as a red herring. Red herrings to be effective at any level must have major aspects that are the truth, otherwise people don't take the bait. I think it is the height of irony for US imperialist of all political stripes to be complaining about interference in their facade of a democracy.

"Hillary Clinton, the widely despised former Democratic Party presidential candidate has slandered two of her political opponents - Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard and 2016 Green Party presidential candidate Dr Jill Stein - as traitors and Russian spies.

Clinton's attack on Gabbard and Stein makes clear once again that the Democrats' assertions of 'Russian meddling' in the 2016 election were primarily aimed not at Trump, but at the anti-war and anti-capitalist sentiments that led millions of people to refuse to vote for her in 2016. They underscore how the Democrats have appropriated the McCarthyite tactics historically associated primarily with the Republican right..."

And unfortunately, shamefully, emulated now also by some on the 'progressive' Canadian left...

Widely despised?  65 million voters would disagree.  And while I'm not a fan of hers, and I think her remarks are politically stupid, this is all about Russian interference in 2016 to defeat her and elect Trump.

American prosecutors expanded an election-fraud caseagainst 13 Russians that was first brought by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, adding details to flesh out how the defendants allegedly defrauded the U.S. by interfering in the 2016 U.S. presidential race.

The superseding indictment is the latest signal that U.S. prosecutors are aggressively pursuing matters set in motion by Mueller’s investigation of Russian election interference -- even as the Justice Department is also conducting a politically charged investigation of the probe’s origins.

This morning, Trump gave an interview to Fox & Friends repeating the very theory Republicans so angrily denied he has ever promoted. As the friendly hosts looked on apprehensively, Trump began unspooling a wild theory he has mentioned before, and invoked on his phone call to Ukrainian president Zelensky. The theory posits that Ukrainians hacked Democratic emails, framed Russia, and kept the server they hacked to hide their crime. It fixates on the role of CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity firm that helped the FBI solve the crime.

House Republicans’ campaign arm is still relying on CrowdStrike to protect its sensitive data, even as the cybersecurity firm has become embroiled in a bizarre conspiracy theory promoted by President Trump and his GOP allies.

The California company, which Trump and some House Republicans have accused without evidence of conspiring with Democrats in the 2016 election, is still helping the National Republican Congressional Committee protect its networks. The committee has no immediate plans to change vendors, a person familiar with the matter told me.

The New York Times revealed the Trump humiliation Friday, saying that the final report will “debunk a series of conspiracy theories and insinuations about the F.B.I. that Mr. Trump and his allies have put forward over the past two years, the people said, though they cautioned that the report is not complete. Attorney General William Barr is already breaking with a point in the Justice Department Inspector General’s upcoming report that would undermine President Donald Trump’s constant protestations that the probe into his 2016 campaign was a “witch hunt.”

According to the Washington Post, IG Michael Horowitz plans to release his report next week which asserts that the FBI did have enough information to open an investigation into members of the Trump campaign in 2016.

The report also concludes that the FBI did not open the investigation based on the Steele Dossier or leaked information from the CIA, and that the probe did not have its roots in anti-Trump bias at the bureau.

The Horowitz report is hardly a vindication for Democrats, - as is typical for American politics there is enough ambiguity to allow the argument to continue indefinitely.   Republicans will hype the FISA abuses and the erroneous reporting during the campaign and through 2018.   Democrats will hype the finding of no bias as proof there was no witchhunt.   No members of either team will be tempted to change sides, and life will continue as it does.  My hope is that at minimum, politically disengaged Americans increase their distrust and loathing of the intelligence agencies and main stream media.

Matt Taibbi on this:

https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-features/horowitz-report-russia-investigation-questions-remaining-928081/

The Horowitz report makes clear that multiple news cycles over the last few years were dominated by reports that were either incorrect or lacking factual foundation.

These included assertions by multiple outlets that the Steele dossier was not central to the FBI’s efforts to secure a warrant on Page, that the FBI found Christopher Steele and his dossier “credible,” that tales of FISA abuse were conspiracy theory (one of many claims Mother Jones called “bullshit”), that the memo written by Devin Nunes on the subject was wrong and had been “debunked,” that Russians “blocked” Trump from nominating Mitt Romney as Secretary of State, that Trump lawyer Michael Cohen was in Prague (presumably to meet Russian hackers), that a “pee tape” existed, that Russia’s Alfa Bank and the Trump campaign were communicating via a secret server, that the FISA warrant on Page must have been producing good intelligence in order to be renewed three times, and many other things.

The Washington Post is one of the few outlets to start the process of reassessing their coverage, noting in a fact check that a “fair amount” of the Nunes memo had been “vindicated” by Horowitz. Ari Melber of MSNBC also called out James Comey for being “over his skis” on the “pee tape.” These are first steps, but Horowitz’s findings suggest a much broader thematic media FUBAR that’s still being ignored.   ....

Horowitz makes clear that the dossier by Steele was the lynchpin – if not the only foundation – for the FBI’s Trump-Russia conspiracy case. As one FBI agent says in the report, “The minute we put the [Steele election reporting] in there, it goes from what you’d expect the FBI to be collecting in a counterintelligence context to direct allegations about collusion with the Trump campaign.”
