Russbots at it again:

Consistent with past Russian activity, they attacked moderate politicians as a method of bolstering more polarizing candidates. Recently, Vice President Biden has been the most frequent target of this strategy, as seen in dozens of tweets such as, “Joe Biden is damaging Obama’s legacy with his racism and stupidity!” and “Joe Biden doesn’t deserve our votes!”

Sorry Josh, Dems already tried that once. It failed. That dog don't hunt no more...

"Let us turn to the role of the media in reporting alleged Russian interference in the US electoral process. Mainstream journalists have called Trump a puppet of Russia, a modern version of the Manchurian Candidate. Others have criticized the media for accepting unsubstantiated claims about Russian influence, and reporting such claims as facts. Norman Soloman and Serge Halimi, for example, stated that press reporting on this issue amounts to a mass hysteria reminiscent of the McCarthy era, while Seymour Hersh called the media reporting on Russia 'outrageous'. What is your view of this situation?

Chomsky: "My guess is that most of the world is collapsing in laughter. Suppose all the charges are true, I mean every single one, it is so amateurish by US standards that you can hardly even laugh..."

Where in the Mueller report does it confirm Russian collusion? Which indictments support that allegation? You might want to send that info to Adam Schiff, he must have missed it since his impeachment hearings are focused on other things.

He found no conspiracy, as that term is used in the criminal statutes.  But he found instances of contact and cooperation.  The Stone conviction was a result of that.

'Standing With Bernie Because Bernie Stands With Us': Iowa's Largest Progressive Group Endorses Sanders

With only about two months left before Iowa's first-in-the-nation 2020 caucuses, the political arm of the state's largest grassroots progressive group endorsed Sen. Bernie Sanders for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination on Monday.

"From standing with us on strike lines with fast food workers to touring rural Iowa plagued by factory farms, Bernie has helped build the political revolution we've been building for decades. And we could not be more excited to have him build it with us in Iowa in 2020," said the Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement (CCI) Action Fund.

The Iowa CCI Action Fund plans to formally voice support for Sanders (I-Vt.) at an endorsement rally and Medicare for All action at its headquarters in Des Moines on Thursday. The decision to back his campaign for the Democratic nomination followed a seven-month endorsement process.....

Undemocratic Dems Raise the Bar to Exclude Tulsi Gabbard from Debates

Riding the Fence on Medicare for All Isn’t Smart Politics

quote:

Most strikingly, earlier this week, Sen. Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign died on the vine. The major obstacle preventing Harris’s campaign from ever achieving liftoff was that she built her career from prosecutor to city district attorney to state attorney general as a tough-on-crime Democrat in California. In the post–Black Lives Matter era (and one in which leftist Twitter users were constantly calling her a cop, which apparently bothered campaign staffers), the image Harris had cultivated became a political liability.

But the public’s trust in Harris was shaken for another reason: her flip-flopping on Medicare for All.

Harris announced her candidacy on a Friday in January 2019. On the next Monday, she suggested at a CNN town hall event that she agreed with Sen. Bernie Sanders — whose 2017 Medicare for All bill she co-sponsored — that all private health insurance should be eliminated and replaced with a universal public program.

“I believe the solution, and I actually feel very strongly about this, is that we need to have Medicare for all. That’s just the bottom line,” she said. Referring to the private health industry, she added, “Let’s eliminate all of that. Let’s move on.”

Strong stuff. But facing intense criticism for these remarks from billionaires like Howard Schultz and Michael Bloomberg, Harris’s campaign immediately recanted. By the end of Tuesday, her campaign press secretary and a top adviser had both assured the media that Harris was open to keeping private insurance.

quote:

Warren’s Fancy M4A Footwork

Grabbing fewer headlines this week was Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s recent dip in the polls. In September, Warren was hailed as the race’s new front-runner after a surge in support that month. But any front-runner has a target on their back, and her opponents quickly found her weak spot.

