Kropotkin, the need for cars in metropolitan areas is the outcome of criminal (and ecocidal) bad planning. Couples (and adult children) don't necessarily work in the same district or town in the Netherlands or Denmark either, and at least as many children are enrolled in sport or athletic activities. Amsterdam is the largest city in the Randstad (conurbation) and many people living there commute to jobs in Rotterdam, the Hague, Utrecht and other cities and towns, but there is an excellent commuter rail sytem, and now the new metro lines go much farther out from the city centre (there are also 14 tramlines). Not everyone works down the street from their home.

By the way, nowadays the most egregiously offensive posts here are not on Babble, but Rabble, where I believe the moderation has been farmed out to a completely incompetent company.

Wow picking up a year old conversation, cool. I agree with you totally. Metro Vancouver is getting better especially for biking. When I moved there in '94 I stopped biking to work because I was afraid of being run over. Now there are good bike lanes and dedicated paths so my son can commute on his bike from Coquitlam into Vancouver without having to deal with traffic.

I drew it to their attention before. Nothing happened.
