The Canadian Press · Apr 05, 2020

Shirley Douglas, the impassioned Canadian activist and veteran actress who was mother to actor Kiefer Sutherland and daughter of medicare founder Tommy Douglas, has died.

She had just turned 86 on April 2.

Sutherland announced his mother's death on Twitter, saying she succumbed to complications surrounding pneumonia on Sunday morning. He said that her illness was not related to COVID-19.

"My mother was an extraordinary woman who led an extraordinary life," said Sutherland.

"Sadly she had been battling for her health for quite some time and we, as a family, knew this day was coming."

Today Canada's progressive movement lost a giant, with the passing of Shirley Douglas. She was a voice for the voiceless, a champion of Medicare & a Canadian who proudly gave back. Thank you, Merci, Miigwetch & Marsi for everything you gave to our country Shirley!

A giant of the left, a great loss.  My condolences to Kiefer, Rachel, and Thomas.

It has always been people like Shirley Douglas and her father who have made me proud to be a Canadian. This is such sad news.

I just found a documentary that was narrated by Shirley Douglas. It is about the LSD research that her father, Tommy Douglas, had commissioned to be conducted in Weyburn,  his home constituency. The documentary is called Psychadelic Pioneers. These doctors conducted research looking for a cure for alcoholism and mental illness. It is a fascinating topic on a chapter of Saskatchewan medical research for those who are  interested. It shows the strong medical innovation that the left was willing to explore as opposed to the morally uptight, right-wing conservstive set who used parliament to legally shut their research down

Thank you Shirley Douglas!!!
