Consortium News Sends Libel Notices To Canadian Signals Intelligence Agency and Major TV Network

"Consortium News has sent libel notices to a Canadian spy agency and major TV networks after their reports said CN is part of a Russian-directed propaganda campaign targeting Canadian leaders. Will the New Finance Minister Redirect $19 Billion for Fighter Jets to a Gender-Aware Budget?

https://rabble.ca/blogs/bloggers/brent-patterson/2020/08/will-new-financ...

"...Freeland was a member of the federal cabinet when the decisions were made to increase spending on the military from $18.9 billion in 2016-2017 to $32.7 billion in 2026-27, with total spending over a 20-year period of $553 billion on a cash basis. That's the so-called strong, secure, engaged (SSE) policy. When his [Trudeau's] government announced several years ago its intention to spend $19 b on new fighter jets, the deficit was just 5.5% of what it is now. As such, it could also be argued that priority is no longer relevant (if it ever was) to the reality we are living now."

Given her own full-throated support for Ukrainian fascism, perhaps the ex NDP MP's support for these two neoliberal enforcers should be taken with more than a few grains of salt.

Pondering

Trudeau does not care if Freeland ends up PM. He is not inherently an ambitious man. He was convinced by others to make a run for the job. Otherwise he would happily have remained on the speaking circuit. At whichever election he loses he can gracefully retire from the leadership and makes lots and lots and lots of money while working a few days a month. So if Freeland wants the job, I don't think he would have a problem with it.

It might not be so bad either. It isn't like the Liberals would choose a leader acceptable to the NDP. At least with Freeland she understands policy so well that the NDP could negotiate with her directly.

laine lowe laine lowe's picture

I don't know why but she gives me the same vibe as Michael Ignatieff and that frightens me. She is more aligned with the US style of governance and policy-policy making than most Canadian politicians. Put it this way, most US Democrats are far more right wing than the red Tories (if any of them still exist).

Chrystia Freeland Must Account For Her Nazi Collaborator Grandfather

https://readpassage.com/chrystia-freeland-must-account-for-her-nazi-coll...

"...Being connected to someone who has committed repugnant acts or held awful views is one thing. Refusing to condemn or even acknowledge what they did, continuing to push a whitewashed version of their past, and admitting they've had a major influence on your political views and career is something completely different. That is exactly what Freeland has done. Freeland's only public response thus far to being asked about her grandfather's history, was to erroneously dismiss it as Russian propaganda..."

Since when are politicians held accountable by the Canucklhead public? For anything? Let alone their numerous collaborations with authoritarian or fascist regimes. How about those multi-billion dollar arms contracts with Saudi? And if the truth be known she herself acts on behalf of a modern day version of a  'Nazi Collaborator' government now.

https://images.app.goo.gl/xjaCJoscND7uYmT17

Time for Freeland to stop hiding and  admit the truth about her family's Nazi past.

Pondering

She isn't accountable for what her grandfather did or didn't do. Most of us don't get to choose our families. The only thing that matters is her actions.

It is true that swing voters generally just look at the high notes because the decision just isn't that complicated. Freeland gives the Liberals/Trudeau a veneer of progressiveness because of the plutocrats book she wrote. It is no different than marijuana legalization giving him a veneer of progressiveness.

The left will not win the way that the right wins, by attacking people. It works for conservatives because for them it is a culture war. The left has got to stop playing the game of the right. Jumping on the bandwagon because it hurts Trudeau is misguided. Trudeau isn't the problem. The party is the problem not the individuals that front it but attacking the party won't work either because it is too undefined. The right is right in one thing. You have to attack individuals. The issue is what you attack them for.

For example, there is huge focus on Trudeau being crooked and elitist because he is percieved to have used his position to benefit friends. The left jumps on the bandwagon. From my perspective telling me that politicians benefit their friends is a given. People trust CEOs more than they trust politicians.  It isn't at all shocking other than the hubris that leads them to be so obvious about it.  Tell me what else is new.

Getting rid of Trudeau, or O'Toole, will solve nothing because neither of them are the issue. If Trudeau had stayed out of it and the contract was given to some other organization would that have made it okay?

NDPP

You need to re-read the article. You obviously missed the point of it entirely.

