NDP BC invades sovereign Wet'suwet'en territory, RCMP arrest defenders

..i remember watching much of the oka invasion on my tv. it was televised. one image that was imprinted on my mind was that of soldiers facing off with warriors. the situation was very intense that could explode at any moment. from out of nowhere came a mohawk matriarch riding a 3 wheeler. she jumped off the machine yelling and swearing. what the fuck is going on was the gist.

..yelling at warriors she ordered them to back off and you saw them meekly slip into the trees. yelling at the soldiers to back the fuck off. the mohawks are a matriarchal society. even after the implementation of the indian act bands..which is male dominated.

..all though it takes a collaborative effort, this whole situation that we see today..the wet'suwet'en struggle, the resistance..originated and continues to be influenced by a matriarch. a matriarch like i described above. i watched the unist'ot'en camp form with tents in the direct path of the pipeline then move when the pipeline path changed. this was what, founded 10 yrs ago. today we see a few buildings and a wonderful healing centre.

..the picture above in #463 Mohawk- Wet'suwet'en alliance, 2 men clasping hands. well the meeting where this pic came from was partially in a video/press conference. you saw these 2 men speak you also saw the direction provided by the matriarch who did not speak.

..so while it's true on the surface you see men speaking, men meeting with ministers it's the matriarchs who are the authority in much of indigenous life. imho.

..healing centre that was built by crowd funding. built as a very positive part of the resistance and back to the land.

I guess it is really hard to wrap ones head around the idea of a sovereign indigenous territory where they make the laws and enforce them.

Sometimes EMS like paramadics and firefighters won't go somewhere without a police escort. I've even heard of it as a clause in their contracts.

What happens if the RCMP agrees and doesn't step foot on the 22,000 square KM of land and the EMS refuse to answer calls on this sovereign land without police services at least available. Would that be a cause for concern?

How does banning RCMP from unceeded territory work with searching for missing and murdered First Nations women?

What if all 634 Nations banned RCMP/Provincial presence across Canada?

The imposed Canadian 'Vichy' regime system set up illegally 'beyond the treaty frontier',  to serve and institutionalize Canadian colonialism in Indigenous administration, has done its dirty work and continues to do so. No surprise to see the Globe pushing this version. Or some here either.

No matter what those administrative units of the Canadian government, the Band Council system think, (the same as their governmental paymasters, surprise, surprise)  the fact remains that pipeline doesn't go through 'their' territories. And those traditional governance representatives of the territories concerned, the only voices relevant or entitled  to pronounce upon it, have done so - and decisively against the pipeline's contemplated despoilation of their hitherto pristeen territories.

Just because your neighbours may wish to profit from  seeing  your property turned over to a dirty and destructive extraction project, doesn't mean you have to agree to it.

The Canary in the Canadian Fossil Fuel Cage

https://ricochet.media/en/2946/wetsuweten-the-canary-in-the-canadian-fos...

"...The era of fossil fuels is drawing to an end and the markets for these resources will plateau or decline by the time any of Canada's pending major fossil fuel projects are completed. Hence such projects no longer make any economic sense. According to the Institute of Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, a cross-section of 33 US publicly held shale oil and gas firms collectively had negative cash flows in the first six months of 2018, with expenses exceeding revenues by $3.9 billion. However, in the fate of the Wet'suwet'en standoff, shouldn't the opening question be whether the Coastal GasLink and LNG Canada project should be built?

The same prospects are no better for the Trans Mountain Pipeline, the Teck Frontier Project, Energy East and tarsands development at large. But now a group of Indigenous people, led by the Wet'suwet'en hereditary chiefs, are forcing us to wonder about the feasibility of all significant future fossil fuel projects - Coastal GasLink, LNG Canada, Trans Mountain, GNL Quebec, Teck Frontier and others to come.."

"So, according to this video tape, the protesters at Tyendinaga, last Monday, had asked to have a meeting with the OPP, CN, the feds and the province, to work out an exit strategy from the [non] blockade if the RCMP withdrew from Wet'suwet'en territory. They never got an answer. For whatever reason, the invitation to meet to discuss and develop a safe exit strategy was ignored."

Seems the obvious explanation of that non-response is that a raid  was already part of the plan and there was no wish to have that final solution derailed by peaceful negotiations as invited by the Tyendinaga.

Tyendinaga Mohawks Say They Have Been Given Midnight Deadline to Clear Camp

https://twitter.com/Gidimten/status/1231756319842897920

"RCMP have been given until midnight...EST to get out of Wet'suwet'en Yintah. Seriously, the RCMP have said they are supposed to leave but they are still doddling around our Yintah."

So, it appears that when you boil it all down, nothing concrete has occurred to meet the necessary preconditions to honourable nation to nation talks repeatedly reiterated by the Wet'suwet'en Hereditary Chiefs. The RCMP is still 'doddling around' Wet'suwet'en territory and Tyendinaga attempts to negotiate an exit strategy with CN and governments have apparently gone unanswered.

Official governmental propaganda now paints the Wet'suwet'en and the protesters as non-responsive and uncooperative and warns police actions are coming. This is the manufacture of consent for the further use of state force, Progressive Canadians must oppose and prevent this latest iteration of a historic continuation of chicanery and dishonourable, sharp tactics in dealings with Indigenous nations.

Wet’suwet’en solidarity protesters set up new Vancouver rail blockade, violating injunction

Two days after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said rail blockades across Canada need to come down, a group of protesters gathered for hours on another major train crossing in East Vancouver.

