Backache

I only get this in cold weather (starting in late Autumn, where we are now) and as you probably know, it is very humid here. Of course the Prairies, not to mention the Far North, get much colder, but many places there are far drier.

In my case, mostly lower back, which we call "mal des reins", but there are no symptoms that would link it to actual kidneys.

Got a médecin de famille?

Sorry to hear that. I have some mild arthritic pain in my wrist that started tonight. I'm assuming the humidity so I hope that is the issue for you too.

Unionist, no I don't any more. He retired. Trying to find another, but don't want to accept someone assigned at random who would be a bad fit. I'd just as soon go to the CLSC, or something else public or community that still exists.

You don't play around with problems like that. You don't think it is your kidneys but it could be your kidneys. You could have a kidney infection. You could drink lots of cranberry juice in case that is your problem. If it isn't the cranberry juice isn't going to hurt you unless you don't like cranberry juice. If you don't like cranberry juice then you could drink lemon juice or anything else that is really acidic to kill the bacteria if that is what is causing you so much pain.

I have been taking cranberry extract and pills. I feel much better now, but I realise that I have to keep an eye on it.. Thanks.

I don't think CLSC's have physicians on staff any more. You might have to go to a GMF or something similar. Even then, if you're picky about family doctors, you might wait forever.

I've never used it - but maybe try Info-Santé? Can't hurt. They might give you a notion of where to turn.

And with all due respect to folk remedies, don't.

Actually, yes you do, and it is not a folk remedy. It is extremely important to go to see a doctor. There are many causes of pain in the kidney area and some of them are very serious. That is why it is so important to go to a doctor right away.

UTI infections involving the kidneys can be started on with high acidity drinks like cranberry juice before you make it to the doctors office. Cranberry juice is very safe to drink and the acidity fries the bacteria which causes many cases of UTI's if that is what the problem is. A UTI that hits the kidneys usually requires antibiotics.

There are many many different things which can cause pain in the lower back region. It is best to get it checked out by a medical doctor.

I have to agree with Misfit on this. If the pain continues even at a reduced amount it is better to be safe than sorry. See a doctor. As to a family doctor I think there is a list you get on. I do have a family doctor at my local CLSC but the last two times I went I saw a nurse practioner. The doctor just poked her head in and signed prescriptions. I liked my doctor but I also like the nurse practioner and she was able to talk more with me.

See if you can get a nurse practioner instead of a doctor. It might be easier and they are very good.

Many docs agree with cranberry extract; it isn't woo, though obviously it can't cure everything. Alas, a dear friend is under the spell of a (well-paid) practicioner of woo. This friend has the same educational level as I do. I am furious about the stealth privatisation of medical care here, with the concumitant overprescription of drugs, but she is a very rational person and her spending on woo distresses me greatly. Specialists in that are experts in creating a persona, or aura. At least that one won't waste time on me, as she knows I don't have the funds for her seminars.

Without starting a new thread, what has happened to healthcare in Quebec? Is there a shortage of doctors? I scanned some articles which indicate that there are ridiculously long waiting lists to find a doctor. What is going on?

Info Santé is terrific, since it is so hard to see a doctor. I would def check it out if you can, that's not something to ignore.

Definitely make sure you don't get a full blown kidney infection - that is so very painful. I hope you feel better soon, lagatta.

A couple of decades ago Quebec decided to buy out a lot of doctors to get them to retire. Within years we had a shortage. It was a means of cutting expenses. Also, Quebec doctors see fewer patients.

Thank you, Pondering.
