Defacing an SS Memorial a hate crime?

Someone painted “Nazi war monument” on a stone cenotaph commemorating those who served with the 14th SS Division. The monument is located in Oakville in the St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Cemetery.

The division, made up of Ukrainians who pledged allegiance to Hitler, was part of the Nazi’s Waffen SS organization. Some members of the division have been accused of killing Polish women and children as well as Jews during the Second World War.

Halton Regional Police believe the graffiti was spray painted on the cenotaph sometime around June 21. Police said they were investigating the incident as a “hate-motivated” crime but they declined to release images of the graffiti so as to stop “further spreading” of the message.

Good on whoever did that.  There is no excuse for any country that was part of the "Allies" in World War II to have a memorial to Nazis.

Our former Foreign Minister and current Deputy PM would not agree. Her Grandpa was a Ukrainian "nationalist" propagandist who partied with Hitler. When she was Foreign Minister she helped install fascist governments in Brazil and Bolivia and kept trying in Venezuela. Its in the family genes just like the Bushes I guess.

I don't defend my country's leaders for doing things like that, so you've got no call to imply that I'm a hypocrite.

No such intention on my part Ken.

Thank you for clarifying that.

First, Canada has not one but several memorials to Nazi collaborators. Second, even though Canada, like the United States, is in the midst of a reckoning about statues to monsters, the chances of Ottawa’s doing anything, even speaking out, on this are next to none. Finally, Canadian-Jewish organizations—people you might think have an interest in denouncing monuments celebrating butchers of Jews—have been distinctly silent about this. That’s both stunning and unsurprising.

. . . .

After Pugliese’s article gained traction, the Halton Regional police department apologized, stating that the incident has been reclassified as simple vandalism. The police chief added an admirable tweet, saying, “The most unfortunate part of all this is that any such monument would exist in the first place.”

Waffen-SS Galician Division Still Revered by Canada's Ukrainian Right

https://rabble.ca/babble/news-rest-us/waffen-ss-galician-division-still-...

"This Captive Canada article looks at a Nazi Waffen SS division of Ukrainians who volunteered to form a 13,000-strong unit under Reichsfuhrer Himmler in 1943. Despite opposition from Jews and Ukrainian leftists, thousands of these vets were welcomed to Canada after WWII - thanks to our Liberal govt vets from both the Nazi-linked OUN/UPA and the Waffen SS formed groups here that joined the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC), which our govt created in 1940 to fight socialists and communists in the homeland. These Nazi vets are still listed as members of the UCC..."

Then, as now, as long as they hate 'Moscali' (Russians) Canada's good with it.
