Jagmeet Singh faces criticism by First Nations Community for TikTok video over the Wet'suwet'en protests

NDP leader Jagmeet Singh is facing pushback for a video he posted criticizing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s lack of action over the Wet'suwet'en protests.

The video, posted to the social media site TikTok, shows Singh pouring a glass jug of water into another glass jug labeled “Justin Trudeau’s empty words”, which is next to another empty jug labeled “Justin Trudeau’s actions”.

However, people on Twitter (who identify as Aboriginal & Indigenous) felt this video in particular minimized the challenges faced by First Nations people.

With the caveat that I am unable to watch the video on this rundown office computer I'm using, from the description, this is just a filmed metaphor. If Singh had simply said "Justin has a lot of words, but his actions are an empty jug", I doubt there would be much controversy.

Let me see if I understand what's happening here. Trudeau is not negotiating in good faith with the First Nations, and under his watch the police are starting to move in. Horgan is adamant that the pipeline that sparked these uprisings in the first place is going ahead. The Conservatives are asking that the demonstrations be crushed, and McKay had to delete a tweet cheering on vigilantes breaking up roadblocks. And somehow, there are people who want to crucify Singh for a video he posted where he got his metaphors wrong, all while First Nations in this country continue to suffer from boil water advisories, disproportionate incarceration, and high suicide rates?

That, and the metaphor is totally nonspecific. It could be applied, in theory, to ANYTHING Justin has said and not done, and it just looks cheap and silly. Singh can clearly do better than that.

The voters the NDP are after want authenticity. The worst thing the NDP can do is appear opportunistic and slick.

Horgan doesn't matter nationally. Most non-partisans (swing voters), see the federal and provincial parties as separate entities. Supporting one at any particular election does not mean support for the other.

Burnaby’s Svend Robinson rips Jagmeet Singh over LNG, Wet’suwet’en

Burnaby South MP and federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh is getting ripped online by one of his former candidates over the issue of LNG and the Wet’suwet’en.

Former candidate and longtime Burnaby MP Svend Robinson took a verbal swing at Singh this morning on Twitter.

“Deeply disappointed in @theJagmeetSingh’s statement on the BC LNG project and Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs,” Robinson tweeted. “’So in terms of Indigenous sovereignty there is a very clear voice that people want the project…’ This does not respect UNDRIP or SCC decision in Delgamuukw.”

Robinson also tweeted this: “As NDP Leader and Critic on Crown-Indigenous Relations we look to you for respect for the leadership of Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs on their unceded land. Oppose fracked LNG gas pipeline and federal subsidies to this project which ignores #ClimateEmergency.”....

..singh continues to waffle on lng because the ndp has no alternative to corporations dominating extraction and further..the entire resource sector. if they had a plan it would have showed up in bc and alta. the mb ndp and sask ndp would not have supported the pipeline.
