Remdesivir as 'Miracle Drug': Back-to-Work Propaganda vs Science

https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2020/05/01/pers-m01.html

"The media's adulation of this 'breakthrough' takes place in the midst of an increasingly frenzied effort to legitimize a back-to-work campaign, and to create the impression that the virus is 'under control' and the crisis is all but over. But the claims that are being made about remdesivir and the purpose to which it is being put are highly suspect. One has more and more the impression that Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, is making statements determined by political pressure rather than scientific considerations and the needs of public health..."

NorthReport

Dr Fauci, who is undermined at almost every step of the way by the politicians, is trying to hold onto his job, so he can help Americans, everyone actually, survive this pandemic.

In relation to COVID-19 I prefer to put my confidence in the experts like Dr Bonnie and Dr Fauci than some political website.

B.C.'s provincial health officer says she's cautiously optimistic about a new study on the experimental antiviral drug remdesivir's effects on COVID-19.

American officials revealed this week that research conducted by the U.S. National Institutes of Health found remdesivir reduced recovery time by 31 per cent in COVID-19 patients — from 15 to 11 days on average.

During her daily briefing on Thursday, Dr. Bonnie Henry described those results as good news.

"I think it's a very positive thing, but with cautious optimism, because we don't yet know all the details," Henry said.

It is certainly true that Gilead Sciences, the makers of Remdesivir have a history of  successfully lobbying governments to push their products and have cleaned up from epidemics before.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas-donald-rumsfeld-makers...

But in the latest study recently published by the Lancet, results aren't particularly promsing. Still given the company's power and influence that doesn't mean they can't push it or sell it.

Vaccines will provide an ultimate defense to individuals who get it administered. In the meantime it would seem that Interferon provides the most effective symptomatic relief that can turn many certain mortality cases into recovered patients. That is not anything that would pique the interest of NY Times or CNN or any other of the billionaire media outlets. The most likely outcome is that public institutions in the Western countries will develop a vaccine that will then migrate to the private pharmaceutical industry and provide immense profits to the globes natural ruling elite. However the dark horse in the race is the Chinese pharmaceutical industry that may develop its own vaccine. If that happens it will be interesting to see if they make it widely available at close to the basic production costs of manufacture or how high they will gouge compared to the capitalist model in the US hegemony.

Exactly, the point being it would be best for all of us if we had an investigation to ascertain whether or not we can find out how the virus started. If the objective is to try and prevent future incidents shouldn't we be doing that?

Can interferons treat COVID-19 coronavirus disease?

It seems this supports the idea that it can turn many potential deaths into recoveries.Various options are under investigation as we type. Given that I am not a health care professional I can only guess that like in cancer treatment there are various treatments and what might work with one patient might not work with the next. Fortunately for us we don't only have to look to inadequate US internet sites for information.

Since its first application to combat dengue fever, Cuba’s interferon has shown its efficacy and safety in the therapy of viral diseases including hepatitis types B and C, shingles, HIV-AIDS, and dengue. Because it interferes with viral multiplication within cells, it has also been used in the treatment of different types of carcinomas. Only time will tell if Interferon Alfa 2B proves to be the wonder drug in tackling COVID-19.

Dr. Henry’s leadership extends far beyond health

VKA-henry-5875.jpg

There is no denying Dr. Bonnie Henry is now a household name. When we look back at this time for the rest of our lives, I believe that Henry’s role will forever be connected.

Dedicating her career to public health, Henry said she knew she would be speaking with the public on health issues, but never imagined her role as the Provincial Health Officer would be as public as it is now.

With the publicity, comes pressure. I asked Henry about her role and her leadership during this time.

“This is the Big One. We had to look at it and think: ‘What would happen if we overreacted and what would happen if we didn’t?’ ” said Henry. “A few weeks ago it was a challenge of not knowing if we were doing the right thing. We were concerned and also wanted to be reassuring.”

Henry has an impressive resumé with extensive work in public health, including pandemics, epidemics and infectious diseases globally, nationally and provincially.

Henry is quick to credit her team and acknowledge their efforts, too.

“I work with a lot of wise people, and have a strong team,” said Henry.

When I asked Henry for some leadership advice, she offered some thoughts I hadn’t heard yet.

“This is the time you need to be calm and kind,” Henry said. “Part of my role is to say that this is going to be hard, take a deep breath. Now is not the time to make assumptions about why people are doing what they are doing. As leaders, we need to make allowances for people right now.”

I admire Henry and she is teaching us a lot more than just staying safe.

She is a strong, intelligent woman that our entire province is turning to for guidance. I see her as an incredible role model for girls, especially girls in science.

“That is something really special to me. I grew up in a family of four girls and my father was in the army,” Henry said. “My mother and father brought us up believing we could do whatever we wanted to do. I support the importance of education and I have worked in countries where girls aren’t valued.”

Henry has also used her leadership role in another fantastic way, demonstrating respect, understanding and acknowledging Indigenous communities and Indigenous people. Henry understands the importance of this and the sensitivities around it. She keeps that in the forefront even during a crisis, and that is something to recognize.

Henry spoke highly of the recent passing of an elder from Alert Bay. She acknowledged the role elders plays within Indigenous communities and the role Indigenous elders play for our province.

She also supported Haida Gwaii’s decision to request visitors refrain from visiting their community and reminded British Columbians that First Nations are self-governing communities.

“We want to acknowledge the important cultural role First Nations communities have and we want to work toward fostering and supporting it,” Henry said.

Henry credits Dr. Danièle Behn Smith, an Aboriginal health physician adviser on her team, the First Nation Health Authority and other partners for their guidance and expertise.

Everyone I know is following Henry’s recommendations.

WHO says coronavirus 'natural in origin': Live updates

one might notice that "natural in origin" - only means that it appears to not be directly edited.

it does _not mean that that it didn't exit that lab, or any other lab for that matter.

the wuhan lab - with u.s. funding - was messing with this very family of bat/sars viri, in order to learn / be ready for, uh, the next pandemic, as i understand it.

At this point in time there is zero evidence that the virus escaped from a lab and a great deal of evidence that it occured in nature. Conjecture without any basis in fact isn't helpful.

Covid-19 is so overwhelming we have to look for silver linings, and presently Canadians are being offered the chance of seeing some of their great civil servants in action. And what is very rewarding is seeing the likes of Dr Tam and Dr Bonnie in key leadership roles roles during this crisis These public health officials are great role models especially for our younger women, so kudos to them and their teams for their superb efforts Canadians are indeed fortunate to have such a class act public health care system

Coronavirus: 'Missing link' species may never be found

An "intermediate host" animal passed the coronavirus from wild bats to humans, evidence suggests.

But while the World Health Organization says that the research points to the virus's "natural origin", some scientists say it might never be known how the first person was infected.

It remains unclear whether this host animal was sold in the now infamous Wuhan wildlife market in China.

But the wildlife trade is seen as a potential source of this "spillover".
