The Party of Life Embraces Trump’s Death Cult

We’ve skipped over any nuanced discussion of economic considerations, straight to the part where Republicans rationalize letting a million or so people die to fix the economy.

Pondering

Trump will not get another term and will go down as the worst president they every had because at least major parts of if not the entire country is about to be decimated. Trump followers are believers. They accept his simplistic argument that more people die from car accidents and the common flu every year. They think only the old and weak will die. They have also believed their entire lives that the US is the greatest nation on Earth. They have a "can-do" attitude that can't be beat.

They are on a trajectory to be worse than Italy. Even the wealthy and upper middle-class will suffer. The economic hit will be worse because eventually it will be shutdown like Italy. Americans will be shocked beyond belief. This will be traumatizing.

I am quite afraid for the US. It is a country full of guns and faith in American exceptionalism.

Trump will bear the blame for this because he said everything would be fine and it was his job to make it so. As he has been worshipped he will be vilified.

Earlier than I expected.  The virus thing just froze the campaign in place, and gave him little shot.  But he will still be on the ballot in most of the states that have yet voted, and will accumulate additional delegates, which may influence the platform.

A platform which will not be enacted as Trump wins by a landslide and takes states that Clinton took in 2016 in the Fall.

The Supreme Court.

I get and respect why people some people might not be able to bring themselves to vote for him.

But - as someone who's well to the left of the Democrats - that's the reason I'd probably hold my nose and vote for him, if I were a U.S. citizen and eligible to vote in a competitive state.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg is 87, and has faced a string of health problems in recent years. Stephen Breyer is 81. Clarence Thomas is 71, and is rumoured to have health problems of his own. And Samuel Alito - while a mere 70 years young - might look at RBG as a cautionary tale, and opt to retire while a Republican is still in the White House, depending on how things are looking after the 2022 midterms.

If Trump gets another four years in office, there's a very realistic chance that there will be six Trump appointees on the Supreme Court by 2024.

Having said that, I am not at all optimistic about his chances of beating Trump. He will be a terrible candidate.

I'm not. Biden would still be a terrible candidate even if Bernie had never run for the nomination.

And he's a terrible candidate irrespective of anything that's happening with Trump. It's not like there can be only one terrible major-party candidate per election (see: 2016 election).

Which one of these 2 assertions do you consider lacking in evidence?

YouTube is full of mashups of Biden talking insanely about Corn Pop, mistaking New Hampshire for Vermont and telling voters who question him that they should just vote for Trump. Al Franken was forced to resign from the senate over far less serious sexual allegations. Thousands of Republican ads will display the evidence of both, and they should be starting right about now, since Bernie has dropped out and the Rs no longer have to worry about having a competent opponent for Trump.

Biden may still win, but it will be strictly an anti-Trump vote, which failed for Hillary, and may well fail for him as well.

Well, you do have a point. But that was just what I was saying, the Dem base failed to show up for Clinton, because they realize how corrupt and evil she is. Whereas the right eagerly voted for the at-least-as-evil Trump.

Different now with Trump the having been in office and an incumbent.  Some of you are as bad as those on the right in believing that every election from now on will just be a repeat of 2016.  Like generals fighting the last war.

We don't know that -- particularly since we do not know how this crisis is going to end or how it will be understood by the people. We also do not know if Trump will go if he loses or if he will give up on winning and just steal the election. I think that is more likely than an actual win now.

But don't deal in certainties we can all consult astrologers if we choose.

Agree. Democrats may not be the only ones to make that mistake. Now we have the so-called black swan event in progress and people thinking they can predict the result never mind the best means to fight the election.

I am certain there will be game changers between now and Nov and not just Coronavirus. We cannot predict what they will be or the final result. I am not even willing to predict this will end up still being Trump-Biden. We shall see. Maybe.

No, I don't believe that at all. What I do believe is that the Dems would have a tough time beating Trump without offering more than a return to normalcy no matter who the candidate was. Bernie Sanders, uniquely among the candidates, actually offered a program that could inspire supporters, which is why the Democratic elite would have chosen him if they really cared about beating Trump more than they cared about pleasing their donors.

If the candidate not offering anything were Kamala Harris or Cory Booker or even Pete Buttigieg, it might be feasible because Trump is just that bad. However, in my opinion, with such a dreadful candidate as Biden it becomes almost impossible. If Biden wins, a turnip could have won. Perhaps that will happen, but if so the voters will have decided that even a turnip is better than a Trump.

I'm not sure about her base not showing up sir. She did win the most votes and the 2016 voter turn out was about the same as the 2012 election turn out. Some of her voters may have stayed home because she had that 99% chance of beating Trump so thought why bother voting.

I think their right probably voted because they didn't like being called deplorables by a presidental candidate. Clinton seemed happy with flaunting Hollywood actors as supporters and didn't put that much effort into her campaigning.

Historically, it seems that this trend of demonizing the other party began with Newt Gingrich, and has been used much more by Republicans than Democrats in the last 25 years.

wikipedia wrote:
A number of scholars have credited Gingrich with playing a key role in undermining democratic norms in the United States, and hastening political polarization and partisan prejudice.[7][8][9][52][53][54][55][56][10][57][58] According to Harvard University political scientists Daniel Ziblatt and Steven Levitsky, Gingrich's speakership had a profound and lasting impact on American politics and health of American democracy. They argue that Gingrich instilled a "combative" approach in the Republican Party, where hateful language and hyper-partisanship became commonplace, and where democratic norms were abandoned. Gingrich frequently questioned the patriotism of Democrats, called them corrupt, compared them to fascists, and accused them of wanting to destroy the United States. Gingrich furthermore oversaw several major government shutdowns.[59][60][61][53]

The right-wing Democratic establishment has already started hammering on this line. It's the ultimate Charlie Brown football: The Supreme Court! You must not think of anything but the Supreme Court! Fuck policy, fuck sick people, fuck stopping the slaughter of brown people overseas, fuck the collapsed economy, fuck your future, fuck your kids, fuck your grandkids. Settle for the hope of a Supreme Court justice who, 30 years down the line, might not vote to overturn your fundamental rights. That's what American politics is now.

Joe Biden has already promised to veto Medicare for all. Do you think Supreme Court justices he picks will uphold any state's single-payer system? He opposes abortion. Think his justices will uphold Roe v. Wade? He's an architect of racist mass incarceration policies. But now we're supposed to believe he'll appoint a left-wing Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court, like everything else, was lost as soon as Bernie dropped out.
