Green Party Leadership Candidate Plan To Overtake The NDP With "Eco-Socialism"

Alex Tyrrell, the eco-socialist leader of the Green Party of Quebec, has announced his candidacy to lead the federal Green party

Inspired in part by the success of progressive environmentalist movements south of the border, Tyrrell thinks it’s time for a shift to the left in Canada — what he calls eco-socialism.

“The Green New Deal that I’m presenting is based on an analysis of the various Green New Deals that have been put forward, including the one by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez,” Tyrrell said.

He thinks the Greens can overtake the NDP, and eventually the Liberals, by galvanizing the left-leaning vote through a more proactive agenda on climate change and social justice.

“I hope that Canadians are ready for a certain amount of change. They can count on me to deliver progressive change on the environment and on social justice if I’m given the chance,” he said.

Tyrrell wants to put an end to extraction and his agenda is to halt fossil fuel and mining activities such as the Alberta oilsands and Teck's $88.5-million expansion in British Columbia “as quickly as possible.”

“What we’re calling for is a 10-year mobilization to eliminate our consumption of fossil fuels, so it’s a very quick energy transition that we’re talking about,” he said.

Tyrrell thinks Canada needs to implement a “Second World War-scale” mobilization to save the environment. “We were able to reorientate the economy towards war. We should be able to do the same thing for the environment,” he said.

voice of the damned

Tyrrell wants to see more decision-making in the hands of Indigenous people over their land. He wants Indigenous veto power over projects, such as in the Wet’suwet’en chiefs versus Coastal GasLink dispute.

From an ecosocialist perspective, Horgan has recently situated himself on the wrong side of that issue. I guess polls in the next few days will let us know if this has left him vulnerable to being "overtaken" by parties promoting a greener agenda.

The NDP does have a risk of this.

It's a good strategy-it is also the exact approach Elizabeth May spent her entire tenure as leader preventing the GPC from adopting.

It will be interesting to see, if Tyrell's campaign gets any sort of traction, if May and the rest of the GPC right wing go all out to try and stop the guy, and who they'd try to recruit to be the anti-Tyrell candidate.  My theory is that the "stop-Tyrell" candidate would probably be Jenica Atwin, the MP from New Brunswick, whose views seem close to or slightly to the right of May.  Making Atwin the "stop Tyrell-stop change" candidate would also allow the GPC right to argue that it was sexist to vote for a candidate who challenges May's essentially small-c conservative view of what the GPC should be about.

Yes, of course, let's ignore the most recent poll that shows Horgan doing quite well, thank you.

and we should ignore polls like that. The reason is that the damage being done now does not show up immediately.

A more important point is that the NDP is not tolerated when it is hypocritical. Other parties are tolerated for that but not the NDP. Historically parties of the left are always held to a higher standard. This is becuase their supporters demand more of them and their opponents fear them more so they are continually attacked...

All social-democratic principles are wedded to eco principles now. The NDP ignores this at their peril. This is with respect to both support and practical purpose. No point investing in your society and then dumping it over a cliff.