While Warren had avowed support for Sanders’s Medicare for All plan since her campaign launch, she tended to elide details, either referring people to Sanders’s plan without getting into the weeds herself or reducing Medicare for All to a “framework” that lacked specifics. And there was one detail in particular that she was clearly uncomfortable embracing: the inevitability of a middle-class tax hike.

Sanders has been consistent on this point, clearly explaining that a few people’s taxes will go up, but overall costs will go down, while claims denials and medical debt will become a thing of the past. But for her part, when asked if she would raise taxes, Warren assiduously avoided this direct explanation.

On the debate stage in October, Pete Buttigieg, whose “Medicare for All Who Want It” plan amounts to a public option with a continued role for private insurance, accused Warren of evasiveness on the tax question. Warren responded that under her plan, taxes “will not go up for middle-class families. And I will not sign a bill into law that raises their costs.”

Without attacking Warren, Sanders then responded by separating taxes and costs: even if taxes go up, costs will go down. “The tax increase they pay will be substantially less — substantially less than what they were paying for premiums and out-of-pocket expansions,” he said.

A moderator asked Warren, “Will you acknowledge what the senator just said about taxes going up?” She would not.

It is possible that the Dem race could come down to one of the following three tickets.

The Democrats will pay attention to demographics and unity trying to balance with VP what they need:

You could see younger-older; left-right; male-female and racial diversity.

It is possible to imagine:

Biden-Harris

Sanders-Harris (a very different ticket to the first)

and Warren-Booker

A more inspired option could be Sanders - Stacey Abrams

Michael Moriarity

My preference would be Bernie Sanders / Nina Turner. She is very smart, a powerful speaker, and would scare the shit out of the elites. They would pray every day for Bernie to stay in good health.

'Not A Left Party': AOC Calls The Democratic Party a 'Center-Conservative Party'

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/not-a-left-party-aoc-calls-the-d...

"The Democratic Party is not a left party,' Ocasio Cortez said. 'The Democratic Party is a center or center-Conservative party.' We can't even get a floor vote on Medicare For All, not even a floor vote that gets voted down. So this is not a left party. There are a lot of true believers that we can 'capitalism' our way out of poverty in the Democratic Party. If anything that's probably the majority.' The comments echoed an argument Ocasio-Cortez made earlier this month when she called the Democratic Party, 'too big of a tent.' 'In any other country, Joe Biden and I would not be in the same party, but in America we are,' she said. 'They let anybody the cat dragged in call themselves a progressive."

Sound familiar?

Sean in Ottawa

The reason for this is of course that the US is not a centre country but a right wing one. The global centre and its centre are in two different places. Nobody in their politics seems prepared to say this directly. For this reason the Democratic party which is the left in an American context is centre right. Parts of it are actually left in a global context like Sanders and AOC.

This problem exists in Canada as well. People redefine the centre to suit themselves and invariably claim to be there no matter how much to the left or right thay actually are when given context.

Is Biden's firewall starting to crumble?

Quote:
Dalhi Myers, a black woman elected to South Carolina's Richland County Council in 2016, announced Wednesday that she is switching her support in the 2020 Democratic primary from former Vice President Joe Biden to Sen. Bernie Sanders because of the latter's willingness to fight for the most vulnerable and his potential strength in a general election battle against President Donald Trump.

...

Just last month, Myers joined more than a dozen other South Carolina elected officials in endorsing Biden as "the only candidate with the broad and diverse coalition of support we need to win."

But Myers told AP she no longer believes that is the case.

...

By her own account, Myers is no progressive firebrand—but she said she is "voting what I think is best for all of us, not just me."

"I'm a 50-year-old-black woman, and I tend to be middle of the road," Myers said. "I'm not a left-wing liberal. I'm not even a left-wing Democrat. But I am a realist."

Just a question -- as we can all see that Biden is fading fast. Do you think even part of this is a successful Trump attack or do you think that it is something else?

