No Thanks. I'll pass.

Me too. This is an infringement of civil liberties which is unlikely to actually suppress the spread of covid-19. We should note, however, that China is doing this and more, and it's all mandatory on pain of becoming a social outcast.

Me three. Isn't BC already doing a great job of contact tracing? Why not follow that lead instead of giving Apple and Google billions and sacraficing civil liberties (even if only in the short term as claimed).

The argument the governments will use is that not only will the apps provide real-time information much more quickly, but that with the government finances the way they are, they will have no choice as this method will (supposedly) be cheaper than what BC has done.

I never cease to be amazed at how vehemently Canadians decry the Chinese system collecting personal data while ignoring the fact that we are forced to share just as much information. Try getting a mortgage without a good credit score in Canada. Try getting a credit card or any kind of personal loan if you have not built up a credit score by borrowing money from a capitalist. Our tax laws are supposed to require everyone to disclose all their income and sales transactions to our government. Our government has a security arm that continuely monitors peaceful activists in the indigenous and environmental communites.

I would love to live in a country with real privacy protections but I do not see one anywhere. If you are a peace loving citizen of China that believes in its political system you have less to fear from your government than a  Canadian teenager playing paintball and discussing religion with someone from the Middle East.

I am truly glad that I live in Canada, on Vancouver Island, and would not prefer to live in China but if I was given a choice between the US and China I would pick living in China every time. I'm not even black or Latino just an old leftist but vocalizing my world view could get me into deep trouble in many places in the US with "government" authorities.

Then I saw a second beast, coming out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon.  It exercised all the authority of the first beast on its behalf, and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed. And it performed great signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to the earth in full view of the people. Because of the signs it was given power to perform on behalf of the first beast, it deceived the inhabitants of the earth. It ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived. The second beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed. It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name.

Infectivity drops after 8 days:

Quote:

In the largest study of its kind so far, researchers from the National Microbiology Laboratory, Cadham Provincial Laboratory and the University of Manitoba looked at nasal or throat samples from 90 Manitobans who tested positive for COVID-19 from March 12 to the first week of April.

All of the samples came from patients who were confirmed to be infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, through polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing, the most common means of diagnosing the disease around the world.

This type of test extracts a small amount of genetic material and then copies it into quantities that can be more easily identified. The Winnipeg researchers used the same samples to try to grow more of the virus in cell cultures. They succeeded with 26 of the samples, or 29 per cent in total.

There was no viral growth whatsoever in samples taken from patients more than eight days after they became symptomatic, according to study findings published Friday in the peer-reviewed journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.

That is very true. Cross border travel is completely a federal matter. However I think Horgan's response when the feds were slow with telling returning travelers to quarantine might be a hint of what we will get. BC had public health officials meeting every returning traveler and requiring that they have an isolation plan in place before they could proceed. Dr. Henry has extensive Emergency Health powers that can be invoked once you step foot in the province.

Iowa Tyson Foods Plant Halting Operations After 500+ Workers Test Positive for Coronavirus

In Iowa, Tyson Foods says it will halt operations at its Storm Lake meat processing plant after 555 employees — or more than 20% of the workforce — tested positive for the coronavirus. Buena Vista County, where the plant is located, has the highest per capita infection rate of COVID-19 in Iowa. In California, over 200 workers at eight Los Angeles-area meat and food processing plants have tested positive for COVID-19. John Grant, president of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 770, which represents the meatpackers, called on Smithfield Foods to close its Farmer John plant near downtown L.A.

John Grant: “The outbreak is over 10% of the workforce, and it’s dangerous. And the problem with this is that it’s invisible, insidious and deadly. And so, what you do is, when a shark’s in the water, you pull everybody out of the water, and you make an assessment of what’s going on.”

For fuck sake, why are so many on the left falling for the same fear tactics and cheering on the same authoritarianism that they would rightly protest if it was in response to a terrorist attack?

Do these people honestly think that lockdowns and social distancing are going to be easy to enforce when people crack under the restrictions and start rioting in protest? We're starting to see protests against the lockdowns pop up all over the world. It's absolutely ridiculous that as things open up our lives are being micromanaged to a ridiculous level when we leave our residences, and yet the institutional failures that have really driven the spread of covid have not, for the most part, been addressed.

This virus has been a godsend to governments. It's the perfect thing to use to intimidate people into submission. Scare people every time that there is a rise in the number of cases, which usually turns out to be a blip that lasts a few days. Always raise the spectre of a "second wave" as cases drop and people start questioning the need for such restrictions. It's the exact same playbook that was applied after 9/11, and why so many othewise intelligent people are falling for this baffles me.

Michael Moriarity

Come on, A24, it's the oligarchs who want people back to work, regardless of the cost. (Won't somone think of their stock portfolios?) I have seen clips on YouTube of several billionaires urging resumption of business as normal. They're making noises again about herd immunity. Time for a few million peasants to die so that they can get their quarterly dividend cheques.

You claim that the villains who want restrictions to continue are governments, but in fact the posted article shows that the scientists and doctors are saying that whatever the economics of the situation are, going back to business as normal now will result in a renewed exponential growth of cases.

This is simply an application of epidemiological science to the current case, but you call that fear mongering, putting yourself on the same side as the billionaires and their wholly owned governments, particularly BOJO, Trump, and all the Republican elected officials.
