Coronavirus tracked: Charting Sweden’s disastrous no-lockdown strategy

Sweden’s decision to shun strict Covid-19 containment measures may have kept businesses open, but at what cost?

Sweden has taken the ignominious title of the country with the world’s highest death rate from Covid-19.

The title, which was was briefly held by the UK late last month, comes after Swedish officials decided to ignore the lockdown advice of countless health experts and kept the country largely open during the pandemic.

The number of deaths per capita in Sweden is now more than four-times that of its Nordic neighbours.

Tam warns of 'explosive' second COVID-19 wave if reopening mishandled

Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam has issued a clear warning that Canada could see “explosive growth” in new cases if reopening is not done with caution, as the latest federal COVID-19 modelling projects that there will be more than 100,000 confirmed cases in Canada, and up to 9,400 deaths by June 15.

“These models all tell us that if we relax too much, or too soon, the epidemic will most likely rebound with explosive growth as a distinct possibility,” Tam said on Thursday, imploring all public health offices and levels of government to keep a close eye on what’s happening over the coming weeks to avoid being in another wave of infections in the fall.

According to new short-term federal modelling released by Health Canada, as of June 15 —more than three months since COVID-19 was declared a pandemic— the country could see between 97,990 and 107,454 cases, and between 7,700 and 9,400 deaths.

Here is a project that the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) has pushed hard for. The idea is crews can fly into Canada and fly our on temporary visas without having to quarantine. Given the hundreds of thousands of maritime personnel stranded on ships because of COVID border closings this shows the power of solidarity across international unions.

Many countries, however, are yet to respond to the growing calls to address the restrictions and to create policies to facilitate crew changes. The International Labour Organization (ILO) highlighted that it believes that “150,000 to 200,000 seafarers trapped on board ships around the world because of measures to contain the COVID-19 virus.”

Canada’s action to ease the visa process is very similar to an appeal sent last week to the European Union ministers of home affairs and minsters of transportation in advance of EU meetings of the Transportation Council and the Home Affairs Council.

Representatives of the European Community Shipowners’ Association, the European Transportation Workers’ Federation, Cruise Lines International Association, and World Shipping Council called for an effort to ease the visa process in the Schengen region of Europe. Pointing out the current difficulties in obtaining visas, they estimated that over the next two months between 100,000 and 120,000 seafarers from third world counties will require Schengen visas so they can travel to relieve crew on vessels in EU ports.

Unfortunately Covid-19 doesn't stop at the border so all North Americans are hooped!

Public health workers fighting virus face growing threats

In the battle against COVID-19, public health workers spread across states, cities and small towns make up an invisible army on the front lines. But that army, which has suffered neglect for decades, is under assault when it’s needed most.

Officials who usually work behind the scenes managing tasks like immunizations and water quality inspections have found themselves center stage. Elected officials and members of the public who are frustrated with the lockdowns and safety restrictions have at times turned public health workers into politicized punching bags, battering them with countless angry calls and even physical threats.

On Thursday, Ohio’s state health director, who had armed protesters come to her house, resigned. The health officer for Orange County, California, quit Monday after weeks of criticism and personal threats from residents and other public officials over an order requiring face coverings in public.

As the pressure and scrutiny rise, many more health officials have chosen to leave or have been pushed out of their jobs. A review by Kaiser Health News and The Associated Press finds at least 27 state and local health leaders have resigned, retired or been fired since April across 13 states.

Rising House Prices And Tanking Rental Market Show Pandemic's Economic Divide

But the weakness in the rental market risks infecting the housing market.

But the divide between the rental and housing markets could soon break down. That’s because a significant chunk of Canada’s homes, particularly condos, is in the hands of investors who rely on the rental market to pay their mortgages.

That could be a problem, especially for those investors who bought their properties in recent years at high prices. A recent report from TorontoRentals.com found that units in many of Toronto’s new condo buildings are losing money at current rental rates. Some experts have warned that if this continues long enough, it could lead to forced selling in the housing market, driving up the supply and pushing down prices.