I think it could be both. The Trump attack is backfiring on Trump (perhaps) but it may have done the damage he wanted to cause to Biden. I also think that recently we have seen some things divide the nominees and people are moving away from a compromise middle candidate for a middle that does not exist. I see at the same time tremendous momentum for Sanders who is the opposite.

The question is if Sanders takes the front for a time, will Trump attack him? Could Trump be hoping Sanders wins and be saving his anti Sanders campaign for later? This could be a bad strategy if Trump in the end cannot beat Sanders but the fact that he is holding fire more than he is at some of the others suggests that he may think he can beat him, even though the polls suggest otherwise.

I think Sanders does have the best shot at beating Trump and this is despite the predictable campaign that will come against him. I think that Trump and the tea party has further polarized a field that was moving in that direction. Nobody wants a change/hope campaign now. They want something so real that nobody has to label it as "real change."

Nobody is convincing people who are not already convinced and there is no middle poll. What there is now is a competition to inspire the people that agree with you to come out. I do not think Biden can do that.

I actually don't think so. I think Sanders is a nightmare for Trump.

Trump will try to portay Sanders as an extremist but I think Sanders could turn the tables back on Trump pointing out how Trump is the extreme one. Sanders also can defeat the notion that Trumpions love about anti-semitism meaning the same as opposition to Israel's behaviour.

Both Sanders and Trump are outside the mainstream and a Sanders ticket could force people to choose and they just might prefer him.

So we still don't have any results from the Iowa Caucus. Ridiculous! So instead of the talk about the winner having momentum going into New Hampshire, the talk is going to be around how messsed up the process was for the Iowa Democratic Caucuses? You don't think that has the potential to open wounds and feelings of being wronged that will undermine the fight against Trump? Could this process have been set up to deliberately undermine any momentum the Sanders campaign would have otherwise received from tonight?

I think perhaps it's time for the left to ditch the Democratic Party altogether, and join/form one that can run a proper election process in all states. There's absolutely no excuse for this.

Clearly, the main loser in this debacle is the ascendant Sanders, losing momentum and changing the narrative, as you describe.
Who benefits?. Trump, the Republicans, the security state, and those Democratic elite and their backers who see Sanders as a bigger threat to their interests than Trump.

Though speculation and investigation on the possibility of sabotage  does not constitute conspiracy theory (and thankfully the "Putin did it" meme has not, yet, gained traction for this), until credible evidence shows otherwise Hanlon's Razor is still my guidance in this fiasco:

I do not even think that we can discount accident either. Much of what they are doing appears to invovle new and previously untested coding (in a real environment). I do not think there is reasonable evidence yet to presume that the only options are stupidity or a consipracy within or without the party.

Without the results, I would be cautious about suggesting winners and losers. If Sanders wins, then yes, he would have suffered due to this. But if it turns out he was second, then he could do as well in this cloudy situation than if results had been properly available.

As far as losers, I think the clear loser here is this whole caucus process which is not particularly adhering to democratic standards -- even the low standards widely accepted in the US.

Left Turn Left Turn's picture

Iowa Caucus Results (From the Associated Press via a Google Search, 62% results):

Associated Press wrote:

Pete Buttigieg 26.9% 10 Delegates
Bernie Sanders 25.1% 10 Delegates
Elizabeth Warren 18.3% 4 Delegates
Joe Biden 15.6% 0 Delegates
Amy Klobuchar 12.6% 0 Delegates
Andrew Yang 1% 0 Delegates

The big winners so far are Bittigieg and Sanders, who are tied for first place with 10 delegates each. The big loser is Biden, who doesn't have any delegates yet.

I'm a Sanders supporter, and this result is good for him.

The other big loser appears to be the app they're using to conduct this Caucus process Sure took them long enough to cough up even partial results.

The big question is whether this result will help Buttigeg continue to gain votes from Biden in upcoming states. As a Sanders supporter, my hope is that we can get enough of a split in the centrist vote between Buttigeg and Biden to allow Sanders to come up the middle and win.
