The premier you don’t know, but should
In the nearly two years since forming an apparently shaky Orange/Green alliance, Horgan has had to manage a raft of political challenges — the TMX pipeline, money laundering in B.C. casinos, alleged embezzlement in the B.C. legislature, skyrocketing housing costs, and choosing to continue a very controversial hydro dam project. B.C. premiers with much more secure majorities typically begin to fall in popularity quite quickly, even without the burden of the battles than Horgan has already faced. Horgan has climbed to become one of the most popular premiers in Canada. What’s going on?

Yes, he and Alberta’s NDP premier Rachel Notley are sharply divided over the TMX pipeline expansion. But the reasons are more local than ideological. Each share a deep commitment to carbon reduction action by government, each has taken strong measures to diversify their province away from non-renewable energy.
The pipeline battle is a thorn in each of their sides, but it casts in shadow a much larger strategic agreement: progressives in government need to find a bridge between pro and anti-carbon voters.
It is, of course also a national challenge, but Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appears to be failing at his attempt to ride both horses. He has gone from having at least the private support of his carbon tax, in the large provinces, to having a thoroughly hostile Doug Ford and skeptical partners in Quebec Premier François Legault and Horgan. The opposing premiers angrily cite the federal Liberals’ “take it or leave it” approach to their climate change and carbon tax agenda.
Ottawa and the provinces must find bridges to shared climate change goals. Canada cannot hope to meet its Paris Accord targets without common approaches, at a minimum, in B.C., Alberta, Ontario and Quebec. Those provinces are where 85 per cent of Canadians live. They also generate even more of the nation’s GDP and carbon emissions.
As Horgan said in a keynote address on Friday to the national gathering of progressives of all stripes — the annual Progress Summit of the Broadbent Institute, “We need to work together to build a path to a cleaner, better future, with a low-carbon economy that creates opportunities for all while protecting our clean air, water and land …”
A nation proud of its history of mutual accommodation and compromise needs more leaders determined to build bridges across the climate divide. If John Horgan can survive a run-off election, perhaps within months, having seen success in managing the jobs/climate divide at home, he could be well set to help lead that national debate.

So our current provincial government is taking actions. They tried to close the taxation loophole exploited by foreign buyers and satellite families with the speculation tax. They brought the Land Owner Transparency Act. And they keep calling for support from the federal government to crack down money laundering. These are things that the BC Liberal party had never bothered to do during their 16 years in charge of British Columbia.

B.C. has been plagued by a series of mill curtailments and closures over the past few months, affecting nearly 6,000 workers at at 25 different mills across the province.According to the companies, the closures are due to low lumber prices, high operating costs and dwindling timber supplies.
But Liberal forestry critic John Rustad said there are policies the government can introduce to the help the struggling industry.

UNDRIP means this project needs to be at least put on hold while meaningful consultation takes place. If the company continues to build while talks are happening then it is not reconciliation but further colonization.

It's really sad that Horgan failed to take leadership himself. Things only seemed to calm down once former NDP MP Nathan Cullen was dispatched to help resolve tensions. Let's hope this comes to a peaceful resolution.

NDP’s new ICBC—so smart and so much better, only B.C. Liberals and ambulance chasers can hate it
Of the many smart and progressive transformative changes introduced by the Horgan government, the new “care-based” no-fault ICBC system should prove to be one of the NDP’s proudest and most popular legacies.
Kudos to the premier, Attorney General David Eby, and all who had a hand in that commendable initiative to get all B.C. taxpayers out of the mangled wreck that the NDP inherited from the B.C. Liberals.
That old ICBC jalopy that had served British Columbians so well for 40 years, before Christy Clark’s crew drove it off the cliff on their 2017 re-election joy-ride, was simply not salvageable.
It was a write-off: structurally unsound, smashed to bits and beyond repair due to the B.C. Liberals’ wanton negligence and gross mishandling. [See related stories.]
As we all know, ICBC was the victim of the Liberals’ chicanery, duplicity, and incompetence. It was buried in debt from years of mismanagement, rising claims costs, and unconscionably high legal costs that threatened to crush ratepayers with massive premium hikes.
All of which called for a replacement vehicle, if you will, either through some form of no-fault public auto system for basic insurance; or through a different tort model that envisioned more privatization, as advocated by Andrew Wilkinson, the trial lawyers, and the Insurance Bureau of Canada.
Thank God the NDP made the right choice and opted to replace the old ICBC with a brand new no-fault public auto insurance vehicle.
One that builds on the successful models in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and to a lesser extent, Quebec.
One that will soon be the best in class in Canada, and leave Alberta’s increasingly creaky private auto insurance system choking in our dust.

Courtenay-Comox MLA takes reins as parliamentary secretary for seniors
Courtenay-Comox MLA Ronna-Rae Leonard has a new role.
Premier John Horgan has appointed her as parliamentary secretary for seniors.
“Ronna-Rae Leonard has a strong record of getting results for her community,” Horgan said. “I know she will work diligently with the minister of health to make life better for seniors in our province.”
As parliamentary secretary for seniors, Leonard will work with Adrian Dix, Minister of Health, to improve and strengthen services for seniors, and ensure they receive dignified and quality care.
Leonard assumes responsibility for seniors from Anne Kang, who recently became minister of citizens’ services. Kang retains responsibility for multiculturalism.