The demonstrators gathered at the CN Rail tracks near Clark Drive and Venables Street just before noon Sunday, violating an injunction the rail company was granted by the B.C. Supreme Court the last time its tracks were blocked earlier this month....

The continuing arrogance and patronizing colonialist attitudes of the Canadian  governments are outrageous and shocking, especially attempts to manipulate and exploit the urgent necessity of  'reconciliation' to advance an environmentally disastrous pipeline project across  Wet'suwet'en unceded territories. The same will be used to also promote the Trans Mountain pipeline extension across unceded Secwepemc territories.

These are NATIONS -  invaded, occupied and despoiled illegally by Canada, an entity with no lawful jurisdiction in the absence of a treaty of respect and consent authorizing the occupation or  any development by Canada or British Columbia. All Canadians should support honourable nation-to nation talks to resolve these matters, and/or energetic continuing opposition to the use of police and state power to overwhelm and crush the Indigenous nations in resistance. Time for the international community also to step up and halt Justin Trudeau's colonizing, corporatist regime.

Trudeau convenes Incident Response Group amid blockade arrests

quote:

Speaking outside the IRG meeting on Monday, Public Safety Minister Bill Blair said he believed the police of the jurisdiction are "doing their job," adding that the government will "let them continue doing their job."

"We are not in any way compromising our commitment to the reconciliation agenda, but at the same time, the impact of these rail disruptions and the barricades is untenable, it can't continue, it cannot persist, it's absolutely essential that those barricades come down and that rail service be resumed," Blair said.

As the police action continues in Tyendinaga, opposition leaders have also been weighing in on the issue.

Outgoing Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer spoke to Trudeau on the phone on Monday. While the main topic of discussion was Teck Resources Ltd.'s announcement that it is withdrawing its application for an oilsands mine in Alberta, Scheer tied the company's decision to the ongoing rail blockades.

"Mr. Scheer said the Prime Minister’s weakness over the last few weeks has sent a signal to businesses across Canada that the rule of law will not be upheld, court injunctions will not be enforced, and major projects cannot get built," the Conservative Party's readout of the phone call says.

"These blockades are a dress rehearsal for protests against other projects across Canada. Mr. Scheer asked the Prime Minister to take stronger action before these protests shut down the economy completely."

Striking a very different tone, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh expressed his concern about the police action during a press conference about pharmacare on Monday.

"I've been really concerned about the idea that police intervention will deescalate this national crisis, because it's won't. It's not the solution," Singh said.

'Going to get much, much worse': Indigenous Manitobans react to arrests of Mohawk demonstrators

Some Manitobans are concerned after Ontario Provincial Police moved in Monday on the rail blockade near Belleville, Ont., where Mohawks of Tyendinaga are demonstrating in solidarity with anti-pipeline activists in northern B.C.

Niigaan Sinclair, an associate professor in the University of Manitoba's native studies department, is worried the situation could get "much, much worse" now that demonstrators are being arrested for blocking passenger and freight train traffic for more than two weeks.

"The video is pretty damning to watch. It's a video of dozens of police officers armed to the teeth, lined up with paddy wagons, prepared to throw individuals who are standing on their own territory into them," Sinclair said Monday morning.

"It's a pretty horrific scene to watch."

The CBC's Olivia Stefanovich is reporting from the scene and described it as a tense time as dozens of police officers moved in on the camp around 7:15 a.m. CT.

quote:

"This is exactly what Canadian law looks like when it comes to Indigenous land," Sinclair said.

"When they stand up and have legal title to do so, the Canadian government simply moves in and removes them, arrests them and builds the project anyway."

Sheila North, the former grand chief of Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakinak, a northern Manitoba First Nations advocacy organization, hopes people will look at the arrests without hate.

She said the videos of the Ontario arrests create a real us-versus-them image in Canadians' minds, making it seem as though the Indigenous people are aggressors.

North wants Manitobans to see that Indigenous people are asserting their sovereignty through these blockades.

"I hope that people understand that these are long-standing issues. This is not a one-off thing. It's not happening just because Indigenous people don't have anything to do," she said.

Ry Moran, the director of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation in Winnipeg, said he expected something like this to happen.

The federal government needs to show it's dedicated to free, prior and informed consent, he said.

"It's the ability to say yes to something, the ability to say no to something, the ability to say stop, and the ability to say yes, but not that way," he said.

"I just think this is a very painful reminder of how much work we have to do in this country to fully protect and realize human rights."....

After tensions flared on Saturday, Wet'suwet'en protesters had a calm day near a CP Rail line in Saskatoon on Sunday.

“I’m here to support them. I believe they have a just cause," Dyck said. "As a senator, especially as an indigenous senator and one from Saskatchewan, I just felt I had to come down and do what I could to help them out."

The train engineers would not run through a site that was inches away from their right of way. But the Mohawk have been very clear that they are not blocking the track right of way. It is my opinion that the trains could have been crawling through the blockade at walking speed for the last week and the Mohawk would have stood on their territory. That's actually true. When you consider how much money it costs to run a newspaper or TV network, plus the fact that the energy companies are the only ones with enough money to be able to afford the ads, it's not a surprise that the media would mainly represent the energy company's point of view, nor is it a surpise that public opinion polling would reflect that as well. I'm sure that if you were doing public opinion polling at the time of the civil rights uprisings in the US, that most people would have told pollsters that they supported the police and that black people should just sit at the back of the bus and not make a big deal out of it. Regardless, energy companies have for far too long been able to extract resources and make profits (with the help of government subsidies, I might add) without regard for the workers doing the work or the land the resources are extracted from. These companies need to be held accountable.