Pondering

Your link didn't work but I googled and read the article. It changes nothing. Swing voters don't care much one way or the other what happens outside of Canada. They don't care if Freeland is evil because it is the economy and policies that directly impact it as well as government services that voters will base their votes on.

The right consistently paints the left as being economically naive social justice warriors that just want to give away all the money we pay in taxes. And we let them. On the face of it, which is as far as most people will go, she supports Ukranian independence. Not a bad thing. Has she done anything in Canada against Jews? She isn't the PM so does not choose whether or not Canadian soldiers go over. We already know that Canadians governments Liberal and Conservative deal all the time with repressive regimes, send arms to Saudi Arabia yet condemns Venezuala. It is beyond obvious that these decisions are based on monetary interests not moral ones. That hasn't gotten the NDP elected and won't.

The time to worry about what do do about foreign affairs and injustice in general is after being elected. The Conservatives win based on their reputation for being fiscally responsible and wise (I know they aren't). The Liberals win based on providing government services while still balancing the needs of the economy. They talk about pharmacare and national daycare but regretfully accept that the country just can't afford those things yet. The NDP (federally) are really really nice but can't manage the economy. The conscience of parliament.

The NDP cannot play the game of the Conservatives and Liberals and win. The Conservatives and Liberals use guidance from marketing companies to win with colorful ads balloons and coffetti. The NDP needs to use black and white and focus strickly on economic issues and the interests of the entire 99% not just the bottom part. That means everyone making 300K and under.

I can't stand Dr. Phil but he has a saying. "Do you want to be right or do you want to be happy?"

I ask, "Do you want to be right or do you want to win an election?".  You can't have both.

NDPP

The link is just fine and your explanation only further demonstrates why Canada has such a servile, idiotic, godawful foreign policy, but once again evades the central point of the article. Freeland must stop her lying and blaming Russia for her family's Nazi past and come clean.

Why? How would it benefit her? How does it harm her if she doesn't? It seems to me it hasn't hurt her at all so far. Maybe it would be the "right" thing to do but I don't see how it matters one way or another. What she personally does matters but even if it informs her current actions the actions have to be condemned on their own merits not condemned because she defends her grandfather.

NDPP

I do condemn her own actions on their own merits. But in a country where the political leadership apologizes almost every other week, for actions recent or historic for matters weighty or flimsy, Ms Freeland, on such an awful secret-keeping, must surely step up and do the same.  Had she done the right thing and made an honest statement at the time the revelations her grandfather was a dedicated, high-ranking, virulent Nazi propagandist, Jew-hater and Ukrainian fascist, first emerged, this ugly black stink would not still be floating so obviously for any who have a nose to smell or eyes to see  in the national air.

But she didn't. She lied dissembled and frantically sought to rubbish the truth by discounting it as simply Russian smear. It wasn't. And the fact she still hasn't 'clarified' this matter that many now know she lied about it, means  she must explain. The importance and necessity of this should be obvious.  As you suggest also and I agree 'maybe it would be the right thing to do.'  Because what we know now she knew then and yet she dissembled and lied to us nationally with cameras rolling. And from that we must draw the obvious conclusions. About her and us. Do you think if her grandfather had come here say as an ex-Soviet official involved in promoting Jewish genocide, her awful evasions and mendacities would have been so easily countenanced? Especially, curiously, by certain quarters where we would least expect it?

Pondering

I guess for me it is "so what" because people don't care. It won't impact their vote. Probably not even if they are Jewish. They aren't going to elect a government that will drive Canada into poverty because of Freeland's defence of her grandfather or the Liberals lining their pockets.

NDPP

Probably a more or less typical view.

Economic Update Signals Continued Commitment to Half-a Trillion Dollars for the Military

https://buff.ly/36uCNzi

"On November 30, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland presented an economic update on Canada's finances in the House of Commons. What is known at this point is that the Canadian government appears to be fully committed to spend half a trillion dollars on the military over the next 20 years. That spending includes $19 billion to purchase new fighter jets in 2022 and up to $58 billion more to operate and maintain those warplanes.

On the same day as the economic update was tabled in the House of Commons, Defense News published an interview with Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan. In that interview, Sajjan notes that the government is on track for the purchase of fighter jets in 2022 and that there are no plans to cut military spending.
