Mohammed Abu Ghosh says that his daughter’s arrest has been even more difficult for him than his son’s death. He casts a wistful glance at a huge photo of Mayes’ pretty face and falls silent. A pendant in the shape of Palestine is hanging around her neck. Mayes, his eldest, has been in Israeli custody for five months.

Mohammed has known his share of suffering: His son Hussein was killed at the age of 17 after perpetrating a stabbing attack in the settlement of Beit Horon in which Shlomit Krigman was killed in 2016. Mohammed’s nephew, also named Hussein, was killed at the age of 19 on the first anniversary of his son’s death, in a car-ramming attack in the settlement of Ma’aleh Mikhmash. And Mohammed’s son Suleiman, now 17, was twice arrested last year and held in administrative detention – incarceration without trial – for four months each time.

y name is Yaakov Sharett. I am 92 years old. I happen to be my father’s son for which I am not responsible. So this is how it is.”

Yaakov chuckles and looks up from under a woolly hat towards a photograph of his father - proud in collar and tie - on his study wall in Tel Aviv. Moshe Sharett was a founding father of Israel, its first foreign minister and its second prime minister from 1954-55.

But I hadn’t come to talk about Yaakov’s father. I had come with photographs of a well which was once located in an Arab village called Abu Yahiya, situated in the Negev region in what is now southern Israel.

Palestinian activists launched a campaign on Tuesday to release 81-year old Fuad al-Shobaki, the oldest Palestinian prisoner currently held in an Israeli jail, local media reported.

Shobaki was a senior general in the Palestinian Authority's security forces, a senior Fatah leader and also a financial consultant for late PA President Yasser Arafat.

In 2002, the PA arrested him on charges that he had masterminded the Karen A, a ship that carried weapons from Iran at the height of the Second Intifada and was seized by the Israeli marine forces.

At a talk I delivered in Northern England in March 2018, I proposed that the best response to falsified accusations of antisemitism, which are often lobbed against pro-Palestinian communities and intellectuals everywhere, is to draw even closer to the Palestinian narrative.

In fact, my proposal was not meant to be a sentimental response in any way.

Jewish and democratic – that’s ostensibly the source of the problem, of the paradox. You can’t be both a cat and a dog. But the current era, which is a time of miracles and wonders, is raising the possibility that you can be both, that there’s no real contradiction there. To continue to insist that these are two different, conflicting things that don’t go together – a Jewish state and a democratic state – is simply not to go with the flow. Everyone who does do that, however, knows that in the sort of Zen Buddhist void in which Israel is floating, no hard and fast meaning is actually attributed to the terms themselves. All is diffuse, amorphous, inchoate – it’s all fun. People who go with the flow know that this dilemma is a thing of the past and that now the State of Israel and its citizens have no problem being democratic and Jewish in the same breath, or being anything else that they may want to be, for that matter. Each of these terms has undergone a dazzling process of flexibility, while becoming empty of content. No contradiction is conceivable between nothing and zilch.

Mohammad Danfiri stands at the edge of his Bedouin family’s sheep enclosure in the Negev Desert, looking out at a pair of cell phone towers at the top of a nearby hill. They are situated in an open spot between one end of his village and the other - an area, he explains, where an extension of Israel’s major eastern highway will be built.

A row of houses stands about 60 metres from the towers, where highway plans have been approved. But the Israeli government is advancing plans to evict not only the residents closest to the planned road.

The occupation. A phrase commonly used when speaking about the injustices taking place in Palestine. It is a phrase that limits the discussion to a small part of Palestine and to only a portion of the Palestinian people. The occupation only exists in the two small areas that we are permitted to state that human rights abuses take place. There are checkpoints and road-blocks and a dual system of justice, one for Jews and another for Palestinians. The Jewish residents in the “Occupied Territories” are called “settlers,” and unlike other Israeli Jews, they are “illegal” and the places in which they live are known as “illegal settlements.”

Fear is the most primal defensive instinct, but fear can also be exploited as a tool of control, leading people to act with thought and emotion so impaired that, to borrow from the above definition of psychosis, contact with external reality is lost. Colonial Salem had witches; Spanish Inquisitors had heretics; McCarthyism had communists; and Zionism has antisemites.

