My point was that expecting the Republican base to abandon Trump because he overrules governors is like expecting Alberta's Conservative voters to walk away from the Tories because Scheer called for a taxpayer bailout for the oil sector. It's well and good to point out the hypocrisy, but it won't cost Trump any votes, and given Biden's segregationism has already caused him problems, even I don't think the Democrats will be stupid enough to have him run on a states'-rights platform.

Considering that Sanders did not follow advice from his own campaign to hit Biden on his vulnerabilities and present himself as the more electable candidate, (I mean seriously, why did he say on national TV that he thought Biden could beat Trump?) that is disappointing, however does not come as a surprise.

No matter. The core of Sanders' voting base had very specific public policy agenda items they wanted addressed. If they don't see those items being addressed, they will not vote for Biden, regardless of what Sanders or anyone else tells them they should do.

I especially like how many countries and parts of some countries just don't count most of the deaths as COVID because they do not happen in hospitals. Quebec's numbers have been really skewed because of all the seniors who have died in homes and are unaccounted for in the official data for the pandemic. I read that Quebec has almost three times as many seniors in care homes per capita as the other provinces. I was quite astounded at those numbers but it helped explain the ward style nursing homes that to me are the ultimate humiliation after a lifetime of working at whatever it was one did. I like most Canadians did not really understand how bad the care of our seniors had become. Out of sight out means of mind appears to be the reality.

This is one of those political changes that happens under cover over time and when it materializes people think it is a sudden thing. A non-stick pan is non-stick until it isn't but that did not happen in a single day.

The claim that Sanders could have won the nomination and presidency if only he had run a smarter campaign is delusional. The DNC, the corporate media (including the currently anti-Trump MSM) and security intelligence agencies along with massively funded black ops would have undermined him, much as happened to Corbyn in the UK.

It's amusing how some radicals believe in the fantasy of a functioning democracy, but only when doing so flatters their own ideological superiority.

Certainly. I think the campaign may be more fluid even than that. The pandemic may kill a lot of people. Many of these people could be in Republican states and at such speed that denial may be near impossible. They may suffer for having trusted and followed the GOP. A number of them may even be able to put that all together. when friends and relations die, it inspires some thought.

In addition to people coming out to vote who may never have in the past, due to anger, many Republicans seeing friends and family die, may just not be able to sweep that under the rug.

If the calls to dismiss the virus as the flu and re-open and other reactions backfire by creating hotspots in Republican strongholds, it is possible that it could be GOP support that stays home or even considers coming out to clean house.

I think Biden could win in a number of places nobody would expect a Democrat to win. People do not like him but he represents a broom.

The Republicans have forgotten that very thing that helped get them elected: when you are the governing party, you are the one being judged. fighting the opposition does not replace being able to defend what you do. Trump won in a complicated backlash where even Democrats voted for him in anger, frustration and understanding that they were not beng heard and not doing well. Not sure why people think that enough Republicans cannot do this to remove Trump. They do not have to like Biden.

Trump is screamog about how well america is doing - the slogan that he made it great and they should keep it great will ring off-key for those who have not had their lives become greater. The super rich do not have enough votes. Many who bought the Trump BS may reflect on the fact that things are not better.

But death makes people ask questions and if the answers are not the right ones, anger follows.

Trump has already deflected blame of his Administration's mishandling of the coronavirus crisis onto China. His cutting funds to the World Health Organization is red meet to his hard-core isolationist American exceptionalist base. Never under-estimate the capacity these people have for deflecing blame onto any available scapegoat. Also note that the media misrepresents what is happening in other parts of the world, so these people don't have information about how other countries did better than the US.

Wisconsin COVID-19 Cases Linked to In-Person Voting During April 7 Election

In Wisconsin, health officials in Milwaukee report at least seven people contracted the coronavirus at polling places during primary elections on April 7. State officials worry that number could climb as more data about Election Day-related infections becomes available. In-person voting proceeded after the conservative majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court overturned an order by Governor Tony Evers to delay in-person voting until early June.

