There was once a test that claimed to predict how well kids would do in life by offering one marshmallow right away or two if the kid could wait. It was considered brilliant for years and a part of pop psych culture.
Eventually it was debunked by someone coming along and saying effectively that the marshmallow test is a symptom. Kids who are deprived tend to take the bird in the hand due to the experience of not being able to trust the one in the bush. The test really was found (recently) to be a good test for the trust the kids had in the security of what they have and saving and the feeling of deprivation.
It seems the test also predicted how well they would do becuase kids who are deprived have lower sense of security, trust saving less and that deprivation and insecurity are not recipes to be successful after all.