Unlike witches, antisemitism is real, making it all the more tragic that Zionism’s ‘high priests’ manipulate it to keep the ‘flock’ dependent. On behalf of the Israeli state, self-appointed ‘representatives’, such as the UK’s Board of Deputies, manufacture threats from the very people who pose none, and support many who do — an especially dangerous game when actual violence against Jews and other targeted groups is on the rise.

A Palestinian who was shot four years ago in the head by Israeli soldiers is being called in for interrogation with no reason provided, Haaretz reported yesterday.

The family house of 21-year-old Khalil Mahmoud from the occupied East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Issawiya was raided last Thursday by Israeli forces who tried to arrest him.

Khalil told Haaretz a large number of Israeli soldiers “maybe 30” wearing border force uniforms – crowded into the house while his father Ahmed, a house painter was at work.

There were more soldiers in civilian clothes stationed outside, he added.

UMM AL-FAHM, Israel — Leila Jabarin looked every inch the matriarch of the Muslim family that surrounded her on a recent morning, encircled by some of her 36 grandchildren in a living room rich with Arabic chatter and the scent of cardamom-
flavored coffee.

But Jabarin, her hair covered with a brown headscarf, was talking to visitors in Hebrew, not Arabic, and telling a story that not even her seven children knew until they were grown. She was born not Leila Jabarin, but Helene Berschatzky, not a Muslim but a Jew. Her history began not in this Arab community where she has made her life with the Palestinian man she fell in love with six decades ago, but in a Nazi concentration camp where her Jewish parents had to hide their newborn from the Nazis.

The Trump administration’s Middle East peace plan brings with it good news and bad news. It will put the final nail in the coffin of that walking corpse known as the two-state solution – that’s the good news. It will also create a new reality in which international law, the resolutions of the international community and especially international institutions are meaningless.

Filled with the hope that the U.S. president instills in us, in his great mercy, let’s begin with the good news. Once his proposal is made public, no one will ever be able to talk with any seriousness about the two-state solution. It was probably never born, but now it is clearly dead. There is no Palestinian state and there never will be.

When Israeli prime ministers are in trouble, facing difficult elections or a corruption scandal, the temptation has typically been for them to unleash a military operation to bolster their standing. In recent years, Gaza has served as a favourite punching bag. Benjamin Netanyahu is confronting both difficulties at once: a second round of elections in September that he may struggle to win; and an attorney general who is widely expected to indict him on corruption charges shortly afterwards. https://mondoweiss.net/2019/06/forget-century-annexation/

resident Trump will join Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday to announce his Middle East peace plan. The announcement comes not long before Israel’s third election in the past year, on March 2. Details of the plan haven’t been released yet, but most analysts expect it to continue Trump’s policy of recognizing Israeli annexation of territories it occupied in 1967, while excluding Palestinians from the process entirely.

The American administration’s plan branded as the “Deal of the Century” is more like Swiss cheese, with the cheese being offered to the Israelis and the holes to the Palestinians. There are many ways to end the occupation, but the only legitimate options are those based on equality and human rights for all. This is why the current plan which legitimizes, entrenches and even expands the scope of Israel’s human rights abuses, perpetuated now for over 52 years, is utterly unacceptable.

January 28, 2020 could very well go down as the most mind-boggling day in the history of Israel and its relations with the United States. Against the backdrop of a White House audience of enthusiastic cheerleaders, in a ceremony that seemed to fuse a Donald Trump rally with a religious Zionist gala, the president pronounced a dramatic, pro-Israel shift in U.S. foreign policy and laid down a lopsided peace plan that exceeds any rational Israeli’s wildest dreams.

I think this plan is oversold. It is not a deal. It is a conspiracy. It is not "of the century." It is a political con set up by two cons at the end of their game. What does it change? It greenlights what Israel was going to do anyway which is steal more land. It exposes most countries in the world for not standing up to Trump (only Turkey and Iran spoke strongly in favour of the people of Palestine). This does not mean much as most in the world are wary enough of Trump to keep their heads down even as they wish that November will come soon.

I hardly think that history will make much of this deal other than the histories of the Trump and Netenyahu administrations. It is a step on the ongoing trail of misery of Palestine but not a great deal more significant than the others. It is a loss of land. It is a loss of American prestige but how much of that did they have anyway? Ultimately it changes little. The State of Israel has stolen enough land that it has made a two state solution impossible and by so doing made a democratic Israel equally impossible but this is not an event but more of a long process. The world not standing up for the vulnerable is also a process rather than an event.