$484 Billion U.S. Coronavirus Bill Won’t Fund Relief Checks, Food Stamps or State Aid

In the United States, the epicenter of the pandemic, the death toll from COVID-19 has topped 45,000. On Tuesday, the Senate approved $484 billion in new coronavirus aid on a voice vote, with many senators remaining at home due to the pandemic.

The bill adds another $310 billion to the Paycheck Protection Program providing loans to small businesses, another $75 billion for hospitals, $25 billion for testing and $60 billion for emergency disaster loans and grants. The House is expected to vote on the legislation today. The bill provides no new stimulus checks for U.S. households, no additional money for food stamps, no limits on fossil fuel bailouts, no funds for election security, no bailout for the U.S. Postal Service and no additional funds for hard-hit state and local governments.

Democratic Congressmember Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez told MSNBC Tuesday that lawmakers are failing to provide for millions of unemployed people who are unable to pay rent and increasingly at risk of going hungry.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: “We are abdicating our responsibility. We haven’t legislated for a month, and thousands of people are dying. Thousands of people are dying every day. And we aren’t going — and we’re talking about coming back. And every time we pass one of these bills, we’re hearing that the real solution is coming in the next bill — and in the next bill and the next bill. And at some point we have to raise our hands and say, 'When is the solution coming?' Because two months of rent are going to pass by before we’re actually even entertaining a real bill.”

The House and Senate have extended their recesses another two weeks — until May 4. Progressive lawmakers are demanding $2,000 monthly payments to all U.S. households and open enrollment in Medicare for uninsured and unemployed people, when lawmakers take up another round of funding, the so-called phase four coronavirus bill.

What I find so f'ing awful about the response of the left to Tara Reade's accusation is they are destroying the progress made by #MeToo to protect an old man with dementia who isn't going to win anyway.

Like, I would get it if Biden was an Obama-caliber candidate and was the best chance to get Trump out of the white house. But no, the left had a choice: protect the #MeToo movement or protect Joe fingerbangin' Biden. Tara Reade handed the left the perfect reason to get rid of their senile presumptive nominee, fully congruent with the supposed principles of the left and a great opportunity to cement #MeToo as being a standard that all men need to adhere to.

And the left's response? "Nah, we don't believe her, and we don't care if people take #MeToo less seriously after this, we'll keep our demented nominee, thanks anyway!"

The next time there's an accusation made against a conservative/republican/whatever, you all already know exactly what the defenders are going to say: "well you didn't believe or didn't mind when it was Joe Biden doing it to Tara Reade"...and again, I would at least understand an argument from political expedience except Joe Biden is going to lose anyway!

Michael Moriarity

Cody, I don't believe that any of Biden's supporters can be fairly described as "the left". So whatever they say or believe, it really has nothing at all to do with "the left". They will be much happier with a Biden loss than they would have been with a Sanders win because despite the constant lies of the mass media, they are not "the left", they are the left faction of the ruling class.

Biden claims he will have the most progressive government in generations if elected, a damn low bar even if true and there are questions about some of the people he has selected (see the next post). However, he is negotiating with Sanders on appointments to six task forces. Even if he accepts some ideas and people from Sanders side, the question remains whether all this is a campaign ruse to win over progressives.

The campaign of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) says it won’t appoint any “shrinking violets” to the joint task forces developing a compromise policy platform with presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.

Sanders and Biden are creating six task forces — on the economy, education, criminal justice, immigration, climate change and health care — as a core part of Biden’s outreach to the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, Sanders announced when he endorsed the former vice president last week.

The goal is to present a united platform before the convention, influence the kind of personnel who would fill a possible Biden administration and arm Biden with possible executive orders that he could enact quickly should he be elected president.

HuffPost obtained a preliminary list of some of the people Sanders is considering. Everything is still in early stages, and the two campaigns have been negotiating who will be in these six policy groups and how big the groups will be.

