This is a meaningless if it is meant solely as an anti-Assad illustration. With or without Assad's brutality (as one of the few world dictators the US doesn't support) civil wars and proxy wars result in massive casualties irrespective of leadership.

Assad is no Lincoln but under Lincoln 625,000 died about 2% of the US population, more than it lost in 1st and 2nd WW's combined.

Without the support of the US and its middle east allies, and the influx of jihadists as a the result of the US from its previous destructions of Iraq, Libya (with massive and continuing death, misery and chaos) including creation of Al Qaeda from the jihadists it recruited in its anti-Soviet Afghanistan war (also in continuing chaos and death) the situation would be far different.

As a pure civil war it would have been over very quickly with a fraction of the death and destruction that it is now experiencing. The original civil protests (which had many legitimate grievances against Assad) were violently suppressed, as has happened repeatedly in US-sponsored dictatorships with nary a whisper of "humanitarian intervention".  As a state not in the fold of US repressive regimes, the US and its allies have intervened resulting in the current body count, destruction, as is the typical US regime change pattern. Russia forces entered Syria 4 years after the start at the invitation of the Syrian government.

Not Since World War One Have the Turks Been Defeated on a Middle Eastern Battlefield - Erdogan Calling Putin...

https://twitter.com/bears_with/status/1231838776416231424

"The Russian and Syrian general staffs and their men have been doing to the Turks what no one has achieved in the Middle East since 1917. So the Sultan has called the Tsar - three times this month so far; in January, once by telephone, twice in face-to-face meetings, and twice by telephone in December. Every time the telephone rings, it is, as the Kremlin communique doesn't fail to mention, 'at the Turkish side's initiative'...

Erdogan has miscalculated his ability to hold on to Idlib, and as the scale of his defeat has materialized, he has become hysterical. The loss of Idlib city and most of the province would be a strategic defeat for Erdogan, but he doesn't know where to draw a red-line his troops can defend. It is unlikely that Turkey will be ready to expel Assad's troops from their positions on a large scale as Erdogan threatens. Most likely, this means the Turks will react more harshly to Assad's attempts to move forward...

The Threat Of A Russia-Turkey-NATO Hot War Over Idlib Is A Godsend For US Foreign Policy

"Turkey is calling for NATO's protection after 33 of its soldiers were killed in an apparent Syrian airstrike in Idlib, allegedly while fighting in terrorist ranks. In the regional chaos that ensues, only one player stands to gain. Speculation over what's to come next has seen #article 5 trending on Twitter in the hours following the attacks, after Omer Celik, spokesman for Turkey's ruling AKP party, indicated to reporters in Ankara that he was looking at requesting formal NATO protection against Damascus and, by proxy, the Russian air force.

'We call on NATO to start consultations. This is not [an attack] on Turkey only, it is an attack on the international community. A common reaction is needed. The attack was also against NATO,' Celik told Turkish media. Article 5 of the NATO treaty says an attack on one is an attack on them all. The State Department also condemned the attacks, stating that it stands by its 'NATO ally Turkey..."

Why would you call it Syrian oil, rather than Kurdish oil, since the Kurds are natives of the area and have control of the land?

NDPP

Despite Donald Trump's repeated statements 'we're keeping the oil,'  might makes right or certain relentlessly promoted claims of 'Rojava' neither Trump nor the West's  Kurdish proxies have any right to take oil or facilities belonging to and sitting within the sovereign, internationally recognized territory of the Syrian Arab Republic. Moreover, all attempts by Damascus to negotiate a reasonable solution to this present problem with Kurdish representatives have come to nought chiefly because of the hostile overriding agenda of Washington, Tel Aviv etc. Perhaps this will help with some of the missing bits necessary for a better understanding.

Not a real complicated first step to any solution, it just requires NATO to go home.  We pit people against each other all over the globe and its only for the profit of our billionaires. Western "democracies" are the scourge and if only the voting pubic in Europe and the 5Eyes would demand that the troops come home we would have no such problems.

I fully agree that NATO should disengage, but that would still leave a pretty messy situation. Gulf states and Israel vs Iran, Syria, Hezbollah. I agree that it is a very messy and volatile situation, given all the actors you have mentioned. If Israel did not have NATO to hide behind it might stop air strikes in Syria and who knows if the regional powers were to negotiate they might even find some areas of compromise. But that will never happen when the treaty table is owned by imperialists and divide and conquer is still the winning strategy for them.

Even if I believed this report I would have to say get the fuck out of Syria. Like other states in the Middle East that used an iron fist to keep the Islamic terrorists at bay I am sure that Syria has killed thousands of its people and some of them, many hundreds were likely innocents caught in the civil war, not actual jihadists. I also believe that the majority of those thousands are likely not peaceful people who just want to vote in an election. The part that pisses me off about US "progressives" is that level of state oppression is enough justification to unleash starvation sanctions and the bombing of HUNDREDS of thousands of people and the civic infrastructure that belongs to them not any current government of Syria.

Tell me Josh just what god gave you as an American the right to unleash death and destruction on a people to protect them from themselves?