It is depressing but there is nothing new.

I have lived my whole life under the Israeli occupation. I was born under occupation, went to school and university under occupation, and became a surgeon under the occupation. The occupation is a cruel reality that permeates every corner of our physical and psychological beings. For so many years, I was genuinely hopeful that it would end soon. I was hopeful that after all this suffering, there would be closure. I hoped that our children, Israeli and Palestinian, would not grow up to be occupiers or occupied, oppressors nor oppressed, but rather free, dignified siblings living in their beautiful Motherland. Now, I not so hopeful anymore. I am a father. My son is six years old. He does not comprehend the reality of the occupation yet. He finds the guns, the gear and the strange language of the soldiers amusing. https://forward.com/opinion/439074/trumps-deal-of-the-century-is-a-death...

"Like much of what Trump has done during his time in office, this proposal says the quiet part out loud. So obvious is the contempt for Palestinians, so blatant is the racism, that even people who previously supported proposals based on the same dehumanizing principle are growing visibly uncomfortable.

...in the final analysis the Trump plan is born of the same bankrupt principle underlying all other American and western proposals regarding Palestine for the last hundred years: the rights of Palestinians, both individually and collectively, are inferior to the rights of Jewish Israelis in the land."

The US Department of Education has opened two separate investigations into the University of California at Los Angeles because of events that discussed advocacy for Palestinian rights.

The investigations have been prompted by complaints filed by Israel lobby groups, which allege that Palestine-related education or advocacy on campus is inherently anti-Semitic and discriminates against Jewish students.

They follow US President Donald Trump’s executive order, signed in December, which allows mere accusations of anti-Semitism against campus critics of Israel to result in lengthy inquisitions by the government.

There is a massive amount of self censureship to avoid these accusations which are meant to silence criticism. I don't think I have to source this since people have spoken about this for years. I will just leave my belief here that the issue is not just about those who come out with an opinion being silenced but also those who do not speak up for fear of this happeneing. I will try to source this if people want to challenge me....

Last week, an impeached US president revealed his plan for Israeli-Palestinian peace, with an indicted Israeli prime minister at his side. Yet far from being a “historic” peace plan, Donald Trump’s initiative is merely the repackaging of ideas from previous failed negotiations, including from the days in which I served as a legal adviser to the Palestinian negotiating team.

Gideon Levy: “This is their third Nakba. After losing most of their land, property and dignity in the first and their liberty in the second, now comes the third to crush whatever is left of their hope. They’ve tried everything. Diplomatic struggle and armed struggle, nonviolent protest and economic boycott. Nothing has helped. The ‘deal of the century’ only reconfirms what was known: The evil thrive, this time in a particularly extreme edition of one-sidedness, racism and arrogance. The mighty take all. All. The Palestinians get a caricature of an independent state after many years, if ever, and only as long as they agree to a series of degrading surrender conditions that even the lowest collaborator would never agree to. Israel, on the other hand, gets almost everything, and right away.”

Israeli soldiers shoot children. Sometimes they wound them and sometimes they kill them. Sometimes the children wind up brain dead, sometimes disabled. Sometimes the children have thrown rocks at the soldiers, sometimes Molotov cocktails. Sometimes by chance they wind up in the middle of a confrontation. They almost never put the soldiers’ lives in danger. Sometimes the soldiers intentionally shoot at the children, sometimes by mistake. Sometimes they aim at the children’s heads or the upper body, and sometimes they shoot in the air and miss, hitting the children in the head. On Wednesday, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights released a list of companies with ties to the settlements. We knew we didn’t have to wait long to hear the list besmirched with that go-to word when it comes to any form of Palestinian resistance, however nonviolent: terrorism.

We Palestinians are used to being called terrorists. It’s bad enough on its own. But perhaps even worse is the tendency in the right wing pro-Israel camp to designate as terrorism any form of Palestinian resistance, from a poster to a refusal to purchase goods to a list. It’s not only inaccurate and racist; it de-incentivizes Palestinian non-violence, and conveys the message that from the point of view of these advocates, there’s no difference at all between violent terrorism and nonviolent resistance.