The list includes progressive policy experts who heavily influenced Sanders’ campaign platform over the last year, such as Darrick Hamilton, The Ohio State University economist who has become one of the leading academics on the racial wealth gap in the United States, and Stephanie Kelton, an economist at Stony Brook University who has championed Modern Monetary Theory — the idea that governments can never run out of money, and that deficit spending on major domestic programs would lead to economic growth.

Though not exhaustive, some other names on the Sanders campaign’s early list include Heather Boushey, an inequality expert with the Washington Center for Equitable Growth; Emmanuel Saez and Gabriel Zucman, two leading economists in the world of wealth inequality and progressive taxation; Jeffrey Sachs, who runs Columbia University’s Center for Sustainable Development; Josh Bivens, an economist with progressive think tank Economic Policy Institute; Daniel Kammen, who runs the Renewable and Appropriate Energy Lab at University of California, Berkeley; Tara Raghuveer, an affordable housing activist who runs the Kansas City Tenants group; and Bonnie Castillo, the executive director with the National Nurses Union.

Biden's selection of Larry Summers, who helped introduce many of the economic policies under Regan, Clinton and Obama that greatly widened income and wealth income, is a warning sign of what is to come if Biden wins the election.

Progressive groups are protesting news that Larry Summers is advising presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden’s presidential campaign on economic policy, calling on the former vice president to cut ties with the former Obama administration adviser who is something of a bogeyman for those in the left flank of the Democratic Party. ...

Two groups aligned with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Justice Democrats and the Sunrise Movement, started a petition on Friday in which they call on Biden to no longer use Summers as an adviser.

“Larry Summers’s legacy is advocating for policies that contributed to the skyrocketing inequality and climate crisis we’re living with today,” the groups said in a joint statement. “Joe Biden has a major trust gap that he must overcome with progressives and voters under 45 who voted overwhelmingly against him in the primary and who he’ll need to defeat Donald Trump.”

Summers has long been one of the most exalted economists in the world. He had roles in the Reagan, Clinton and Obama administrations and has served as the chief economist at the World Bank. He is known for his deep ties to Wall Street and Silicon Valley and for repeatedly backing bailouts for big financial institutions, and has been criticized for leaving middle-class workers with little assistance. It is precisely Summers’ kind of economic thinking that led to the rise of movements like Occupy Wall Street and the unexpected support for Sanders’ two presidential runs after the Great Recession.  ...

Progressive groups have long been lobbying to take down Summers. Naomi Klein, a progressive author and activist, argued to “banish” Summers from public life in a 2009 column in The Washington Post. In 2013, a coalition of activist groups and progressive lawmakers — including Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), who clashed with Summers during the 2008 financial crisis — successfully tanked Summers’ nomination as Federal Reserve chairman.

Biden’s campaign tried to downplay Summers’ role, saying he was one of many economists it has consulted and that he holds no formal position within the campaign. (The Biden team has turned to Summers before, reportedly referring journalists to him when they sought comment on Warren’s health care plan last year.) ...

Summers was a fierce critic of some of the most progressive policy ideas floated during the Democratic primary. He said Warren’s signature wealth tax proposal was “approaching confiscatory” and should be seen as a last resort, and he called her plan to transition to a single-payer “Medicare For All” system “dangerous” — two critiques Biden echoed on the campaign trail.

The news about Summers advising Biden comes as groups including Demand Progress and Revolving Door Project look to find ways to influence the campaign’s future personnel picks. More than two dozen good government and ethics groups published an open letter on Thursday in which they called on Biden to make the campaign’s personnel-picking process more transparent.

“People like Larry Summers, and others of his archetype ― Larry Fink, Jamie Dimon, Tom Nides ― have no place in Democratic politics at this juncture. We need to elevate people who aren’t responsible for crises,” David Segal, who runs Demand Progress, said in reference to potential, but unconfirmed, Biden administration picks named in an Axios report

“In the primary Biden benefited from his association with Obama, but it’s very hard to transfer that shine to Larry Summers,” Segal said, noting that more people are attuned to that shift in politics these days.
